I have a different out look since we use Pandoc in Brailleblaster to import documents. Pandoc is good but it is not perfect. You can not get all the effects you want and it makes choices sometimes you do not want. With that said and without goinginto specifics pandoc is a heck of a lot easier than what I used to write documents in the past, SGML, DocBook, Latex,

Hi

In reply to your question I use with Notepad++ the DSpell plugin which as I said usable with NVDA but has its problems.

Like others who replied to this topic I use pandoc, in my case under the
hood, integrated through my tool with Notepad++

It works fine but not as seamless as a word processor.

Like some others, I believe that formatters (like pandoc using Markdown)
are a better approach for the blind; wordprocessor are based on 'what
you see is what you get' and if you can't chances are that you get ...

Pandoc has its issues too; conversion from Markdown to say docx and back
does not always produce the same results so using this approach in a
busy office where people need to see each others documents can be a problem.

I will say no more as the general topic is probably not for this list.

Indeed.  But I would encourage those who might want to get into the nuts and bolts of the various options presented to do so on the Chat Subgroup.  The Subgroup has always been populated mostly with topics about using specific pieces of software that NVDA is being used to access, but where the discussion focuses on operating that software, and any mention of NVDA is incidental to that goal.  I can't remember the last time I saw a "social post" or a "chatty topic" that took off.  In any case, if one were to do so, you can just mute it, or any other topic you don't want to see more of.  But traffic on the Subgroup is very light compared to the main group.

Re: Looking for nvda friendly editors that support markdown and spell checking

This conversation has been fascinating to observe.  I've been around computing since the period when personal computers were first arriving on the scene, and I can vividly remember what word processors were, then, and they were much more like markdown or BBCode or other languages where formatting coding is visible and interspersed with actual text that the end consumer is meant to see after all the formatting has been applied and it was printed.

Almost all of us who can see adjusted our direct visual thinking to an "imagined formatted document in our heads" to try to deal with this.  But for the sighted world the rush was on, very early on, to have a WYSIWYG word processor.  It just makes things so much easier when vision is the sense being used to apprehend formatting directly on a screen.

But "what you see" really has no meaning when you don't see (and particularly if you never have seen).  All of this remains an "imagined formatted document in your head," perpetually, as you never see it.  I can absolutely get why something like Markdown is so appealing in those circumstances, as it makes the formatting, even if the actual appearance of that formatting is purely an abstraction, obvious as part of the document itself.  It has to be much easier for many to construct that formatted document in their heads when the formatting is plainly visible in a manner that can be immediately understood than it is to take something that is visibly formatted, but where extracting what's formatted how, and exactly where, has to be reverse engineered with great effort.

WYSIWYG is actually an impediment when it comes to conceptualization when the sensory modality needed for instant recognition is absent.  Not something I've thought about much before, but it really, really makes logical sense.

[And, yes, the above is not NVDA related, but is metaanalysis of the preceding conversation.  Shoot me, I've granted myself the rare exception to the rules.]

Oh, agreed. I love and use pandoc, not on windows, that might change soon enough. If you love the CLI, you will love pandoc. In my few years of using it, I have barely scratched the surface in what it can do, which is a lot. I call pandoc the Swiss army knife of converters as you can convert to pdf and a lot of other formats. I think I converted to epub once. S what ever tool you use for markdown writing and reviewing plus pandoc, you pretty much have it made.

Hi Steve:  That is correct on the subject of status bars for programsd in the background.  Even though, all programs are closed you still have programs that have been started and are running in the background and are minimumized so you will not see them. especially when in the background of the computer.

It may solve the symptom, but there may be a problem that needs to be addressed.  As I recall the original message, progress bars are read even when all programs that have windows are closed.  And since reading background progress bars is off by default, at this point, I wouldn't be particularly committed to the idea that this setting is on.

Either way, there may be a problem that needs to be looked into.

This is the Background Progress Bars option.  Clip from the user guide:-

Progress bar output

Key: NVDA+u

This option controls how NVDA reports progress bar updates to you.

It has the following options:

• Off: Progress bars will not be reported as they change.

• Speak: This option tells NVDA to speak the progress bar in percentages. Each time the progress bar changes, NVDA will speak the new value.

• Beep: This tells NVDA to beep each time the progress bar changes. The higher the beep, the closer the progress bar is to completion.

• Beep and speak: This option tells NVDA to both beep and speak when a progress bar updates.

