You can turn off e-mail scanning. Whether a program does so by default is not a proper criteria on which to judge it.

Well I had a few drives that failed all at once.
I was able to recover all the file names but not the contents.
While the majority of files could be transfered, as well as some stuff locally stored,

I still use them because they are so simple and text based. There are still some active ones and you can always filter spam. The one I'm using is still Outlook Express. Maybe not ideal , but good

Well I've not seen anything other than Thunderbird, but there are some that run under Linux.
Seems strange to me, but then the powers that be are doing their best to kill Usenet, particularly binary
