In general, the error sound is played in Alpha and Beta versions of NVDA when an error is written to the log. This is not played in the RC or stable builds, although the error will still be written

Hi Don, Unfortunately you can't have NVDA portable start automatically once you plug in the thumb drive. This is a windows limitation. I personally turn on Narrator to help me start NVDA portable.
