I see no benefit in putting drives to sleep on a short term basis except when using a laptop if you intend to leave it on for extended periods of not being used and you want to save battery power.

Thunderbird maybe? I use Outlook Express, but then I'm quirky and a bit old school and did not mind paying for the hack files to make it run. It has been worth it for me to be able to still operate
