The System Requirements section of the NVDA 2018.2 User Guide would say which versions of Windows are supported, so yes, please consult that, before posting version information to this group.

I am working with nvda 2018.1 on a win7 machine so not nvda 2017.4.

Except for if you are on a workstation where you do not have access to upgrade to Windows 10, given your message, then you should use NVDA 2017.4.
