Re: NVDA adding and changing settings

Chris Mullins

Hi

I have been using screen readers for years, though not WindowEyes, and cannot remember a time when i relied on a “document saved” message appearing.  When editing a document in Word or Notepad, Control+s is the shortcut to save your document without exiting from it.  Using this shortcut implies that you want to save your document contents at that point. If you then use alt+f4 to close the document, it will close.

If your document contains unsaved changes and you try to close it using Alt+f4, you will get a message asking if you want to save the document or not  .  At this point you have 3 choices:

you can press the ‘Save’ button – saves the document and closes it

You can press the ‘don’t Save’ button – Closes the document without saving it. **

You can press the ‘Cancel’ button – returns focus to the document which remains open.

** Word contains options to auto-save a document at timed intervals whilst editing.  If this feature is active, when choosing not to save, you may get a further choice to disregard all changes or only those made since a particular auto-save point.

So, in a nutshell, if you want to be asked if you want to save or not, don’t bother with Control+s, just press alt+f4.   If there are unsaved changes you will get the Save/Don’t Save dialog, if you haven’t changed anything the document will close.

Cheers

Chris

Hi Arlene,

Using Notepad in Win7 the control-s command saves my document. What I do not hear in NVDA is the question “do you want to save the document” and the statement “document saved.”

I use Window-Eyes and it tells me what I want and like to hear! I was doing some editing earlier this evening using NVDA and found other differences on the QBraille display I use. If and when it becomes necessary to only use NVDA it will take some getting used to on my Win10 PC since it does not use Window-Eyes. There are days when Grandpa DOS wishes he could go back to DOS again!

Thanks for your reply.

Re: Urgent help needed NVDA was not able to loa Microsoft SAPI 5

Hi,
The error message is
Synthesizer error
Could not load the sapi5 synthesizer.

I have tried:
1. restore NVDA default setting
2. reinstall some SAPI 5tts

And they failed.

Quentin Christensen 於 7/11/2019 15:27 寫道:

I wouldn't immediately jump to reinstalling Windows just yet.

Can you use eSpeak NG?  Also can you give us the exact error you get when you try to load a SAPI 5 synthesizer?  Have you installed, updated or uninstalled anything recently?

The log didn't make it through - they can't be sent to the list, but you can send it to me offlist at info@... if you like.

If it's a language issue, if you open NVDA's general settings (assuming you can still use any of NVDA?) can you set the language to English instead of default?  And if that works, it might be worth checking what your Windows language is set to just in case that has changed.

There is no relation between a registry cleaner and the NVDA utility.  Its purpose is very specific.  At times, doing something like uninstalling Microsoft office unregisters some entries that shouldn't be unregistered.  That makes NVDA unable to do a number of things that are necessary, such as work properly with many browsers.  All the registry tool does is reregister entries that are already in the registry that the uninstallation improperly unregistered.  It doesn't clean or remove anything.

It seems to me there is a bit of a knee jerk response to this.

If changing register should not be done why does nvda have a com register tool itself.

If you are going to use any software to clean register first manually back up your own registry

You can then restore it if all goes wrong.

I would first create a new user account with admin ability and test nvda in this situation, possible corrupted user profile.

If things are still not right try the nvda tools com reg tool.

I hope this mght help.

Instead of suggesting the most complex and dire explanation and solution as the thing to do, how about trying a system restore if a point is available before the problem began.  Others may have other solutions and it might be a good idea to wait before trying anything but that is one thing to try.

Weird.

Looks like a corrupted windows install.

Reinstall windows, run malware scans etc.

Updating sound drivers maybe to.

Of course it happened suddenly, that would suggest some sort of hardware
issue.

I had all sorts of issues with a business server because of a dead
wireless adaptor.

Thanks for all your answers.
Does anyone know how I can navigate through a list view? If I do it with narrator or NVDA I always navigate through columns but not through lines. it is very annoying when using Windows Explorer. I guess there must be a build in solution to do this. Otherwise I'm going to create a gesture for it.

I think the main issue might be that not as many touch gestures are pre-setup, however you can setup any gestures you like using NVDA's Input Gestures feature, particularly as the newer hardware running the latest Windows 10 might be able to distinguish different gestures.

I think if you can input a gesture that Narrator recognises, NVDA should be able to recognise it also - it might just be that we haven't set anything to activate to that gesture by default.

That is probably the main thing I would say - even if we defined more gestures by default, it would still be hard to try to come close to the number of commands you can give NVDA via the keyboard - certainly not as logically.  But that will be the same for any screen reader on any platform.

Grant! In my win 7 box, I had outlook 2010. I used NVDA for when I had to write a document in word. When I went to save it. NVDA did not ask you if you want to save the document. I can’t remember how I did it using it. I had to close NVDA down and get Jaws up. I had to save the document using jaws cause Jaws does ask you if you want to save your document. I told it yes. I don’t have word now that I have win ten. If I did. I’d retest NVDA and try to save a document using NVDA. I’d try to find how one does it.

I tried to help a friend install TW Blue today and we got stuck at the screen where we have to enter the twitter code. We clicked enter on ok after we typed the code but nothing happened, We tried control enter and we tried the space bar, but to no avail. Does anyone know what the problem could be?  We went through the process several times but we got stuck in the same place.

Regards,

Ibrahim

Hi all. I was wondering if there were other accessible twitter clients than TWBlue, which is what I've been using ever since Chicken Nugget lost a bunch of functionality a while back when twitter made changes. Today it simply refuses to run and I'm sick of screwing around with it to try and get it working. So any alternatives?
