Browse mode navigation by heading in large Word document does not always work
Rick
Hello NVDA users:
I have a large Word document (over 180 pages) which contains numerous annotations ()comments, insertions and deletions) and is well structured with nested headings. There are 9 chapters at heading level 2 and many subsections at heading levels 3, 4 and 5. In browse mode, I can navigate through the first set of chapters using the 2 key. Each of these chapters is only 5 to 10 pages in length. However, when I attempt to navigate to a chapter that is 60 pages beyond the current chapter, pressing the 2 key has no effect. I can successfully navigate to subsections of the large chapter using the 3, 4 or 5 keys.
How does NVDA navigate a document in browse mode, does it go line by line until it reaches the next intended object, or does it perform a search, using Word’s built-in API’s? If it searches line by line, perhaps I am experiencing the same issue related to a timeout in the elements dialog when too many annotations are present.
Thanks, Rick

OCR feature of NVDA seems to only work on visible portion of a graphic
Rick
Hello NVDA Group:
Earlie this week, I received an email, which I opened in the desktop version of Outlook 365, that contained a graphic of a screenshot full of text. With my laptop undocked, I performed OCR using NVDA+R on the graphic and read the contents. Later that day, with my laptop in a docking station, which is connected to a low resolution, large-screen monitor, I performed the same OCR function. Fewer lines of text were available, leading me to believe that the OCR is being performed on the visible portion of the graphic and not on the entire graphic itself.
As a blind user, I have no idea of how much of a graphic is visible, so if this is the case, I consider this a significant problem. Could someone please confirm whether my assumption is correct?
Thanks, Rick

Re: how to copy text using clip speak?
It depends what text it is, control c and v work for most things, if its a weird error you can not coppy, you can hit printscreen to get a screenshot for people, I have on occasion sent an audio recording of my reader and devs have handled it.

Re: NVDA and Outlook
Although this is the NVDA group, I wrote the following for JAWS, and the basic principles apply and I have to believe that the "JAWS to NVDA" translation is something most of the readership can do. I'll be happy to explain should that become necessary:
Another "for JAWS resource" for this can be found here: A Guide for Configuring Outlook with JAWS - hartgen.org
For keyboard shortcuts, see the Microsoft help page for Outlook. And, finally, from a tutorial I give to many of my students (and which repeats some of what's in the prior documents): Outlook e-mail client – This section is a work in progress Outlook is one of the oldest e-mail clients that’s ubiquitous in business settings. It is also very well supported by screen readers. Like most Microsoft programs, as versions come out they get more and more “bells and whistles” but the controls and shortcuts for core functions have been around since the beginning and will be the same no matter what version you happen to be using. Some initial tweaks that make Outlook easier to use with a screen reader: · Turn off the Reading Pane: ALT+V, PN, O · Turn off the To-Do Bar: ALT+V, B, O · Turn off message grouping. By default, Outlook groups messages in clusters based on when they arrived, e.g., Today, Yesterday, A Week Ago, etc. If you’d prefer to have this turned off use ALT+V, AB, W. That sequence is a toggle, so if you want it back on do the same thing. If you would prefer that JAWS not read the message subject again when you open a message and/or start reading the message body immediately: Press INS+V for Quick Settings, and move to and open "Reading Options". In there, adjust the following: a. Uncheck "Message Header Field With Message Announcement" b. Check "Messages Automatically Read"
Outlook 2016 Specific Features In Outlook 2016, there is a quick way to view your unread messages. These instructions presume that you have the reading pane turned OFF. From the message list, press Tab twice to locate the Unread button. Press the Spacebar on this button to show only the messages that are unread. To switch back to showing all messages, Tab to the All button and press the Spacebar to activate it. In any mailbox, whether Inbox, Sent Mail, or a Folder You’ve Created If you want to quick search for messages containing specific text: CTRL+E, fill in the search box with the word or words, hit Enter. Tab until you are in the “Shell Folder View, Message List” which will now show only messages that match the criteria. IMPORTANT: A search remains in effect until you clear it. To clear it, hit CTRL+E again to go to the search edit box, then hit ESCAPE.
To create a new folder 1. SHIFT+CTRL+E creates the folder and you will be in the edit box where you give it the name of your choosing. If you tab 2 times, you will end up in the correct position for Step 2. 2. In the tree view, navigate to the folder under which you wish the new folder to be created. If you want it on the same level as Inbox, Sent Mail, etc., then navigate to the entry just above Inbox that is announced as your e-mail address.

