Re: ZOOM: Can NVDA announce state of mute/unmute?
Arlene
Hi, all you do is hold down the alt key and hit a. You will be muted. When you unmute do the same thing. I tried with both jaws and NVDA. When I mute Jaws will say your audio is muted. NVDA says muted. You know you are muted. When you unmute, NVDA will say unmuted. Jaws will say your audio is unmuted.

During a ZOOM session I would like to hear the status of mute/unmute. When I press down the spacebar, NVDA starts to announce “unmute” but does not complete speaking the word “unmute”. When I let up the spacebar NVDA announces “mute”. It is often impractical to hold down the spacebar to speak. If I manage to click on the mute/unmute icon, NVDA does not announce anything. I know there is a red slash though the icon but that is too hard to see. Similarly, if I use ALT-A to change the state of mute/unmute, NVDA does not announce this. I feel I am missing something here and therefore seek your advice. Is there a way to make this work better? It would also be really handy to have a way to announce the state of mute/unmute without actually changing the state by the controls mentioned above. Something like a hotkey that causes the state of mute/unmute to be spoken would be great. Sometimes during a session I just want to know if I am muted or unmuted because I may have forgotten the status. Thanks. This is a great forum!! Milton

Use the short cut command alt a to switch between mute and unmute. I don't know why you don't hear the status spoken fully when you do what you do. When I use alt a with NVDA, I hear the status spoken correctly.

Re: Toggling between keyboards (long description)
Hello,
First, a huge thanks for having read the Welcome Message and having done some digging!! From what you are saying, this is not really an NVDA question, but is related to Windows 10. The solution, based on your description, is using WinKey+B to throw focus to the System Tray portion of the Notification Area, then right arrowing to the control for that toggle and activating it when you wish to toggle character sets. If the toggle button happens to be hiding in your overflow area, then activate the notification chevron and up arrow or left arrow through the buttons that reside there until you find that toggle, and activate it. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 20H2, Build 19042 Any idiot can face a crisis. Toggling between keyboards (long description)
Jiho Kim
Hello!
I read the automated “welcome message” in its entirety :) and I have a question: It may not be 100% related to the NVDA – not sure where to post this question. It may belong to the “chat” section but I need help regardless. I also checked the archive but no success. First of all: English is not my first language – I may have some spelling errors or nonsensical sentences. Secondly: we use Windows 10 (I think it’s relevant) and very new to NVDA or screen readers in general (other than voiceover for iphones?). well, I am still not sure if this is the right place to look for help. In short: the issue is about being able to write in Korean letters. I know how to toggle between pre-installed keyboards in windows (left Alt + left Shift by default) but If you change the keyboard layout with Alt+Shift to Korean, one more small button appears on the right side of the taskbar. Usually, you can toggle between Korean letters and English (or whatever romanised language) letters by left-clicking the button in the taskbar with mouse or some Korean keyboards has an extra (physical) key between spacebar and right Alt key. In my case, I don’t have the extra physical key, that’s assigned to this toggle button and cannot use the mouse. I googled for very long time but could not find anything. I was hoping to find some solution here. If needed, I can provide some screenshots(?)
FYI: we have no issues reading Korean (you can simply change the setting in NVDA) or changing the language settings in general. It seems, that’s one of the common issues from the archive.
Many thanks! Jiho Kim

Re: Getting rid of the word linefeed
Gene
You can probably use the speech dictionary.
You may have to experiment on how to write what you want not spoken. Then,
there is what may be a much easier work around, just turn off speech before you
start to move in that way.

Re: Filling Out Word Documents with form elements?
Hello, Solved! I called the Microsoft help desk through Be My Eyes, and they told me there was a dialog that asked me to enable macros, so I pressed F6, hit OK, and space to check the box works! NVDA does not say "checked" or "unchecked" when hitting space though. Thanks, On Wed, Feb 24, 2021 at 2:02 PM Brandon Keith Biggs via groups.io <brandonkeithbiggs=gmail.com@groups.io> wrote:

Filling Out Word Documents with form elements?
Hello, I'm trying to fill out a word document that contains checkboxes and edit fields. NVDA reads the checkboxes and edit fields, and I know I'm in the element, but no matter what I do, I am unable to check the boxes or ensure what I'm typing is in the edit field. The document is attached. Any ideas? If there is a better method of making this document work with NVDA, please let me know! Thanks,

Re: How to know the beginning and ending of line in Word
Unless you're doing something odd in MS-Word then the answer is, "No, not really," if you mean some identifying character for start and end of line.
Word, like most word processors, flows text so that it fits between your specified margins, using your specified spacing, without the need to hit Enter to start a new line (doing so typically starts a new paragraph). There are commands to take you to what is the start and end of the line as currently flowed: Home and End, respectively. Single key presses from anywhere in that line of text. Re: Sleep mode
Joseph Norton
Hi Tyler:
So I gather I can’t put sleepMode=True in an ini file named after the app? --- Not a problem, however. I know I can handle what you suggest.
Actually, what I’m using it for is the VBNS (Virtual Braille ‘n Speak) emulator. You wrote something similar, and I think it put NVDA to sleep automatically.
Anyway, I will try what you suggest, as I want NVDA to go to sleep upon launch of DOSBOX-X.EXE and wake up after I exit or alt-tab away.
Or, I think your program is in the Talking DosBox distro, so I may just grab it and run it.
Thanks much, since this allows me to experiment with both without worrying about using NVDA+shift+S each time I launch the program.

The easiest way to do this is to enable the scratchpad in NVDA's advanced settings, then create a file in appModules called appname.py, where appname is the name of your executable without the extension. Put this in it:
import appModuleHandler
class AppModule(appModuleHandler.AppModule):
sleepMode=True
You can also create an addon, which would be the better option if you wanted to redistribute this, but that's a bit more involved.

Re: Zoom Enhancements add-on
I have the chat alerts on even though I’m not a host. I can always access the last 10. I’d rather for me hear things blab as I don’t always hear the sound. Plus I always save the chats anyway, so when I get out of the meeting I have a copy of the chats.

I don't know if how it works should be changed because I almost never receive chat messages in the meetings I attend. But it would seem to me that a sound option should be offered along with the option to have something spoken because the member may not want to be distracted from what is being spoken when a message comes in.
The host may want to hear who a message is from when it comes in but an attendee who is not a host might really prefer a sound.

As for interacting with the chat window though, I am not sure why anyone is suggesting changing the way that works, as I find the chat window it’s self fairly accessible, but I have no idea when to check it because I am not alerted when a message arrives.

I just shift tab and read each message. You can also with the add on hit I think it’s alt 1 to alt 0. Read the documentation that ships with said add on or using the nvda add on documentation add on. That last sentence was not supposed to be a tongue twister.
