Have you used a Mac?  The grass is always greener, etc.  It is no small thing to discard all your knowledge and experience of one operating system to move to another.  And Windows gives you more screen[-readers to work with so if one doesn't do something, another may.

Thanks, I still don't understand why windows 11 would announce something that's not there, even had a sighted person check and nothing was displayed on screen, even did a clean install of NVDA and would still get odd behavior until I disabled saidoption.

This option controls how NVDA reports progress bar updates to you.

It has the following options:

• Off: Progress bars will not be reported as they change.

• Speak: This option tells NVDA to speak the progress bar in percentages. Each time the progress bar changes, NVDA will speak the new value.

• Beep: This tells NVDA to beep each time the progress bar changes. The higher the beep, the closer the progress bar is to completion.

• Beep and speak: This option tells NVDA to both beep and speak when a progress bar updates.

Report background progress bars

This is an option that, when checked, tells NVDA to keep reporting a progress bar, even if it is not physically in the foreground. If you minimize or switch away from a window that contains a progress bar, NVDA will keep track of it, allowing you to do other things while NVDA tracks the progress bar.

I don't think this is an NVDA problem.  I think something is going on in Windows or a Windows program that is causing a progress bar to be displayed and NVDA is reading it.  If you alt tab around, do you see any window that gives any idea of what it might be?  Also, did this behavior start after any event, such as after updates were installed or after you installed a program?

That isn't the production release of NVDA.  The current release is 2021.3.5.

I believe there is a beta version of 22.x or perhaps more than one, but if you look at the web site, the current version is as I stated.

many or perhaps a lot of add-ons will be made compatible that aren't now.

I haven't wanted to update to 2022 because of this reason of the addon compatibility, I remember when 2021 came out, we had to wait for some many months for the popular addons to be updated.

Hi all,

Update: based on the debug log Janet sent me (without going into details):

  1. Janet is using Microsoft 365 Version 2203 (latest public release/build 15028).
  2. Too early to tell, but the problem may actually lie with the way Janet moves to the next line without realizing the formatting is on. For example, after enabling boldface she moves to the end of the line, then presses Enter to move to the next line. This actually does not disable formatting such as boldface because it will carry over to subsequent lines. The user MUST turn off one or more formatting commands before moving to the next line in order to not get characters bolded/underlined/italicized, etc.
  3. As Brian points out and confirmed by folks using/subscribed to it, Microsoft 365 releases since 2016 are versioned 16.0. The "real" development takes place in Microsoft 365 with perpetual releases such as 2019 and 2021 being a snapshot that will be maintained for several years. Think of it a somewhat similar to Windows 10 public releases versus long-term servicing channel (LTSC) versions where LTSC releases take a snapshot of the latest Windows 10/11 happenings every few years.

Therefore if my diagnosis is indeed correct, then this issue is something to be discussed on a Office mailing list and is not necessarily a screen reader problem that will be fixed by add-ons.

Cheers,

Joseph

Thanks, I still don't understand why windows 11 would announce something that's not there, even had a sighted person check and nothing was displayed on screen, even did a clean install of NVDA and would still get odd behavior until I disabled saidoption.

Basically, having that option checked, tells NVDA to tell you about any progress bar, whether it’s part of the app in focus or not.

Progress bar output

So just uncheck report background progress bars, and I believe that problem will go away.

However, didn't you say that you heard progress bars being announced even when programs aren't opened?  I'm not saying there is a problem, but if you shouldn't have any progress bars being displayed in the background or foreground, there may be a problem of something running that shouldn't be.

Jean, this happens because even programs that are running in the background, in the system tray for example, have progress bars, so even if all programs you know of are closed, that can still occur.

I don’t think it’s any more than that.

Hello,

Using latest build of NVDA along with Windows 11, I'm noticing that all of a sudden on its own, it reads progress bars. I am wondering if there's a way to turn this off, or what can be causing such behavior? The only way I get rid of this is if I turn off progress bar announcements, any help would be grately appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Eloquence and Punctuation Announcement

Hi Kenny,

Go to NVDA menu, the Code Factory, which is Insert/Caps Lock N, then O, then down to Eloquence.

Make sure that Process Punctuation is not checked. If it is, then it will override any NVDA setting you have.

You don't hear much punctuation when set to some.  The easiest solution might be to set it to none.  I'm not sure why you are having the problem because I don't hear dot spoken when punctuation is  set to some, either, but you can try the none setting.  You can use the shortcut command that cycles through the choices NVDA key p.

Hi Jean,

This is the Background Progress Bars option.  Clip from the user guide:-

Progress bar output

Key: NVDA+u

** End Of Extract **

So just uncheck report background progress bars, and I believe that problem will go away.

All the best
