Do you mean download with Firefox instead of Chrome? It sounds as though the progress bar isn't accessible in Chrome. How much does it matter? If it's a long download, checking off and on should

You only need to use the app to download the epub it should appear in your documents folder I think its under ebooks or something I forgot where exactly anyway once you find where the extracted epub

After starting the download you need to hit control plus J and this will take you to the downloads window. In this window you can see the progress of your downloads.
