Several other things spring to mind. There has been a lot of talk that the emoticons are in the core now, so do you need the add on at all? also I'm totally confused about the state of the win 10

In case of Emoticons add-on, it might be that something is holding onto manifest file somehow, thus preventing package deletion.
As for config file error: might be caused by nvda.ini becoming

That may be what is supposed to occur, but time after time it goes mute and does not use the built in secure screen reader. Its not just that its opened behind either, even alt tabbing will not reveal

The problem is, Janet that you often have a catch 22 issue in this sort of case. NVDA doing a full update has probably decoupled all the old files and so there is no screenreader to read it, hence the

I do not think this is the problem here, it sounds to me more like a weird impossible to write to a folder issue. Maybe an existing file is locked permanently due to a bad shutdown. There are some

Now I had a similar issue with virtual recorder after a windows update. I had to uninstall it and reinstall it again and it then functioned. It would not be the first time a windows update has altered

I also had the problem that the new version of the Emoticons add-on failed to install: in my case there was an error with the installation of that add-on’s update when I used the add-on updater

probabily you are using "None" as level for Punctuation/symbol pronunciation.
Raise the level to "Some" or more with nvda+P then try to read emoji.
