Hi All,

I would like to include some windows key shortcuts for Excel in the user guide (like control+arrows to find data in a sheet). It occurred to me that a lot of people are not aware of this and look in the NVDA user guide thinking that is all.
How can I efficiently contribute to this? Should I make a pull-request on the github of NVDA?

Thanks in advance,
Falko

Hi

You can use the shift key to pause /resume speech when a “say all” command has been issued but I don’t think it will work to block message announcements during a Skype call.

Hi List,

Maybe I've missed some posts on thisthread.

The simplest way to pause and resume nvda reading is to press the shift key,

like a toggle,  off and on.

It works.

Another? As in: other than speech mode off, which does exactly that?

Or, do you mean a command that will do what speech mode off does, but also

globally disable keyboard intercept as sleep mode does for an application?

If you want that, I don't know of anything, but then I can't imagine why

Setting your speech synth to "No speech" will do something similar to speech

with sleep mode.

Re: What are the accessible mathematics read and write solutions?

Sascha Cowley

There is MathPlayer, which works with NVDA and Firefox to make some maths content accessible. It also supposedly works with Microsoft Word, though I have personally never managed to get this working.
With experimental UIA support enabled for Word, native equations in Word are fairly accessible, or were when I tried it some months ago. I've also had a little success using equations in Google Docs, though I had trouble inputting them. I have not worked with the Docs equation editor very much at all, though, so I may have just been missing something.
Using LaTeX, or a similar (even ad hoc) plane text notation is often successful. The advantage with LaTeX is that it produces nicely typeset output. Unfortunately, it is extremely picky, and debugging output is often not very helpful. Plus it's just a lot to learn.

Hi,

How do you write math equations to the sighted person with nvda?
Are there accessible methods for reading and writting mathematical meterials?

Of course, here's a case where being sighted, which I am, and able to view the status sans a screen reader makes all the difference. I can absolutely understand how beeps speech mode could be handy every once in a while, particularly with long-running processing you want to be able to walk away from and monitor whether it's completed yet.

I didn't know that NVDA Sleep mode was application specific. Is there another command that allows for NVDA output to be suspended, entirely, while not requiring that one exit it? I could have sworn there was, but perhaps not.

You are evidently deleting cookies when you delete browsing data. I don't know what is making the site not work properly. it might be worth experimenting when it doesn't. You can tell browsers what to delete. You can try deleting other data first and save deleting cookies for last.

Another option might be to save your cookies, if that is the problem, at a time when the site is working properly. Do it as soon as you have reentered information and login is again automatic. Then, if deleting the cookies is necessary to solve the problem, restore the backed up cookies.

I don't know if you can back up cookies in the browser you are using. You can using Internet Explorer, but I haven't checcked other browsers.

I was going to point this out. That said,
I have found a periodic use for beeps speech mode, when performing a long, automated process in which NVDA is chatty, and wanting to be able to walk away from the computer and know when the process is done, but not be bothered by speech.
For example: encoding a large mpeg file, updating certain applications, etc. In these cases, the periodic beeps let me know something is still happening, without being overly distracting as speech would be.
As a consequence, I have stopped using the add-on

In this particular case, there may be some value to knowing that NVDA is trying to tell you something it thinks is meaningful during a Skype call, without actually having to be distracted with the resultant speech.

There is also the option of using NVDA Sleep Mode, the
toggle for which is NVDA+Shift+S (desktop keyboard layout) or Z (laptop).  But once you do this NVDA is off, completely off, without being shut down.
...within the app in which the command is performed. Other apps and services will still speak.

I just thought I'd throw in my $0.02 here for what it's worth. I don't
notice any performance issues if I don't clear everything for several
months, but I do it once in a while just because. I've been
considering doing that with Firefox here recently, but it would be the
first time it's been completely cleared in the two years I've had it,
though only four months of that has been as a primary browser.

And, if you're someone like me, who has never found the "Beep Speech" mode to be of any use, you can install the add-on:

NoBeepsSpeechMode

which removes that option and causes NVDA+S to toggle strictly between speech on and speech off.

There is also the option of using NVDA Sleep Mode, the toggle for which is NVDA+Shift+S (desktop keyboard layout) or Z (laptop).  But once you do this NVDA is off, completely off, without being shut down.  You must toggle again to bring it back.