Microsoft's accessibility videos
I've been poking about the Microsoft accessibility YouTube channel, looking at all of their offerings, including their upcoming webinar, getting started with Narrator, 2019 edition. Here's upcoming talks. Lots of good playlists on the channel. They're captioning the onenote presentation now, but, honestly? You're missing out on some steller accessibility features in windows 10 if you don't have 10 yet. Below is the playlists I happen to like on their YouTube channel. Links are below. PDF accessibility training series. I honestly haven't looked at this yet, so unsure if it's for developers or consumers, but I always see PDF accessibility pop up on this list so wanted to share.. Accessibility
learning series. Aimed at consumers, this playlist
currently has the first getting started for narrator, some low
vision webinars that pertain to magnifier enhancements, tips and
tricks about working the smaller, web, ribbon, and, soon,
working with the new OneNote, that can also OCR images.

Re: wanted free voices
hurrikennyandopo ...
Hi
If you installed all of the voices and only wanted to keep the english ones the other voices can be uninstalled from program and features i think it is called in the control panel. You will need to go down the list and uninstall the voices you do not want.
If you want the english ones only you will need to note which ones they are.
Under the voice settings menu to get there press the ctrl key + nvda key + the letter V it should tell you what synth package you are using there. Tab down to change and change to speech platform.
When you have changed it then after that you can tab to voices then arrow down or up the list to see which ones they are.
I do not play with the languages as i only speak english and only use english voices.
I think also there is a add on called switch synth you can get from the add on web page that some use but not me.

Re: how to copy text using clip speak?
Robert Doc Wright godfearer
Is this clipspeak speaking of the addon? If so here is the information of its use:
Clipspeak is an addon that allows NVDA to automatically announce clipboard operations (such as cut, copy and paste), along with other common editing operations such as select all, undo and redo. In order to prevent announcement in inappropriate situations, Clipspeak performs checks on the control and the clipboard in order to make an informed decision as to whether such an announcement is necessary. Because of this, Clipspeak's announcements may be inaccurate. By default, Clipspeak's gestures are mapped to those commonly used by English versions of Windows, I.E.: • CTRL+A: Select all • CTRL+Z: Undo • CTRL+Y: Redo • CTRL+X: Cut • CTRL+C: Copy • CTRL+V: Paste If these are not the shortcuts commonly used for these tasks on your version of Windows, you will need to remap these gestures in the input gestures configuration under the Clipboard category.

Firstly which version of Goldwave and which version of the add on do you have installed. There was an update to the add on recently, but mine is still working with all the keys being announced here on the 32 bit version of Goldwave, the best for my purposes, the version ends in .65, which is more stable then 7, which I think was the last one built before going to the 64 bit version. Re: A very interesting problem: the use of Spyder outside the Anaconda, a few more questions and advice
Shasa,
I'm going to reach out to the contacts I have and ask them to take a look at this topic and reply to you privately. There seem to be a lot of "regulars" who are also Python coders, a number of whom work on NVDA itself and/or its add-ons. That being said, the subject of Python coding at the depth and breadth that your message indicates you want to pursue makes it off-topic for the NVDA list. I won't even suggest you take this to the chat group, as the scope of the discussion you want to have can only occur among seasoned Python coders. I am guessing that you will likely hear from said Python coders via Private Message or direct e-mail in response to this one. I am asking that the topic be closed for ongoing discussion on the NVDA group itself. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1809, Build 17763 Growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of the cancer cell. ~ Edward Abbey

A very interesting problem: the use of Spyder outside the Anaconda, a few more questions and advice
Shasa
Hi all,
I've been thinking about a problem for a long time. I couldn't solve this problem. I couldn't find a logical explanation. I have been interested in Python for 3 years. During this time, I searched for IDEs that can be used by the blind. For example VSCode, pycharm, Visual Studio ... The list is too long. I couldn't use any of the IDEs in this list. NVDA had problems communicating with IDEs. Then I wanted to make an introduction to machine learning and artificial intelligence. So I put Anaconda on my computer, which is the best solution What is this! The Spyder IDE was working well with NVDA. I am very happy. I especially liked the template feature. The ability to complete code is also great. Spyder is connected to the QT interface. QT works well in Anaconda. I installed Spyder in another version of Python. I wanted to work at Py2. Installation is smooth. And yes :-), that's the moment. NVDA works very well in anaconda deployment, while in another independent version of python, Spyder and NVDA are not communicating properly. I have questions. Both distributions are based on QT. However, while Anaconda deployment works well with NVDA, the packages installed from PyPI are not working properly. Py2-py3 does not notice. I tried these. Why is this caused by? In fact, Anaconda is a huge package. Some of the tools don't work for me. So I want to install an independent Spyder. I'm having problems when I set it up. These problems aren't in Anaconda. And there are several requests: What should be the code-writing environment for a blind? What are your IDE preferences? Experience sharing time :-) . I wanted to use VSCode. Very complicated, I got alerts and found it more than cool :-). Then it became unusable. I don't know what the last situation is. NodeJS applications are doing great studies in visual field. I think we can't catch them with NVDA. Modern web technologies will lead us to where we will be curious and watch.
