You won't need to have a desktop shortcut or one in the start menu or taskbar/quick launch bar, but I'm never without at least one, if not both, of those for when I want to simply

Avast is a much better thought of program than Windows Defender or MSSE. You shouldn't have more than one antivirus program running simultaneously. Windows Defender is more accessible but you said

I use Calibre (and I'll caveat that by saying I do have enough site to use the mouse as well as the keyboard).
It actually has keyboard shortcuts for most things but they're not as obvious to find as
