Dear Folks,

I admit that I don't regularly read these list messages and, therefore, probably
missed reading an earlier exchange about this topic. I have just updated to
Office 2016 and find that in Outlook NVDA does not read to me whether a message
is marked as read or unread. Is there some setting I need to change in Outlook?

Blank messages from Freelists

Cearbhall O'Meadhra

Hi,

During the past year there was some discussion about some emails coming from freelists with a blank message body.

This is happening again and I cannot find the solutions which were presented earlier.

I have found the Microsoft instructions to stop security add-ins in Outlook that have prevented the deletion of the message body under whatever unexplained conditions applied at the time. I do not have any of the mentioned add-ins which include AVG. It appears that Outlook may be the culprit. Any advice?

I am using Windows 10, outlook 2016 and NVDA 2016.3 on a desktop PC.

All the best,

Shirley,

I usually go to the page display menu and choose continuous reading. That seems to let NVDA keep scrolling through the pages sequentially. I can go from page to page using control+page down. In "page Navigation" you can also move from page to page and there is a "go to page "option in that menu.

While using NVDA to read a large PDF file, I don't want to open all of the pages at once. However in reading one page at a time, NVDA doesn't scroll down when I get to the bottom of that page; instead it just wraps around to the top of the page again. Is there a way to stop this?

Re: Calm radio

Well as long as they have a streaming link your standard media player should pick it.
asc/asx is windows media player.
m3u/pls is winamp or general playback.
see what you can do, you may for example have to find the link for overseas or mobile phones or something to get an actual playable streaming link rather than your web player, but after that you should be able to just load and it runs.

Re: Calm radio

Hmmm a lot of websites for radio are flash based and are just not that good.
One thing I use a lot which has a lot is iheart radio, just search for it by name.
Its advertised on just about every station I have here in new zealand and does a lot more.
Its free to join and its fully apped on every standard device.
Its accessible as far as I can see and the quality is slightly better than fm though it does depend on the station of choice ofcause.
For example if it is just an am station, it will be mono but the quality will be fm or slightly better with maybe a little more digital noise but still better.
I have not tried other features though.

Re: The unknown issue with mozilla fire fox and thunderbird

Hi Brian

I put a later version of fire fox on there i think it was version 49 and
when i set it up it works well every thing is back to normal. I am sure
her version was 47 at that time. So hopefully it will not happen again.
but if it does cross fingers not, i will repeat the process.

There must of been a bug that caused it in the earlier version.
I forgot to mention also the portable version done the same with saying
unknown in both fire fox and thunderbird.

it was really weird it would act normal in some parts and weird in
others. But since it has been done it is all back to normal. It is the
first time I have seen this problem and took a bit of time to figure it
out. some how it seemed to affect some other programs yet others were ok.
I was lucky also i was able to have remote access to help her she can
get confused and hit wrong keys at times, so was far quicker for me to
do it as she lives 45 minutes north of where i live. Plus i have a good
knowledge of computer related stuff and where to look.

If it helps some one else to sort out the same problem it is worth it.

Subject: [nvda] The unknown issue with mozilla fire fox and thunderbird

Hi guys

A while back i emailed the list about problems that I was having with a
persons computer running windows 10. What it was doing was in mozilla
fire fox you could not use single letter navigation keys, tab or any
thing. You could not even get into the menus up the top when the alt key
was used. It was unusable with mozilla fire fox. NVDA kept on saying
unknown. Browse and focus mode did not work either.

There was some other problems but that saying unknown was the main ones.

Also when you went into mozilla thunderbird, it would open, but when you
went to use the tab key to get to the tree view it would say unknown
etc, You could not even get into your emails and or access the menus up
the top. Also unusable.

The above problem is now fixed.

The steps were.

I thought it was nvda having a corrupted nvda.ini file.

So nvda was reset to factory defaults. That did not fix the problem.
NVDA was completely removed all together and also the references to nvda
under the %appdata% section referring to nvda. This was deleted.NVDA was
then reinstalled and then tested it again. I still had the same problem
with nvda saying unknown both in fire fox and mozilla thunder bird.

Next mozilla fire fox was uninstalled from the pc.

I then went into the %appdata% area and found a folder referring to
mozilla and had a look inside of it..

I ended up deleting the settings file, then decided to delete the folder
for mozilla all together.
i then closed out of it then decided to see if it made any difference in
thunderbird. This time I was able to tab through to where my folders
were in the treeview, go into them read my messages etc.
I can not remember if i had to reboot or to clear the cache.
So the problem is fixed now and then i reinstalled mozilla fire fox and
set it up.

Mozilla fire fox is now working correctly i can use single letter
navigation keys etc even access the menus. What I did when i reinstalled
it was grab the latest version of it as I noticed when the other one was
uninstalled it was version 47.

So both are running correctly i can access the menus in both programs
and use them like normal.

I have seen in the last day or couple of days a similar problem on the
list with nvda saying unknown multiple times in fire fox.

so if you had the same sort of problems as mentioned above with mozilla
fire fox and thunder bird, this is how i fixed it.
Maybe it might help someone else.

This is a great thread. Anyone got any Cuban Pesos or Mexican ones? Just kidding. My question is how do you find the dictionary file for the SAPI 5 synths that MS has on board?

John,

I'm using Microsoft SAPI5 David as well.  I hadn't thought about changing synthesizers but there had still ought to be a way to force an exception such that anytime the whole word "cup" is seen, which requires a white space character before the C and after the P, it's pronounced as "cup" because that's what I want it to be pronounced as.  I thought that was the whole idea behind the dictionaries.  There are lots of people who work with jargon of various sorts who want to force certain abbreviations to be read as though they're the whole word, and the like.  There has got to be a way to tell NVDA to tell whatever gets passed "cup" that it's always cup, but I'll be darned if I can figure out what!

Cearbhall,

There are *lots* of online resources for regular expressions, but if you can lay your hands on the O'Reilly [publisher of "all things Unix"] book entitled Mastering Regular Expressions by Jeffrey E. F. Friedl that would not be a bad place to start.  Here are three different cheat sheets that I found helpful when I was trying to refresh my memory about how these things work.  One of the trickiest concepts is that you can have a regular expression match zero or more occurrences of a given character, which seems very odd, but if you think about how time is conventionally written out in many instances, there is no leading zero before 10 AM (or PM) and the one may or may not be there in any given instance of the time, so you need to be able to match zero or more occurrences of the digit 1 at the start.

https://www.cheatography.com/davechild/cheat-sheets/regular-expressions/

http://www.rexegg.com/regex-quickstart.html

http://www.regular-expressions.info/reference.html

I have to warn you that it generally takes a bit of time to wrap one's head around regular expression syntax.  The nice thing is that there are websites that allow you to test the regular expression you've put together against a pattern to see if it will match it and even some that will allow you to specify a replace option so that you can see precisely what you'd get as a replacement by piecing together bits of the original string in different order, with different separators, etc.  Here is the site that I preferred for that purpose:

Re: NVDA and Fractions

A very late PS on that regular expression I posted for capturing the time on Windows to make it pronounce correctly.  In my original I had the literal character space between the last digit and the A or P in AM or PM which does work for Windows system time.  But, if someone formatted time with more than one space, or a tab, or the like between the last digit and the A or P the AM/PM part would not be captured correctly.  The corrected regular expression uses the \s special character with the + quantifier to say any one or more occurrences of any of the "white space" characters.

([1]*[0-9]+)(.)([0-5]{1}[0-9]{1})\s+([a,A,p,P][m,M])

and use the following as the replacement expression:  \1 \3 \4
