I can guarantee you that this should not be the characteristic behavior. I've had pretty much any e-mail client crash on me at some point, but never consistently in response to using any mailto:

Hi, you are right in some cases.
On some lists with Jaws you can press Jawskey-shift-r, and the sender’s individual e-mail will come up. It seems to work in groups.io, but not on the nfbnet

I don't think there's a way to do this under Groups.io because the actual sender's address is not a part of the From: field.
If it were, you could use the standard Reply

Actually, if I open the context menu on the reply to sender link and then click on the compose email to choice then it does open a new email and does populate the to: field with the

Are you, by chance, using webmail? Mailto: links won't necessarily work smoothly with some webmail. If you bring up the context menu and copy that link, it is a mailto: link.

You don't have to get information from the profile and a lot of people won't have one. What e-mail program are you using? You can get the address from the message but the way may differ.

At the end of each message (or digest entry) there should be a "Reply to Sender" link for the sender of that message. That will trigger your e-mail client to open a compose window with that sender's
