Re: Protonmail

Primarily, Shaun, because Google couldn't give a **** about you, your privacy, or your data. As long as they make money off of you, they're happy.

The advantage of ProtonMail is that you can actually encrypt your e-mails, so that unless someone has physical access to the device you are logged in on, or the device your recipient is receiving from, no one can intercept your message.

The bridge is usable, and you will only have to use it once. After that, you shouldn't have to open it again. It just allows your preferred client to access your ProtonMail account.

I will go on the record here stating that the interface on the web is fully accessible. The iOS app has certain... quirks, but can still be used once you know what you're dealing with.

From what I've seen, Proton Support is very responsive. We just have to figure out how to communicate with them the right way.

Re: Protonmail

Hmmm sounds like the bridge is a disgusting mess and not worth my time.
I wander if you could run without it in the first place.
I wander if the devs of this actually would help fixing their mess.
Then again, why should I use proton mail when gmail is actually more
accessible, in fact a lot of programs now at least newer ones support
the new security protocol google uses which makes them recognised as
secured apps.

Yes. I might be persuaded to see if my old twitter handle still works, just for this.

But that aside, I'm curious if you're able to get the bridge working, following my process. Hopefully in much less the time.

Re: Protonmail

Okay, this thread prompted me to finally get around to trying out the ProtonMail bridge, which you can only use with a paid account.

And, over two hours later, I can finally report on the results.

First, the bridge help documents are good, but really annoyingly designed, so you have to click next for each step. That said, the URL you'll want for that, is:
https://mail.protonmail.com/bridge

Install the bridge.

Run the bridge.

Choose OK in the dialog which opens. This dialog is weird: for me it didn't read or even focus automatically, but I was able to alt+tab to it, and read it with object nav. It just tells you to add an account, so it's safe to select OK.
After selecting OK, you are in a probably non-speaking window. Use object nav to move to the right (NVDA+numpad 6), until you reach "add account", and select it with NVDA+numpad enter.

You are then in a field for entering your ProtonMail email address. Enter it, press tab, and enter your password.
The instructions say you may also have to enter a second password, or 2FA code here.
Then press tab again twice, to "next", and press it.
Once again, nothing talks after this. You are hopefully in a window that says that you have successfully added your account, object nav again to the rescue.
You can probably choose OK or close here, either way you should return to the main window.

The instructions say to click on mailbox config, to learn how to connect. However there is no mailbox config evident on the main screen when tabbing around.
To find it, tab to your address, and again use object nav. Previous object says "expand row". I'm not sure if you need this, but I did it.
After that (assuming that was necessary), next object will give you options such as: switch to split address mode, and mail configuration.

If you are going to switch to split address mode, I suggest doing it before you set anything up in your mail program.

Here is where the most inaccessible part arises. Pressing mail configuration, which you need to do to get your access information, seems to only result in a "help balloon", which you can only get to with alt+tab, although actually you can't read it at all, even though it claims you have switched to it.
I tried everything I could think of to get there and read this, but could not.

It was after switching to Narrator, that I realized that Windows Defender was blocking features of the bridge. After allowing the bridge, I switched back to NVDA.

I still could not get object nav (or any other kind), to work in the window that was displaying (the mail configuration window).
However, by going back to the desktop, I was able to use object nav to go to the parent object, then the next object which was the window with my email address as its name.

After that, I next objected through the window menu (close, minimize, etc.), and then the next thing I knew I was hearing the host name (127.0.0.1), the IMAP port (1143), and all the other information! (SMTP port is 1025.)

Each element had its own copy to clipboard button. I thought the copy button would be especially useful for the password, but NVDA+C reported nothing copied.
Interestingly enough, however, I was able to use NVDA+F9 to mark start, review cursor right by character (numpad 3) to the end of the password, and then NVDA+F10 to mark end, and thereby copy the password to the clipboard.

The bridge requires starttls in your mail program, and runs on unusual ports, but otherwise uses normal SMTP and IMAP. They have help pages on configuring all of the common mail apps.

I could not find any way to get out of the Mail Configuration part of the bridge, other than by closing and restarting the bridge.

I hope this all helps someone.

Please, to anyone using ProtonMail, write to their support and ask them to improve the accessibility of the bridge!

Luke

No, you cannot read slides the teacher shows, at least I could not do it on any platform in zoom.

Good luck.

Windows 10 App Essentials 20.08, an important note for dev snapshot users #addonrelease

Hello all,

Windows 10 App Essentials 20.08 (fifth anniversary edition) is now available. Among many changes in this release (majority of which took place last week), the add-on now supports upcoming Windows 10 Version 20H2 and significant usability enhancements were made to modern input facility support (emoji panel, clipboard history, hardware input suggestions, dictation, and on newer feature updates, CJK IME candidate reading), the latter for braille users. It also includes Calculator improvements, Open With dialog fix is now available for Version 1909 users, and some workarounds for 20H2. As always, the new add-on release is available via community add-ons website and via Add-on Updater.