Report background progress bars

This is an option that, when checked, tells NVDA to keep reporting a progress bar, even if it is not physically in the foreground. If you minimize or switch away from a window that contains a progress bar, NVDA will keep track of it, allowing you to do other things while NVDA tracks the progress bar.

** End Of Extract **

So just uncheck report background progress bars, and I believe that problem will go away.

I don't think this is an NVDA problem.  I think something is going on in Windows or a Windows program that is causing a progress bar to be displayed and NVDA is reading it.  If you alt tab around, do you see any window that gives any idea of what it might be?  Also, did this behavior start after any event, such as after updates were installed or after you installed a program?

Re: any work updating the speech history addon, formally clip copy, to the new NVDA 2022? #addonrelease #addonrelease

Hi,

I bet the first result that came up was systray List add-on entry from addons.nvda-project.org. Can you:

  1. Tell us the version of Systray List add-on you have?
  2. Try installing Add-on Updater and see if detects newer versions of add-ons you've got?

If it is what I suspect is happening, then I guess I need a reminder from someone to post a community-wide message about add-ons and updating them. As Gene pointed out, 2022.1 is in beta phase, and add-on authors are aware of making add-ons compatible with changes introduced in 2022.1 (at least folks subscribed to a certain NVDA related list or two in addition to this forum).

Cheers,

I might also take a look at that, if I can remember what this plugin does. I
just had a long day so am suffering from memory lapses from the past few
hours. I'll actually send now as I totally forgot what else I was going to
say. Sorry folks.  The plug seems interesting though and if I can add it to
my arsenal then Coolio.

Hi Louis,

Many thanks. I am going to go with ritage. This is the most convenient
option for me for now because I need this plugin for a single article for
now. The 14 trial should be sufficient though the plugin is accessible so I
may buy it later.

I'll correct my message.

You do quote the message you are responding to but it is so far below your message that I didn't look down far enough.  Since the quoted material is so far below the original, and I suspect a lot of people don't look that far, please refer to what you are discussing in the actual message.

You are evidently saying that NVDA IS the only screen-reader that offers read progress bars in background.  But since topics drift, I'm guessing.

If you had said something like NVDA is the only screen-reader to read progress bars in the background, instead of to offer it, your meaning would have been clear.

• Off: Progress bars will not be reported as they change.

Re: Eloquence and Punctuation Announcement

Quentin Christensen

I'm sure all the options have been shared in this thread, however to recap:

1) NVDA+n, then P for preferences, then p again for Punctuation / Symbol pronunciation
2) For symbols with a key, like dot or exclamation mark, press the key.  Repeatedly doing this will cycle through all entries for that symbol.  Note that some, like dot and exclamation mark DO have several entries, eg for a sentence ending dot or a dot (not ending a sentence, eg in a word), or "dot dot dot".
3) TAB to replacement and type what you actually want read.
4) TAB to Level and select which level (and higher) the symbol will be read at.
5) Tab to "Send actual symbol to synthesizer" and select whether to do that.  This might be the key one if Eloquence is reading out its own thing regardless.  Normally sending the symbol to the synth helps with things like - with a dot the synth will introduce the appropriate pause afterwards.  If you don't send the symbol then NVDA will read the next thing immediately without a pause.  BUT if the synth is insisting on reading something with the symbol, that could be why.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Have you used a Mac?  The grass is always greener, etc.  It is no small thing to discard all your knowledge and experience of one operating system to move to another.  And Windows gives you more screen[-readers to work with so if one doesn't do something, another may.

Sighted person would have to look very hard, if the progress bar flashes up very quickly, and they could easily miss it.

I’ve also heard it when the computer is idle.

All the best

Thanks, I still don't understand why windows 11 would announce something that's not there, even had a sighted person check and nothing was displayed on screen, even did a clean install of NVDA and would still get odd behavior until I disabled saidoption.

Good stuff.

Basically, having that option checked, tells NVDA to tell you about any progress bar, whether it’s part of the app in focus or not.

Hi Jean,

All the best

I don't think this is an NVDA problem.  I think something is going on in Windows or a Windows program that is causing a progress bar to be displayed and NVDA is reading it.  If you alt tab around, do you see any window that gives any idea of what it might be?  Also, did this behavior start after any event, such as after updates were installed or after you installed a program?

Hello,

Using latest build of NVDA along with Windows 11, I'm noticing that all of a sudden on its own, it reads progress bars. I am wondering if there's a way to turn this off, or what can be causing such behavior? The only way I get rid of this is if I turn off progress bar announcements, any help would be grately appreciated. Thanks.
