Yes, with some exceptions. I use apps that are not open but are in the system tray and they play sound. The nly way for me to get to them is via the volume mixer like someone on here suggested. So

Recommend to use edge web WhatsApp. Use the browse mode while you are
reading the messages. While you are writing the messages you can shift
to focus mode with latest NVDA. And ubgrade latest

Actually not all apps will appear there for what ever reason but I do see them in the sound mixer. I really nave no clue as to why but both work dependinging on what you need to do.

If you type sndvol in the run dialog or in the Windows start menu and press enter, the volume control will open. You don't have to decide which utility to use, you will be in the correct one

I type sound mixer to get it from the start menu. When I open it I tab to applications list and select the one I want. Then tab twice past the mute button to adjust the output volume slider.

I just checked. In the Brave and probably other Chrome-based browsers, what I said will work. In Firefox, you first have to issue the command numpad insert numpad 8 to move up one level and

In addition to what I said in my previous message, it appears you don't have to have the audio playing. It does appear that you have to have played at least a bit of audio in the application

What happens if you try? If you cannot find the app then go to sounds in control panel, and tab to advanced and find your app there.
