Re: Speech delay in Excel

David Hoff Jr

I am using:
1. Eloquence reed
2. Windows 7
3. Excel 2003
4. latest version of NVDA

I can remove the colon and the delay is still there.
If I remove the "#" sign the delay goes away.

The delay is slight, but long enough that I often cursor over it
accidentaly. If it were not for NVDA saying "cell" on the empty cells I
would not have caught this. I have punctuation set to the default
setting.

Not really.

Microsoft 365 can be thought of as akin to any other subscription software
in that there is an installed component and, so long as you're subscribed, a
perpetual update agreement.

Microsoft 365, and all the programs you have based on your subscription, are
resident on your machine and can be used whether you happen to have an
internet connection or not.  And that's dirt simple for anyone who has it to
test out.  Simply disconnect from the internet and try firing up any one of
the Office programs you have as part of an active Microsoft 365
subscription.

Just as you can log in to a Microsoft Account linked Windows 10 or 11
Account without any internet connection, you can use the Office programs
that come with M365 in that state, too.

Re: Formatting issues in Word, add-on?

Jackie

Janet, I'm just thinking out loud now, & that is always a dangerous
thing for me, because, as my dad always used to tell me, thinking was
beyond my pay grade. However, since I'm not being paid right now...

MS 365 is an online platform. I'm wondering if there's any possibility
that the delay introduced by that is what is causing some or all of
your problem.

I don't even know if this would interest you, but a possible solution
at this time might be MS Office 2021 available through Stack Social
for about $50 USD. Normally this runs about $350 USD, so it's a very
good deal. & no, I don't have any affiliation w/them, financial or
otherwise. I wouldn't wait long on this 1 though, if it's at all of
interest. You can get it at:
https://www.stacksocial.com/sales/microsoft-office-professional-plus-2021-for-windows

If the online venue is indeed introducing transfer delays & causing
your problems, then this might be a solution at a very reasonable
price.

If you do get it, you'll want to go into tools > options & disable a
lot of crap & fix up other options. That includes nuking the start
screen, as it's a pain in the anatomy.

If this is totally off the wall, then please accept my apologies in
advance. But you should probably realize that this is coming from
someone who recently nuked a server because of online delays, ie, I
wasn't where I thought I was. This happens w/everyone, but screen
readers tend to make it more pronounced.

Re: Configuration profiles

Hi Luke
I tried the steps again as you suggested and it worked - thank you very much

‫בתאריך שבת, 16 באפר׳ 2022 ב-17:34 מאת ‪Luke Davis‬‏ <‪luke@...‬‏>:‬

What version of NVDA are you using?

Running the latest alpha, I did the following steps:

1. Checked that highlighting was off (NVDA+n, p, s, v, tab).

2. Created a new manually triggered profile called testprof. In the trigger for
editing dialog which appears as the last step in creation, I chose Yes.

3. I changed voice variant, to be sure that I could tell when this profile was
triggered by what the voice sounded like. That is an E-Speak thing; you could
use any other speech characteristic such as rate or volume, if you don't use
E-Speak.

4. I turned highlighting on (NVDA+n, p, s, v, tab, space, enter). While doing
so,
NVDA's configuration dialogs were telling me that I was editing the testprof
profile.

5. I switched back to the normal profile (NVDA+n, c, up arrow to top, enter). I
could tell that worked because the voice changed back; and I saved configuration
(NVDA+Ctrl+c).

6. I checked highlighting again and found that it had turned back off.

7. I switched back to testprof (NVDA+n, c, down arrow to testprof, enter), and
confirmed I was in it by hearing the voice change.

8. I checked highlighting again and found that it was turned on again.

9. I restarted NVDA, and confirmed that in the normal profile the highlighting
was off.

10. I switched to testprof and confirmed that highlighting was on.

11. I switched back to normal profile and confirmed that highlighting was off.

All of this seems to indicate that highlighting settings save in profiles as
expected with latest NVDA.

Oh, lastly I went back in, and set to use only system focus highlighting, as you
are trying to do, and confirmed that everything still worked as above. It does.

