I would like to suggest the opposite.

Download the latest alpha version of NVDA from here.
https://ci.appveyor.com/project/nvaccess/nvda/build/alpha-23227,dbd6c119

Don't install it, just run the executable file, and when the window comes up to ask install, make a portable version, or keep running (what is called a temporary copy), do that--just select keep running.

Then, Press NVDA+n, followed by t, to get to the NVDA tools menu.
Next, choose the option for "Run COM Registration Fixing Tool", and follow the prompts.

We have just finished rebuilding the internals of that tool to fix more problems, and to work much better on 64-bit Windows.

After you run that tool, quit NVDA, and start your existing installed copy of 2020.4 again, and see if your problem is resolved.

A note to anyone else reading this: this is specific advice, to this user only, not a general suggestion. There's no reason for anyone else to try this unless you are having this exact problem

But don't.  There is no issue with NVDA 2020.4 and Chrome, or shouldn't be.  And soon enough 2020.4 will be history and 2021.1 will be the only in-support version of NVDA.

We want to make sure it works with NVDA as currently released.

Heaven knows that NVDA and Chrome can and do play very well together when everything is "as it should be."

And, for the time being, were there something truly NVDA-centric but in the Windows 11 ecosystem, I am asking that this be discussed on the Chat Subgroup.

Until Windows 11 is released it's not "in support" nor can we know whether what we have to work with this week is what we'll have next week as far as the Windows side of things goes.  It's really a grand experiment for the time being.

Once Windows 11 goes live, then it's appropriate to have discussions regarding NVDA running in Windows 11 on the main group.  And it will become critical that all members start to identify whether it's Windows 10 versus Windows 11 that they're running NVDA under, as there will be a long period of "mixed use" ahead of us.

NVDA not working with Chrome

huser3476@...

 Hi everyone,
I am using NVDA 2020.4 with windows 19041.1052 with the latest version of Google Chrome.

From few days, I have noticed a bug in NVDA that, NVDA is completely inaccessible with Chrome. There is no spoken feedback while using Chrome.

Also, in places like D drive or desktop and apps like Notepad, NVDA doesn't respond to alt+ space or application key.  Basically, NVDA doesn't speak while navigating through options that appear.

Does anyone know how to resolve this issue?

Regards,
Saurav Hegde

I do this as a matter of course with the links to any of the stuff I have hosted on Google Drive so that those who click through/activate will not have to go through any nonsense beyond picking where they want to save the file being downloaded.   It is not a trivial issue to parse out the File Identifier and reconstruct that link by hand.

That this add-on works with all of the major cloud file sharing services and deals with tel: links is just incredibly handy.

Welcome to the NVDA Community Add-ons website - Direct Link #nvdaaddonsfeed

nvda@nvda.groups.io Integration <nvda@...>

Direct Link

  • Author: Fawaz Abdul Rahman
  • Version: 1.0
  • NVDA compatibility: 2019.3 and beyond
  • Download stable version

Functionality

The purpose of the addon is to convert the Dropbox, Google Drive or oneDrive (both personal and business) links to a direct link, furthermore, it generates a direct link to a WhatsApp chat with the chosen selected phone number.

Usage

  • Select or copy a shared Dropbox, Google Drive or oneDrive link
  • Press alt+NVDA+l to convert the link. The resulting URL will be in your clipboard.
  • Similarly for the phone number, copy or select the number you like to chat with or share and press the same shortcut (alt+NVDA+L).
  • if you like to open the resulted link in your browser, press alt+NVDA+shift+l.

    Why the direct link?

A direct link will allow you to get the well-known save dialog box directly if you open it in the browser, without being hassled by the hosting company download page and locating the download link. Moreover, the direct link can be used to stream a file or view a file in certain programs such as media players (if coming with URL support). Likewise, if WhatsApp is common in your country, rather than creating a new contact each time if you need to chat with someone, weather it is a customer or technical support, you can simply select the number or copy it and start chatting right away. Even more, you can share the WhatsApp link of your own number if people usually need to contact you in case you work as a freelancer.

    Notes

  • A link of a folder cannot be converted; the link has to be directing to a file.
  • Make sure the link you are sharing is public (anyone with the link can access) in order for it to be successfully converted.
  • You can change the hotkeys from the NVDA menu> preferences> input gestures.
  • If you find a certain format of a phone number that is not detected, you can email me with an example.
  • Certain type of files and sizes in Google Drive might take you to a page that says "Google Drive can't scan this file for viruses." in that case, you have to click on download anyway link.

    Acknowledgements

A huge thanks goes to the following friends, without them I couldn't have made it happen:

  • Qais Alrefai for testing the add-on and providing me with various material to test with, and also for his observations and general idea for the addon.

  • Marina Amir for translating the add-on to French, language editing and testing.
  • Riad Assoum for translating the add-on to Arabic.
  • all testers.

the question was how to follow a link, return to the same page, and be where you left off and that is what I answered.  However, farther in the thread, it was said that this may be a European mandated cookie message that was moving focus.  I don’t know if my suggestion would work if that is the case.  it wasn’t discussed further and how to deal with the cookie message was.  I haven’t tried shift enter on links that open material on the same page.

You should be able to solve the problem by causing the page you want to work with to open in a new window.  For example, when you are using search, write the search item and instead of pressing enter, press shift enter.  That opens the results page in a new window.  When you have finished working with it, close the new window with alt f4.  You are now back on the page where you were and you should be in exactly the same place you were because the page has been opened all the time in another window and you did nothing to change your position.

I can’t test that here because I don’t see the banner, looking at the page from the United states, but whatever the cause, this method should work around the problem.

I apologise for not specifying the exact page. It is https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/

I notice it when I activate Groceries, which seems to change the page but the address remains as https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/

I think it is exactly what Chris says, the EU's GDPR banner seizing focus. If I search for an item and then add it to my basket, then go back to the main Groceries page, the focus jumps to the GDPR banner about cookies, which appears right at the bottom of the page.

As I say, it's not a major hastle to jump back to the top of the page or to press shift+e to jump to the previous search field, it's just an annoyance to be taken down to that cookie banner every time I have to go back to that page. Anybody who also pays attention to the TAVIP blind computer discussion  group will also recall that Sainsbury's have been messing around with their website, but they have been listening to difficulties that TAVIP members have expressed, which is good to hear.

Does Windows 11 have fast boot on by default?   If so, as in Windows 10, you won’t hear the Windows sound unless you restart Windows, not shut down then boot.  If you restart with fast boot on, that completely reboots Windows.  If fast boot is on and you shut down, you aren’t doing a full boot of Windows.  Some of Windows remains ready to run which makes boot faster.
