If both machines have identical hardware (down to the video card level), it might be a driver or a software that runs on your HP machine that might be blocking NVDA from retrieving browse mode

I should say that I suspect many people don't understand why they can seem to review text with numpad 4 and 6 in NVDA in the same way as JAWS but that the cursor doesn't move when they experiment

The first thing that springs to mind is using one of the speech dictionaries, presuming you have letters being pronounced, and substitute the space character with no replacement.
