Hmmm, I see.
Can you try the following for me please:
Press NVDA+number row 1 to turn on input help mode.
Press the following keys in order: Control+NVDA+left arrow, Control+NVDA+right

In my experience, the system sounds go with the main audio. NVDA sounds state with NVDA.

Try alt+Windows+c to bring up a conversation and alt+windows+shift+i to destroy the conversation buffer. that is, assuming you're using Windows 10. If not, the keystrokes are different.

I agree, I use this all the time. When I’m presenting slideshows with audio, it’s a way of having NVDA speak on my laptop but not over the speakers.
