If it's not happening on your uncle's computer, then that at least hopefully means what you were originally trying to do worked, so that's good!

I'm still not sure why the portable copy was misbehaving on your PC though.

Auto-Switching Between Language-Specific Speech Configurations

Bhavya shah

Dear all,

I am unequally familiar with different languages and therefore prefer
listening to them at varying speeds. Furthermore, I prefer to use
different speech synthesizers for different languages (say ESpeak-NG
for English, OneVoice for Spanish, perhaps Vocalizer for Hindi, etc.).
With NVDA's built-in facilities, as far as I am aware, the extent of
the on-the-fly customizability I have is: (a) altering speech rate
using the synth settings ring, and (b) enabling automatic language
switching to move between the different voices of the currently active
synthesizer. Of course, other settings can be changed using the
Settings dialog. Given this background, suppose I am consuming content
which contains text in more than one language (e.g. a textbook for
English speakers to learn Spanish). Since I care to understand all of
the text, I may use min{preferred speech rate for language1, preferred
speech rate for language2, ...}, meaning that I am listening to a lot
of text in the known language at excessively slow speeds.
Alternatively, I might use an add-on like SwitchSynth (or alter
settings each time) to manually toggle between preferred speech
configurations when I encounter a language, which is (i) somewhat
cumbersome, and (ii) often impractical when different languages appear
simultaneously (e.g. by being on the same line).

Is there some creative approach - configuration profiles, add-on, etc.
- for me to set language-specific speech configurations (the speaking
rate, the synth and its voice, etc.) in advance to which NVDA can
auto-switch when it detects text in that language?

I would greatly appreciate any tips and suggestions.

Dear all,

Tyler, that makes a lot of sense in retrospect - I checked that option

Brian, I really appreciate the suggestion. Unfortunately, I deal with
Spanish in Word and Edge, which applications, of course, I use
extensively for non-Spanish tasks too.

Thanks.

Re: Changing Symbol Pronunciation For Particular Language

I can think of a couple of possible options.  If you are using the same software when dealing with Spanish, which you do not use when using other languages, could you set this up in a configuration profile?  Or you could use the NVDA Add-On, Application Dictionary, similarly and perhaps with greater ease.

I have generally found the fastest way to get licensing issues resolved is by "going straight to the source" when that option exists, particularly when it exists at no cost.

And for the record, this is another example of something that has no direct tie to NVDA at all.  It's a licensing issue with Microsoft Office, pure and simple.  The exact same steps to resolution, whatever they may end up being, will be taken regardless of your screen reader of choice.

As I said, you need to give details.

Another thing to check is that you do not have any Dictionary entries associated with the punctuation symbols you are complaining about.  If there are any, delete them, the Dictionary is not the correct place for them.

Step 7 describes what I experience every time when sorting a document in excel.

I am using Office 2016 in Windows 10 and latest NVDA – all latest versions.

This is a noisy and unnecessary babble of information. I always press the left alt key to silence it so that I can actually hear the options in the next drop down box.

I can also replicate this when I move away from the spreadsheet to another application and swing back again with alt+tab. This generates the full text that William describes.

The elements I hear are:

1.The Sheet title followed by the addition of "dash Excel"

2. Then "unavailable"

3.Then "Sort dialog, Sort widnow"

4. Then "Data Grid"

5. Then "Sort data Item 1 of 1"

6. Then "Order combo box, smallest to largest collapsed"

If I do not change the three boxes, "order by" "sort on" or "order", I do not get this echo as I tab from combo box to combo box.

However, as soon as I activate any one of these  combo boxes, I get the full whack of all six elements described above when I tab away from the combo box.

If I keep the alt key pressed when I press alt +tab to return to the Excel window from another application window, I hear the sheet title plus "dash Excel" but no mention of "Unavailable". However, when I let go the alt key, I then get the repetition of the Title and all six parts of the announcement.

This is an awful lot of verbiage and it has no value to me as a user.

All the best,

Cearbhall

I can replicate the first part - although just to confirm, the data itself is still read, it's just that you get the extra unnecessary list box list item information as well, correct?

For the next part, step 7, I couldn't replicate that, but maybe I was doing it slightly differently.

Would you be able to write it up at https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues please?

Kind regards

Quentin.

Hello,

1. Open any excel file

2. filled the worksheet with some data with the first row as the header

3. select all existing data by ctrl +a

4. go to data tab, press sort button

5. tab to any of the dropdown menu

6. press up or down arrow, every time when I press up or down arrow, nvda
will say list box  list xxxx

7. after I have selected one of the item and press tab, nvda will repeat
the name of the current worksheet and says excel unavailable, followed
by the next item.

Would you please comment on whether this is a nvda or excel problem? Thanks.

William
