Janet,

This question would best be addressed in the Microsoft Office Accessibility Discussion Group or the Chat Subgroup, as it is about Word and is completely screen reader agnostic.

I have never seen the View menu used for header or footer, but the Insert [ALT + N] menu, followed by H if inserting a Header, or by O if inserting a footer.  If the header or footer already exists follow with E to edit or R to remove.

If you already have a header and/or footer, and have your focus in it, ALT + JH opens the Header & Footer Ribbon, which gives quite a few more advanced options for formatting.

Re: Punctuation

Quentin Christensen

When are they being read?

If I write:
Don't!

And up arrow onto that line, NVDA will read simply the word "don't", without articulating either the apostrophe or exclamation mark.

That happens with punctuation level set to none, some or most.  If I have punctuation level set to all then NVDA reads "don tick t bang".

If I right arrow through the word, then NVDA will always read "d o n tick t bang" regardless of the punctuation level

Given you worded them "apostrphe" and "exclamation" have you edited the "punctuation / symbol pronunciation" or dictionary?

In the punctuation / symbol pronunciation dialog, there are two entries for each.  Press the exclamation ! to jump to each of its entries.  Press apostrophe ' to jump to it's entry used when it is on its own.  The in-word apostrophe is three above the other one.  All four are set to symbol level "all" by default.

Re: Task bar disappears after closing portable nvda

Hi Farhan,

I just tried here and can't immediately replicate it.  I have seen previously - unrelated to NVDA - where explorer crashes, the taskbar can disappear or appear empty for a little while.  I've found when this happens in Windows 10, it usually sorts itself out after a few seconds, although the open windows may be in a different order to where they were previously.  Could it be something like that?   Does the taskbar come back after say 10 or 20 seconds?

Quentin.

If I exit the portable copy after confirming everything is working and turn on the standard or normal copy, the taskbar disappears. I neither can focus the task bar pressing windows + t nor pressing tab several times after focusing desktop. However, I have not verified by a sighted person. So, I cannot say strongly that it really disappears or nvda cannot focus on it. I have to restart windows explorer from the task manager to bring it back. I have noticed this strange issue two times.

locked Editing footers in Word documents

Janet Brandly

I haven’t had to edit footers but I have had to edit headers. I’m using Office 365, Windows 10, and the latest stable version of NVDA.

From within the main document press AltV for the View menu then H for header. This will place your curser within the header where you can edit it. Just press Escape to go back into your main document. I’m sure you can get to the footer from the View menu but I don’t know the keyboard shortcut. Perhaps F?

Hope this helps,

Graphical Links and newsletters

Nermin

Hi all,

I'm subscribed to a daily newsletter where there are links to various articles. Before the actual headline, NVDA will read links that roughly follow this pattern:

"mc5o7z9j-m5jrazgn-s5crejcn--0-… "

With JAWS, I have a way of configuring graphics link verbosity to omit these unlabeled graphics, but NVDA does not have something similar, at least not by default.

Can we add this functionality via add-ons or otherwise?

Lastly, is there a way of turning on something like "wrap to top", once I reach the end of a page or I land on the last heading, be that in a browser or an e-mail?

Regards,

Nermin

Re: trouble navigating and reading web pages.

Try this and see if it works better.

In NVDA preferences, settings. Now go down to advance and tab, hit space bar to open the options up.

now tab to Use UI with Microsoft edge and other chrome based browsers. Now set that to no. Tab to apply and then to ok.

now open edge and see if you get any problems.

I have had that turned off for the past 2 years with no problems. With it on browsers of any kind are not usable.

The feature you are describing has been removed from Dropbox.  Now, it displays as file explorer with no choice in the program to use the other display.  If that is the problem the person is having, your instructions should help but since Dropbox automatically updates the person well may not have that feature any longer.

But I'd like to know what problem the person is having with Dropbox.  I can still use it to share files in exactly the same way as I did before.

I know the subject is not dropbox, but I will make 1 comment.

I current.y have a free 100gig dropbox account which I got by buying a new hp pc last fall.

If I share files that are 1 or 2 hundred megabytes, no problem,  but if I start sharing files of 3 or 4 gig to several people,  that free account is usually frozen in less than  a day and stays frozen for a day or 2.

That’s a free account I’

M talking about.

Drop box works for me with NVDA, Jaws, Narrirator, Voice over on Mac, Voice over on IOS, and Talkback.  I am not sure the trouble your having but it is still one of the best secure methods.

Good morning all,

I hope you are keeping well and avoiding Covid!

I need to share a large zip file of 150mb with a colleague on a regular basis. Can you suggest a file transfer system that is accessible and could carry such a large file?

I used to use Dropbox but that does not seem to work any more.

All suggestions welcome.

All the best,

Cearbhall
