Have you tried turning off browse mode and tabbing through the fields? You may hear the correct announcement if browse mode is off and be able to enter characters.

I think sometimes, Brian, that blind folks read instructions, listen
to videos, etc, that are made by & for sighted folks (which is a good
thing) but then feel that those instructions are the only way