As for the subtitle: it’s been five years since the release of first test release of Windows 10 App Essentials in August 2015. The official release didn’t happen until December 2015, but for all record-keeping purposes, August 2015 (15.08 preview) is the first release.

A note on modern input facility support changes: modern input facility improvements came from an unlikely source: a speech presented by a blind high school student at this year’s National Federation of the Blind virtual convention, detailing her experiences as she and other blind high school students sued College Board over lack of Advanced Placement (AP) braille tests this year (perhaps I’ll describe the shock I felt while watching this speech and the follow-up actions taken in detail at another time); since modern input facility wasn’t quite optimized for braille users, this speech gave me the courage to revisit design decisions I made regarding emoji panel support three years ago and make extensive rewrites to improve user experience. Although emoji descriptions will not be brailed in human-readable languages (it only prints hexadecimal values unless Braille Extender is installed), WinTenApps 20.08 improves other aspects of emoji panel support, the most notable being that NVDA will no longer jump all over emoji panel when People emoji group is selected, which should make braille users more happy.

Several announcements:

  • Starting with version 20.08, Windows 10 App Essentials will now require NVDA 2020.1 or later.
  • Windows 10 App Essentials will end support for Windows 10 Version 1909 (November 2019 Update) in December.
  • If you are using development snapshots of this add-on, a series of really bleeding-edge builds will be released soon designed to test upcoming NVDA 2020.3 changes and add-on compatibility. As a result, these snapshots (dubbed “alpha”) will absolutely require NVDA 2020.3 alpha (or future beta) builds. If you do somehow install these snapshots while running NVDA 2020.1 or 2020.2, you’ll find that the add-on will not work properly as these bleeding-edge snapshots depend on changes made to NVDA that are going through alpha-level testing. If you are using stable add-on release, you won’t see this change until next year.

Enjoy.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: problem with search edit box in folders

Hi,
I think I know why this is happening. But just to verify, from File Explorer, press Control+E to focus to search field. Wait about ten seconds then press Control+NVDA+F1. If it says "searchui" or "searchapp", then yes, this is Windows Search interface, not File Explorer. I look forward to a day when I can sleep better at nights knowing that folks don't have to install Windows 10 App Essentials add-on to use many features.
Cheers,
Joseph

Very strange.
I can't really comment on the window not refreshing (I'm guessing visually the info is there but NVDA doesn't "see it" til you return to the window) But to me there doesn't seem a huge difference between pressing enter and down arrow.
Unfortunately I can't totally recall how things seemed to work before, but I seem to recall search populating as I was typing into the box.
So for example in my "films" folder I could start typing "holocaust" into the search box and after a few letters "cannibal holocaust" would be there, etc.

if i don't, folder list is not filtered, and sometimes i'm stuck in anempty window.

in previous windows version i only had to down arrow to display search results.

like in start menu.

Re: problem with search edit box in folders

Chris Mullins

Hi

Using the folder search box has not been something I have used very much because I can usually find the file I want by quickly typing the first 1, 2 or 3 letters of the file name whilst focused in the list view, and arrowing to the required file if it’s not the one moved to immediately.  When I saw this post, I had a dig around, first in the File, Options menu item available when in File Explorer.  Move to the View tab then arrow through the Advanced Settings treeview and there are a couple of settings related to searching.  Find the   entry entitled “When typing into Listview...”  and expand it.  There are 2 mutually exclusive options “Automatically type into the Search box”  and “ Select the typed item in the view”.

I set mine to “Select item in the View” to On which means the other option is off.  This allows me to access files as described above but I can also backtab from the listview into the search box type in my search criteria and then use down arrow to access the results.  I hadn’t much success with this in the past but I also checked out the Search category in the main Windows Settings dialog (Windows+I). In the “Searching Windows” sub-category, yu can set what you want to search (I chose Classic), index your folders and also troubleshoot indexing.  After I used the Advanced Search Indexing performance” link, searching using the Search Box in File Explorer became much easier.

Cheers

Chris

Just after a TB update I often can't get NVDA to read the list of folders.   However, if I shut down TB and bring it back up then NVDA reads them just fine so I think it is just a quirky thing with the updates.

The extension thing is separate from the update issue.

Hello Marco,

Sadly I haven't been able to access the code that is needed to run the bridge successfully. You may need sighted assistance if you can get it. Alternatively, I would try e-mailing ProtonMail support. Explain what a screenreader is and why you use it if you can, and maybe they can help you somehow.

Good luck.
