I too am very grateful for NVDA. I used to use a different screen reader but I couldn't afford the upgrades anymore so I switched to NVDA full-time in 2011. I haven't looked back.

There are flatbed scanners designed specifically for scanning books, called book scanners. I'm not sure how much they cost but they won't damage the spine of the book. You can use a flatbed scanner

Yes of course, but even then one can actually edit it so it will work if displayed as html. You just have to remove the clutter that the hyperlink coding and the ascii coding show up as. I suspect
