Re: Inconsistency with NVDA+t on desktop

Hi,
thanks for confirming. The more I think about it, the more I am of the
opinion that this might also be related to issue #8389, which I myself
reported, because in the final analysis it has to do with focus
tracking again. Sorry that this is becoming an exercise in
self-reference on my part, but I keep running into ramifications of it
and they are pretty much everything I currently dislike about NVDA,
meaning I pretty much love everything else.
Best,
Felix

Well that, we can probably accomplish. Sorry, I should have thought of this earlier. You need to run a traceroute to nvaccess.org, to see if you can even get out of Iran.

Here's how to do it in windows.
https://unh.edu/it/kb/article/how-to-trace-route-windows.html

The first hop should be your local network. The next several can be increasing levels of your local ISP.

Here's what I get (not using windows; your results may look different). Note that I have removed the first several hops, as they reveal a great deal about my location.:)

If you get out of Iran, you should probably start seeing some of the telia.net hops, as shown below.

Here is an excerpt from the Tor Blog providing information about this.  Accessibility was turned off for technical reasons I don't understand and that others may be able to explain.

This entry was written over six months ago.  Does that tell us something about the attention this problem has been given after an "alas" in the response?  Alas, a stylized response, doesn't cut it.  It wouldn't be "alas" if the browser became unusable for a significant number of sighted users.

Yes, we had to disable accessibility support on Windows system, alas. :( The problem is that mingw-w64 lacks some fixes which are probably not so easy to write. We have a bug open for now with further links to the underlying problem: https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/27503.

From one or two comments I've seen on a list I follow, it appears that recent Tor versions are not accessible.  If you want to use it, let us know and someone will make the last accessible version available.  It is version 7.5.6.  I don't use Tor, though I did on one or two occasions quite some time ago and I'm interested in it remaining accessible.  I would suggest that those who use it contact the Tor developers and discuss the accessibility problem.  It may be nothing more than turning on access in Tor.  For some reason, developers may have turned it off.

It may be the IP address that's being blocked, not the provider or site.
It appears that nvaccess.org is on a dedicated server, at the IP address
45.33.21.113
It may be only that IP address that's being blocked, especially if it changed
recently and the one it has now used to be something your government did want to
block.
The last time they changed anything in that record may have been in December of
2018, but that's only a guess based on some technical information and only the
nvaccess people can say for sure.

All that said, if you're getting a 403 error, that probably is nvaccess blocking
you for some reason, not the other way around.  Can you paste the full text of
the error you get?

Lastly, you may be able to use tor to access it.  A bit of work to get setup,
but if it is a blocking based on geographic location issue, that may very well
get you around it.  A VPN or a proxy is probably easier, but may not be free.

I doubt that the NVDA site has been blocked.  it is probably on a host, but I'm not sure what the correct word is, that has been blocked so nothing on that

A shared host, is what you're talking about. When many websites exist on one machine, probably at the same IP address. It is usually still possible to determine, however, if something is on a dedicated host (as opposed to a shared one), as browsing directly to the IP address will not result in an error or weird page, but will get you right to that site. That is the case here (see my other message).
With virtualization, load balancing, gatewaying, and so on, collectively cloud based web hosting, it is not always easy to tell any more whether something is on a single machine or many, but if the IP address loads the actual site, you can be reasonably sure that it is a dedicated resource and not a shared host, even though it may be several actual machines for that one site.

more technical knowledge can tell the list how you find out who hosts a web site and we may get information about who the host is for the NVDA site.
Well, you can look up the A record for the domain name with any kind of name service lookup tool, and then use that address to gather other information.

In this case, the dedicated (non-shared) server(s) is owned by Linode, which is a cloud hosting company.

You can find that here: https://www.abuseipdb.com/whois/45.33.21.113

But I don't think that knowledge will help the OP any. Likely the best solution for this, is for him to contact someone at NV AccessLimited, and find out whether they or Linode is blocking Iran, or blocking his specific IP address ranges. Linode used to claim that they didn't do this sort of thing, but that was a few years ago. I'm sure individual server owners could do it, if they wanted to embargo Iran for some reason.

Jumping Between Clickables

Luke Davis

Hello

Is there any reasonable way, or is there some way in development, to jump between items on a web page that are "clickable"?

The manual only mentions clickables in regards to the indicator in the braille section, and the checkbox in the document format configuration description, and even in this latter it is very sparse information.

I have found various discussions about clickables, whether they should be spoken, whether lots in a row should be spoken, and how to get them to stop speaking, but nothing about how to navigate them.

For example, if I have a bunch of links on a page, I can skip between them with k, v, u, etc. If there are buttons, I can use b and B. And so on.
But how does one do this with clickables? Sometimes you run into quite long lists of these, and it would be nice to move through them quickly, or to jump to them from another part of the page.

Frankly I'm surprised this has not been done already, but maybe there is some reason I can't think of. Or maybe it is being done and just isn't documented in an obvious way.

Is it possible to create custom braille tables for nvda

Hi all.
I don't own or have access to a braille display but I am trying to help some friends.
First of all sorry if this has been asked before.
As the subject says, I am wondering if we can modify a braille table for our needs.

For example, in modern Greek braille, if a letter is accented we add dot 5 in front of the Greek character.

But some people don't want to see it at all so I was wondering if we could change this.

As you can understand, this is a matter of preference. Some people want to see the accented letters and some not.
So probably the best solution would be to have 2 Greek tables. One with the accented letters and one without.
So what can I do about this?
Is it a liblouis issue or is it an nvda issue?
I hope somebody can help.
Thanks
Nikos

Hi folks,
has anyone else observed that sometimes NVDA reports the title of the
desktop as "Explorer" whereas at other times it states "Program
Manager?"
As an aside, I find that "Explorer" is often announced even when it is
inappropriate as something completely different has focus.
Best,
Felix

Yes this seems to happen a lot on windows 10, not seen it on 7, but have encountered unknown on 7 for no obvious reason so I'm thinking that the software is sending multiple events and depending on which is 'seen' you get different results.
