Hi a number of people on the nvda list myself included have had problems with putting the add on updater on installed copies of the latest beta of nvda. The eof error happens and its as if the add on is not there.
However I just set up a portable version of the same snap and it installs there with no issues, likewise on portable versions of alpha and the stable release of nvda.
Is there something different about an installed copy, or do we all have some kind of corruption that causes this effect. I've tried changing add ons around but the effect remains the same, so I'm reasonably sure its not an add on that is causing the issue, as now my alpha portable and the beta installed have exactly the same add ons and versions but the installed beta still has the error at start up or install and is thus not working.

They are talking about the add on for nvda called nvda remote which is directly for the purpose of interconnecting two computers with nvda on them.

It is better for both of you to connect to nvdaremote.com and choose
your pass key either manually or letting the server choose one.

OK since we do not know what the actual effect of this was other than a slugging of the nvda operation, and do not know hat it was, its a bit hard to comment, but that has never stopped me before!
Seriously, though, in case others do have this, it would be nice if you told the masses for anyone else in the future to learn from.

Re: How to configure Switch Synth?

Hi Diana,
If you use vocalizer expressive , just enable Detect text language based on unicode characters (experimental)  check box  in  Vocalizer Expressive  sub Menu  -> Automatic Language Switching Settings. Then set voices for English and Chinese ..

On Sun, Aug 12, 2018 at 5:16 PM, Diana Kwok <dkwok2017@...> wrote:

Hi Larry & Jacob,

Thanks for your instructions and patience.

Still no luck unfortunately. I do have Automatic-language-switching turned on. I tried to set-up 3 voices for 3 different slots. This works fine each time. However, after each voice set-up, everything is read out in that new voice and in English (including the desktop). Webpages in English are read by the new voice but no Chinese text on webpages in Chinese are read. It seems that only 1 voice is ‘active’ each time.

My Mum may have to do with NVDA reading in English only. Plus I live a long way away and have less than 48 hours left here…

Best wishes,

Diana.

Bear in mind that you will want to do something like activate a speech slot, then make changes to voice output settings, before then saving those settings for later use.

For example, I would press NVDA + ctrl + shift + 1, then use nvda + ctrl + s to bring up synthesizer dialogue, make a choice, and then use nvda + ctrl + v to bring up the voice settings, make a choice, and voice setting changes, and then hit nvda + ctrl + shift + v to save the current settings to the previously selected slot.

You would then repeat these steps, choosing a different slot each time, to have multiple switch synth combinations available/configured.

And, while it may suit some people, I will mention that one of the reasons I leave any form of automatic language switching turned off is since web developers don't always pay attention to what they should have set a web-page's underlying language to, and, that's one of the triggers that something like that would react to...<smile>

Stay well

Hi Diana,

Preferred settings means the synth settings you need to switch between. To configure speech settings, open NVDA menu and go to Preferences -> Settings... -> Speech. If your mum needs automatic switching between English and Mandarin ,try vocalizer expressive on https://vocalizer-nvda.com/

As for OCR ,add a Chinese keyboard layout in Windows language settings and Windows will download data for Chinese OCR and install it. It may take a few minutes.

BTW in Settings / Windows 10 OCR, the Recognition language is English but there’s an option for Chinese.

Hi Diana,

Is this addon enabled and loaded successfully? If so.

After pressing NVDA+Ctrl+Shift+3  if the slot is empty ,you will hear three. Then you can config a preferd setting.Press NVDA+Ctrl+Shift+V ,you will hear "Saved".Repeat this procedure on other slots  then  synth setting will be switched to corresponding slot after press certain hotkey.

Re: Keyboard With Extra Feature Keys

Quentin Christensen

Most keyboards with extra keys I've used tend to just work out of the box, particularly on Windows 10.  I must admit, I've never used the extra keys on my cheap logitech here, so I just tried and I can press the browser button to open my default browser, and email button to open email etc.

So those functions themselves work with or without NVDA or any other AT running.

NVDA has an "Input Gestures" feature on the Preferences menu, which can be used to configure keystrokes for NVDA functions.  I just tested and confirmed that yes, those keys can be reassigned with NVDA if needed (just like keys on a Braille display etc).

Regards

Quentin.

At work, I am using ZoomText with a ZoomText large-print keyboard. This keyboard has a row of feature keys above the standard function keys. These feature keys can be configured to access some ZoomText functions and to invoke other non-ZoomText hotkey patterns.  I love these feature keys because I can quickly access some frequently-used functions without having to memorize hotkey combinations.

At home, my PC is running NVDA 2018 on the latest version of Windows 10. I am interested in getting a keyboard withj additional keys . However, I have no idea whether the keyboard driver is compatible with NVDA. Are there any list members who are already using a keyboard with additional keys to directly access NVDA functions? If yes, please kindly let me know the brand and model.

Re: bug or not?

Quentin Christensen

The error seems to be occurring in the Advanced Touch Gestures add-on.  As Brian suggests, one of the first things to try is disabling either that addon or restart NVDA and disable all addons.  The other thing to try, is to see if there is a new version of the add-on.

To disable the addon only:
1. Press NVDA+n for the menu,
2. Press T for tools,
3. Press A for add-ons.
4. From the add-on manager, select the addon with the arrows,
5. then alt+d to disable
6. Press alt+c to close the dialog and restart NVDA.

To restart NVDA with ALL add-ons disabled, press NVDA+q, then down arrow to "Restart with Add-ons disabled" and press ENTER.  Once finished, restart NVDA again to restore the add-ons.

Quentin.

Keyboard With Extra Feature Keys

Desert Moon

Hello,

Thank you,

Do you think its wx4 perhaps the syntax is not supported in the older version?
When I looked at the code that failed it seems to be not watching for the error its actually seeing, but not knowing enough about the inner workings of python, I cannot really see how to make it work correctly. Joseph will have to do a fix.

Yes, I am getting the same results!
Updater works great with alpha snapshots, but not with beta!

I'm in the same position with it on the beta 2 version installed, yet alpha
snaps are working as portable and the add on is OK there. Look at the errors
I posted on the add ons list. It seems to be the eof error that is doing it.
I cannot see any difference between the add ons on both systems, so unless
the beta of nvda latest version is somehow different. I have had to turn it
off as all I get otherwise is an error on nvda start up and no menu option.
Could there be some remnant of something left that its seeing as a file it
needs to scan?

Hi,

Which NVDA version do you have? If it is 2018.2, chances are that it might
be something going wrong when the add-on starts, or somehow the
installation
has become corrupt.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi,

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling addon updater. I can't get the
check for updates option to show up at all.
