Nothing you say supports the low RAM theory. It contradicts it. Why would JAWS work well with the browsers and not NVDA? Assumedly, you have 32bit Windows. If you didn't, you would need more than

I had exactly that same problem a few days ago. It went away by itself when I rebooted windows and excel or maybe when I restarted NVDA. But I'm using an older version of excel; from office

I solved hat easily enough. with narrator I navigated to where my ninite folder was and installed nvda from there.

Virtual dub does look very accessible, but when I go to the source
from where I need to open a video, nvda does not read the list of
videos for me to select and open the desired video.
