Date

Add-on Updater 20.06.2 coming this weekend, last version to support NVDA 2019.3 and a notice on legacy add-ons to be shown #addonrelease

Hi all,

Add-on Updater 20.06.2 is on its way, to be released either today or tomorrow (likely later today). This release includes two major changes:

  • Add-on Updater 20.06.2 is the last version to support NVDA 2019.3.1 or earlier. I should have done that as part of 20.06 but didn’t get a chance to do that (Add-on Updater supports latest stable NVDA release).
  • If you are still using Screen Curtain and/or Focus Highlight, after installing Add-on Updater 20.06.2, you’ll get a courtesy notice asking you to uninstall these add-ons. If you are using NVDA 2019.3 or later, these add-ons are no longer necessary as they are part of NVDA (as far as Add-on Updater and add-ons community sees them, they are legacy add-ons kept for older NVDA releases). This notice will be presented only once. If you are indeed using NVDA 2019.3 or later and wish to avoid this notice, please uninstall Screen Curtain and Focus Highlight. Also, to avoid confusion, automatic add-on update facility (not manual command) will be disabled until you restart NVDA.

Regarding the second item: whenever all features from an add-on is included in NVDA, a notice like this will show up in the future. This can only occur if the author of the would-be legacy add-on informs the community that the add-on is no longer needed. The notice itself will be sent out a few months after legacy declaration takes place, likely around the time the successor NVDA version is in circulation.

For example, suppose NVDA 2020.3 includes all features from Resource Monitor add-on (hypothetically speaking). If that ever happens (unlikely), I will declare it as a legacy add-on around the time NVDA 2020.3 stable version comes out. A few months later (around the time NVDA 2020.4 shows up), I’ll include a notice in Add-on Updater saying that Resource Monitor should be removed.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: SPL/NVDA

I would like to draw attention to a specific item from the Admin Notice, List Updates: Please Read  (Sent April 11, 2020):

  • Speaking of logs, we should avoid sending long logs to this list.
    • Logs may contain personal information to your system, your set-up, or possibly keystrokes you press, etc.
    • It is not expected that users on this list will know how to read logs, or that they will dissect those logs for you to determine the issue. Please reach out to NVAccess directly. No doubt there is already a process in place for this, however we shouldn't ask users to post logs to this list.

In the case of Add-Ons, reaching out to their respective developers, not NVAccess, is the appropriate first step.

Responded on NVDA-SPL list, but in case folks here are not members of that list: this is caused by track comments file becoming corrupted somehow. I’ll write a workaround at the cost of losing track comments.

Andy,

This particular group does not allow attachments.  You can try using the "Reply to Sender" link at the end of one of Greg's messages to send that attachment directly to him, and I believe this will work.  If you want to test that out, use the Reply to Sender link at the end of this message to send something, anything, to me as an attachment and I'll let you know whether it makes it or not.  I believe Groups.io strips only for on-group content when that's the chosen option, but not for private messaging.

Hi Greg,

Thank you for your response.

I have MathPlayer already installed; unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to make any difference. When I test these pages (in NVDA and JAWS across multiple browsers), I’m only hosting them on my local machine, not a web server. Non-chemistry MathML seems to display and be read fine by NVDA, at least in FireFox. But MathPlayer doesn’t seem to make any noticeable difference. Any advice on what I could change would be appreciated. Please see a demo sample attached as a ZIP to this email.

Hi Andy,

Do you have MathPlayer installed? NVDA uses MathPlayer to read MathML, and it generally reads chemical equations in an unambiguous understandable form although not necessarily the same way that a chemist might read it out loud. If you have MathPlayer installed, and it is not reading the subscripts, can you send an example of a webpage where it is not being read, and I can take a look.

NVDA Freezing/Crashing with Office 365 - Word and Outlook

Declan Meenagh

Hello everyone.

I am having some issues with Office 365 and NVDA.

I find that word randomly crashes, freezes NVDA and NVDA won’t talk until word is killed,

I am also finding that while running NVDA, if I switch to a different email account in outlook, it crashes.

Running windows 10 on a high spec computer.

I know someone else talked about this previously and I tried doing the online repair of office. It seems to make the word thing happen less, but the outlook thing is still happening.

I tried a fresh install of NVDA and disabling all ad-ons.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks
