Re: Are there free and legal speech synthesizer add-ons for NVDA?

There aren't many free synthesizers that are compatible with the current version of NVDA.  There are a few more listed that are compatible with NVDA version 19.x as the last compatible version of NVDA.

Regarding the NVDA speech player, You may want to try it but though it may try to sound like Eloquence or DecTalk, it doesn't.  Also, I believe the speech Player is no longer being developed.  If I'm wrong, others may want to comment.

A Web search turned up the following page for what looks like a modern RH Voice addon which is still being developed by the community.
https://rhvoice.org/
I haven't installed it but the main addon did launch the installer with my beta version of 2022.1 without an error.

I won't say much about it, as I honestly don't know if it was legal or not, so before a mod bites off my head for discussing illegal software on here, realize that I'm not sure if it was or not. If I'm told it was illegal, I'll abruptly and immediately cease this discussion further, I absolutely cross my heart no questions asked.

That said, what about that old addon for DecTalk Access 32. I wonder if anyone's managed to get it working.

To expand tabs, you press enter on them. Then if you are still in browse mode, the tab you selected will say Expanded. Actually for mine I hear “selected” not “expanded.” You are thinking of those fly out menus which are sometimes a bit  of a PITA.

Re: experience sharing: Using NVDA's Gestures to Switch the Touchpad

Just one tiny, and not NVDA-related, addition to this which is on-topic for this particular thread.   A very great many laptop mousepads have the ability to be toggled on/off via a "corner tap" on the mousepad itself.  The laptop I'm on has a Synaptics touchpad.  In its touchpad properties, Tapping settings, that dialog contains a checkbox for Touchpad Disable Zone Settings where the checkbox itself reads:  Double Tap to enable or disable touchpad.  If you have this checked, a subsequent setting, Top Left Action (as that's where you have to double tap) can be set with a radio button to either Switch TouchPad off for one session or Switch TouchPad Off.

I hadn't realized mine also has accessibility options associated with it too that allows mouse movement to be slowed or constrained.

Not that using NVDA key mapping is in any way inappropriate, but there are often built-in methods for the device, too.

Not necessarily. IN some sites in focus mode I can actually see the text change when I tab to it. I can even up and down arrow to certain parts of tables. It depens on the sight layout. I can’t think of one at the moment as they are rare, but they do exist.

But when you are in focus mode, you see no text and only see controls you can tab and shift tab to.  When you select a different tab, a section of the web page changes containing text and controls.

When i hit reply in the archives, i tab to the subject box and then tab and it says, quote whole post, i tab again, and it says edit and it shows my signature, i turn on focus mode and type and then hit reply to group. i can go to the top of the page and press e, and hear subject, press e again and i hear edit, and my signature. If you are in the subject line and you go into forms mode there, then tab, you will again hear that you are in an application with more information.  Since you are already in forms mode, you can write there.

As I said, you hear application increasingly on web sites where you do something.

I also come across another word now instead of edit, but I don't recall what it is.  Do or try what seems correct from context.  Using logic and inference is important in using the Internet where there are different ways of doing the same thing and where change may occur at any time.

And speaking of application, at times, when I want to listen to something on a web [page, I may hear application and I may have to go into forms mode to see the buttons.  I go into forms mode and tab around.  Again, this is logic and inference.

I just looked at the interface.  It is important to know this because you see it increasingly.  If you stay in browse mode and you move to the next item after the subject field, you will hear application.  That means you are actually in a web application and you should switch to forms mode.  In this case, you are in the message body edit field and the application is for writing.

After pressing the Reply button, press E to get to the subject field and press Enter to activate forms mode. Then, press Tab, and you should hear "editable blank." That means you're in the message field. Sometimes, pressing Tab once from the subject field puts you in some sort of toolbar, but press Tab again, and you should land in the message field. Pay attention to the sounds that indicate whether you're in browse or forms mode. You may need to reactivate forms mode again once you're in the message field. I hope this helps.
