I also use Code Factory Vocalizer, and I use Word 2013. The spell checker in Word is tricky, no matter what speech synthesizer you're using. You have to use object navigation. I hope this helps.

hi, i'm using the webcam c170
that cam works with no drivers needed.
it is plug and play and not plug and pray!
it works immediately, so if you use a program or app that nvda can handle, I do not see any problems.
I have no problems with it.
this series also has an excellent microphone and my friends say that I am fine to see.
and that's what I trust.

There may be technical reasons that this is advisable, but I'm concerned that if add-ons do need to be updated often, people will be discouraged from creating them.  How much work is involved in updating an add-on?  If not much, that's one thing, if a good deal, many people may not want to take on an open-ended commitment requiring updates often over a considerable period of time.

Hey Joseph,

thanks for forwarding this. However, then we should start working to adjust the add-on webpage so that the date of last update for an add-on is shown. The users could then decide much better if they install that add-on or not. But in my view this warning is a bit exagerated because some add-ons which are really useful are not regularly maintained by their original developers (i.e. audio theme 3d or even remote add-on where we see big delays in updating it). If NV Access really want to discourage users to use add-ons which are not updated regularly, then I think we should think about integrating useful functions into NVDA’s core. I mean functions from add-ons which are not maintained reliably. Because an add-on which is not maintained regularly does not mean that the add-on is not used by many users. Vocalizer for example is also not maintained regularly but, at least in Germany, about 60% of users use that add-on also at work. They would never change to eSpeak.

That’s why I think a survey worldwide would give us an orientation of which add-ons are used most often and whe can see which are regularly maintained and which not. After assessing the survey data NV Access can decide to overtake the add-ons which are abandoned or not updated for a very long time and integrate similar functions in NVDA.

But in long term we have to find a sustainable solution. Some statistics on the add-ons webpage would make this much easier (i.e. number of downloads for an add-on, last update and so on).

Hi,

No, please do not start learning a new language with a screen reader and a speech synthesizer. I advise starting out with a face-to-face conversation with someone who speaks the language you wish to learn.

StationPlaylist Studio add-on 18.12.1/18.09,5B hotfix posted #addonrelease

Hi all,

For users of StationPlaylist add-on: version 18.12.1/18.09.5B hotfix releases are up (18.09.5B is for LTS channel subscribers). This hotfix resolves most of the performance issues seen when using Voice Track Recorder.

Note: this hotfix release is the last version to support NVDA 2018.3 and earlier. Starting from January 2019, SPL add-on will require NVDA 2018.4. Also, this add-on is ready for future NVDA releases (more on that soon).

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: [nvda-translations] [nvda] FW: [Nvda-devel] Add-on compatibility in NVDA 2019.1 and beyond.

Hi,

The compatibility flag warning is a necessary stepping stone for two things that’ll have massive impact in our community: Python 3 and speech refactor. My position is that giving folks this warning early should let authors think about what to do and act accordingly.

As for incorporating some add-on features into NVDA Core: some might work, others won’t. At the moment my highest priority (besides studying for fall term finals and keeping an eye on Windows 10 updates) is Add-on Updater and incorporating that into NVDA.

As for NV Access taking over unmaintained add-ons: this depends on add-ons and surrounding copyright issues for some popular ones. For Vocalizer and friends, NV Access must reach out to Nuance about licensing and work with Code Factory and others regarding license transfer and what not. Unfortunately, there are speech synthesizers that won’t make the cut to Python 3 unless changes are made from authors, and it isn’t easy to contact authors for some to begin with.

As for advertising minimum and last tested NVDA versions for add-ons: I’d leave it up to authors to do this (both from manifest and on readme). Rest assured that my add-ons will ship with compatibility flags for future NVDA releases (both minimum and last tested versions defined and mentioned in the manifest and readme); this is the real reason for releasing version 18.12 of several of my add-ons: to prepare for what happened yesterday where compatibility flags are required. I’ll write up a more detailed announcement about compatibility flags for my add-ons later today.

Cheers,

Joseph

The only thing i have really noticed with it is when you go to delete a file a pop up comes up asking if you want to delete it from all devices or areas that is the file that you may be hosting there not the drop box one.

If you have recently updated (NVDA or anything else), try rebooting the
machine (particularly if it is a laptop that you don't usually shut down
and just close the lid on).

Otherwise:
1. Press NVDA+N to open the NVDA menu (the NVDA key will be either INSERT
or CAPS LOCK)
2. Press T for tools.
3. Choose "Run COM Registration fixing tool" and press ENTER.

That fixes a lot of these kind of problems.  Otherwise, are you running any
add-ons?  If you try restarting NVDA with add-ons disabled, does it still
occur?  To do that:
1. Press NVDA+q as if to quit NVDA
2. Down arrow to "Restart with add-ons disabled"
3. Press ENTER to restart NVDA with add-ons disabled.

Quentin.

1. Don't rely solely on your computer alone.

Re: Ask about learning a new language using screen reader.

Hi,
I can tell you one thing: a screen reader and synthesizer combination is not enough when it comes to learning a foreign language. This is more so for Chinese and Arabic where you need to study it hard and long. I myself didn't learn English through a computer (or through audio tapes) alone - I went through thousands of face-to-face conversations, along with dictionaries and immersing myself in English media (I am a native Korean speaker; what you hear in my tutorials is result of effort over the last twenty years or so).
When it comes to learning a foreign language, I recommend:
1. Don't rely solely on your computer alone.
2. Befriend someone who speaks the language(s) you wish to learn and have many face-to-face conversations.
Cheers,
Joseph

Dear Listers,
For now, NVDA is the only one screen reader that I use. I'd like to
learn a new language which will be start next year. I have questions,
but first of all, here are my plans and / or conditions.
- I don't have braille display, so I can only learn by listening any
materials and reading anything using screen reader.
- I'm using NVDA with Windows 7.
- For now, I'm deciding to choose between Chinese and Arabic.
Here are my questions:
- What are the best synthesizers for both languages, it can be paid or
free synthesizer that can use with NVDA.
- Is it hard to learn typing in both languages? I mean, keyboard
layout, special symbol etc.
- Any suggestions about learning both languages are welcome.
Thank you.

Hi,
Did Tiflotechnia ever update their voice list with the new voices such as Nathan, Susan, etc?

Re: Bluetooth Braille Displays Keep Dropping

Iván Novegil

A Spanish NVDA user has reported through the local mailing list a similar behavior, in this case with a Focus 40 Blue 5th Generation display connected both by USB and Bluetooth. I have the same braille display than him (firmware 5.81-40) on Windows 10 1803 with NVDA 2018.4beta3 and I am unable to reproduce your problem; in fact, if I switch off and on the display, without restarting NVDA during the process, it remains getting info from NVDA.

The only pattern I can see is the Windows version. I have just asked this user if he is using 1809 as well. I'm using 1803, and that may be the reason why I cannot reproduce this problem.

The displays used here are a Handy Tech Basic Braille and a Braille Sense QWERTY.
I'm not sure if this is a protocol problem, a windows problem, or an NVDA problem, and am unsure about how to debug it. When I set up the display(s) to connect via bluetooth, NVDA sees them for a while. Then, without warning, the connection to the display just disappears, and NVDA reverts to
No Braille
Would a NVDA log be helfpul in a situation like this?
I can go back into the settings dialog and set the display again, but then five to twenty minutes later, bang. Back to no braille again.

Re: Facing problam

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

Yes but some like my dropbox dialogues no longer reading it does not fix. Nobody seems to have any idea what is causing that though as I have said before I suspect the infestation with avast earlier in the year on both affected machines was to blame.

Quentin.
