Re: Odd issue with NVDA and windows 11

However, didn't you say that you heard progress bars being announced even when programs aren't opened?  I'm not saying there is a problem, but if you shouldn't have any progress bars being displayed in the background or foreground, there may be a problem of something running that shouldn't be.

I don't think this is an NVDA problem.  I think something is going on in Windows or a Windows program that is causing a progress bar to be displayed and NVDA is reading it.  If you alt tab around, do you see any window that gives any idea of what it might be?  Also, did this behavior start after any event, such as after updates were installed or after you installed a program?

Re: Odd issue with NVDA and windows 11

It may solve the symptom, but there may be a problem that needs to be addressed.  As I recall the original message, progress bars are read even when all programs that have windows are closed.  And since reading background progress bars is off by default, at this point, I wouldn't be particularly committed to the idea that this setting is on.

Either way, there may be a problem that needs to be looked into.

Hi Kenny,

Go to NVDA menu, the Code Factory, which is Insert/Caps Lock N, then O, then down to Eloquence.

Make sure that Process Punctuation is not checked. If it is, then it will override any NVDA setting you have.

I just heard back from them Some of it does sound canned, but here's hoping they can get this issue resolved. Here is the email verbatim.

Hi Sarah,
Thank you for contacting us at Google Disability Support. My name is Wendy and I am happy to be working with you today.
I understand that When completing a password for auto complete items, the name of the item is not spoken when you use Screen readers in Chrome. Instead it says "password for".
I have replicated your issue and have sent a bug report to our specialists.
This team will review your case to make sure we don’t need anything more from you before we officially submit it to the Google Development Team. We're always grateful to receive ideas and requests and your suggestions help us improve our products, so we want to make sure we fully understand your issue before we close your case with the Disability Support team.
Once our team reviews and confirms your issue , we’ll relay it to the Google Development Team. While we won’t be able to provide a definitive time on a response from them, we do want to let you know that the Google Development Team actively reviews feedback like yours to understand what our users would like to see and implements new features that way.
Please note that due to Covid-19 we are experiencing a delay in Bug reports being submitted, but rest assured I’ll follow up with you once your bug report has been sent to the Google Development Team.
Have a great day, and if there is any way that I may further offer you assistance with assistive technology or accessibility feature questions, please feel free to contact me at Google Disability Support.
Thanks!

Just getting caught up on the thread. Sounds like we’ve narrowed the issue down to a Chrome problem. I will make sure to fill out a report with Google as well. Thanks everybody. in the meantime, good old NVDA OCR will allow you to know which saved login you are on. Not ideal but better than nothing until we get a fix.

Latest versions of windows 10, Chrome and NVDA here. When I am logging into a website and the username or password field has focus, I press alt down arrow to access whatever passwords I have saved for that site. Normally each item in the list would say something like, “password for username1,” “password for email@...,” etc. (Obviously using dummy names for this purpose but you get the idea.) Now NVDA just says “password for.” I’ve observed this behavior in both the current and prior versions of NVDA. If I activate NVDA character recognition I do here the account names so I know they’re physically appearing on the screen.

Notepad++ can do it of course, but I have never tried spell checking in that (it probably has a plugin).

and spell checking

Hi Louis,

Many thanks. I am going to go with ritage. This is the most convenient
option for me for now because I need this plugin for a single article for
now. The 14 trial should be sufficient though the plugin is accessible so I
may buy it later.

Sarah,

The plugin gives you a way to add markdown styles to word and lets you
export and I believe import markdown documents into Microsoft word.

I might also take a look at that, if I can remember what this plugin does. I
just had a long day so am suffering from memory lapses from the past few
hours. I'll actually send now as I totally forgot what else I was going to
say. Sorry folks. The plug seems interesting though and if I can add it to
my arsenal then Coolio.

Zoomax NLS e-reader and getting it to work with NVDA

I think the subject says it well. Can this particular Braille display be made to work with our screen reader of choice? If so, how can we do this? It isn't possible for me to use it connected to my computer, using NVDA. I have it connected via USB now.

No obvious choice shows up for it in the Braille options. It is not recognized automatically. Any ideas on this would be appreciated.

Re: Eloquence and Punctuation Announcement

I have an expired Eloquence but I can still look at the control panel.  There is a check box that says process punctuation.  It is not checked by default and I doubt it has been.  But if it has, uncheck it and see if that makes any difference.

Unless you do a full clean of NVDA's config directory in the process, this
won't help.
Have you tried making a portable NVDA without including existing settings?
If that has the same problem after you set it to use Eloquence, there's a
good chance that re-installing NVDA won't help.

One thing I'm wondering, is if the Eloquence control panel has some sort of
feature that can override how NVDA wants it to pronounce things.

I don't have it to test with, but you could go through its settings and see
what you come up with.

I also don't know if every version of Eloquence has its own separate
controls.

No I just ignore all when it catches it. But otherwise it’s doable. Remember I take  the long way around things so your mileage might very.

Hi Sarah,

Are you saying that jart detects markdown and handles spell checking without getting confused?
