Did you uncheck the status bar in thunderbird's view menu? Read the archives on this list and the TBird list for more info.

or if this is a feature in newer nvda alphas. when i now start thunderbird nvda repeat e.g: folder nvda, read 110 unread 2. is this a irritating new feature?

I just checked nvda application shortcuts, the one on my desktop is associated with ctrl+alt+n. If I chenge the associated keyboard shortcut, only the new one works, so I'd assume the nvda hook

No. The way NVDA works is it uses a keyboard hook.
This intercepts all keys, and lets NVDA decide what, if anything, it wants to do with them.

You do have to be in forms mode. The focus highlight evidently is providing incorrect information.
