Normally, as Gene noted, you should be able to use NVDA+end / NVDA+shift+end to read the status bar, however there is a bug preventing that from Working in File Explorer in Windows 10 -

I don't know what Windows 10 does, Windows 7 displays a status line you can read that tells you the number of files selected.
As I recall, the NVDA command to read what is selected only applies to

Indeed, I had thought of that which is why I tried outlook in safe mode. No
go. See my previous message where the culprit proved to be a corrupt
configuration file.