Hi,

Ah, this is an interesting data point. Once I get the debug log, I should know what might be happening (and should also answer Luke's question since the log will include ap version string which I can look up and figure out exactly which Microsoft 365 version you've got).

Cheers,

I know this was not on the table, but can you send me a debug log to figure out what NVDA is saying? To do so, restart NVDA with debug logging, open Word, perform formatting commands, then open NVDA log viewer (NVDA+F1), copy everything, and paste it as a private email to me. The reason is that I want to see if we're seeing a double announcement problem where NVDA announces formatting command results twice - once after pressing the formatting command, followed immediately by a repeat of or a different announcement, and if this is really the case, a simple solution exists: Windows App Essentials add-on (I know, I'm sort of a salesman for this add-on, but I seriously recommend ALL Windows 10 and 11 users to install that add-on); I'll explain what's happening if the debug log confirms my hunch.

Re: Formatting issues in Word, add-on?

Hi,

Yes, I have MS 365 and the template is in Word 1997-2003. One interesting thing I’ve noticed is that after I’ve selected and italicized  line of text and turned italics off with ctrlI, underlining seems to be turned on so I have to check for that and turn that off as well. Fortunately the NVDA-F key seems to be working OK as I’ve been able to get some sighted assistance to double check before uploading my documents.

Thanks,

Janet

No, she said she believes the template was created using Word somewhere in that era.  There's nothing in her initial post explicitly stating what version of Word/Office she's actually using to work with it.  That's what Luke is asking about.  I generally don't need the "down in the nuts and bolts" version number such as he's asked for (though it certainly doesn't hurt to give it) but just want the major release number for Office or Microsoft 365.

And the fact that she liked my suggestion regarding doing a Save As to docx format means she's got to be using Word 2007 or later.  From other topics, I seem to recall she's got either one of the modern standalone versions (2016-2021) or Microsoft 365, but I cannot clearly recall which one.

Janet will have to answer that one (again, I'm sure, even if its not again in this particular topic).

Re: I can't turn off NVDA

I should have mentioned that you can bring up the NVDA Settings Dialog using NVDA + N, P, S  (which is how your students would do it) or by bringing up the context menu by right clicking on the NVDA system tray icon, choosing Preferences, then Settings.

Not that you would likely search our group archives using the screen reader, but these two tutorials may prove useful for your students:

Searching a Groups.io Topics Page/Archive

Browsing a Groups.io Topics Page/Archive

You will most likely do it "the sighted way" (as do I, in most cases, since I am sighted) just by going to the archive page and using the search box.  There are some notes in those tutorials that apply to "massaging the results presentation" that apply no matter how you initially conduct the search.  It's just that you'll point and click to get to them, in all probability.

Re: I can't turn off NVDA

Every NVDA user needs to know how to do two basic things when almost any question arises.  The one you want really depends on the exact nature of the question:

1.        Bring up the NVDA Commands Quick Reference:  NVDA + N, H, Q  [NVDA Menu, Help, Commands Quick Reference]

2.      Bring up the NVDA User Guide:  NVDA + N, H, U   [NVDA Menu, Help, User Guide]

In the User Guide, the NVDA Settings Section, the two settings (in the General settings) for Start NVDA after I sign-in and Use NVDA during sign-in are discussed.  If both of these are unchecked, NVDA does not start automatically.

Shutting down NVDA can be accomplished via NVDA + Q or by finding the NVDA icon in the system tray (it may be in the overflow area), right clicking on it, and choosing Exit from the context menu.

In all probability the NVDA key is going to be Insert.  That's the default.  If you are using laptop keyboard layout it's CAPS LOCK.

I can't turn off NVDA

David Van Reyk <David.VanReyk@...>

Hello!
I had our ITD department set up NVDA on my work laptop. I think I did this without managing the settings. So at the moment, I can't turn it off when the computer starts up. Once I have logged in I can work without getting the audio descriptors (I am not visually impaired, I am a teacher using it to get user experience).  For the life of me, I can't work out where I modify the settings for NVDA such as setting up what keystroke protocol to use to turn NVDA off and on. Apparently, there was a thread
https://nvda.groups.io/g/nvda/topic/trouble_closing_n but I am struggling to find the thread to read what it says.
