This is not strictly true, and can cause undue panic.  Those of us who use browsers that have, as their focus, privacy, ad blocking, and security above and beyond what "regular" browsers do experience certain websites that do not "play well" with them, and the most common ones that do misbehave are banking websites.  I have never bothered to deep dive into what's causing the conflict.  My partner's local bank simply will not let him log in using Brave; as soon as it appears you should be logged in you are immediately logged out.  But if we switch to Firefox or Edge, and both of which are using uBlock Origin, the login works fine.  

The two credit unions I use don't care.  But it's worth being aware that if you use a privacy/security focused browser, it can cause malfunctions with various websites at times, and failed logins are one of the most common malfunctions.  The site wants to do something the browser does not allow it to do, and the site just says, "thanks, but no thanks," and refuses to do anything further.

If you are having issues like this on an unprotected browser with no ad-blocking add-ons then I'd be way more concerned.

I have colleagues with a visual impairment who are also users of NVDA and would like to practice on a sample of such a question. I have approached Microsoft without success. They say that they cannot provide a sample even though I clearly do not need an actual live survey.

 

A marketing survey would be a possible option. In such a survey the questions can be treated as live without causing a problem to the survey owner such as a shopping survey.

There is no off setting in the combo box.  There is a setting that says something like when necessary.  That sounds like the setting that will use UI automation the least.

You don't have to worry about changing the setting.  It will either help matters or it won't.  You don't even have to go back into advanced settings to change it back.  If you haven't shut down and restarted NVDA, just use the command control NVDA key r to return to the previous setting.  It restores the saved configuration.

If you think the problem begain with a specific version of NVDA, the fastest and easiest way to find out if you can stop the problem by using an earlier version is to run an earlier version by selecting the run option when you run the installer.  It will run as though it were a portable version and you can test it with Word.

Someone else can tell you how to get the older version you want to test with.  They are all available.

then, if Word performs as you wish with that earlier version, create a portable version and use it whenever you want and the installed current version whenever you want.

Well in Windows 10, I've seen this quite a bit, but usually only on third party software. I don't know but its one reason why on this working everyday machine I have shunned Windows 10.

I do have it on a laptop, but regularly find settings have changed after an update like the views of files and folders and the security settings.

Yes, though for goodness sake do not have this enabled in a public place, since as has been stated, its a security risk. If you are in the bad habit of always using the same password, then expect to be hacked if you do!

I get this problem too, the other is that some forms are inconsistent as to where the button description is, or whether the ranking is high to low or the oteher way around or indeed if the button or description is first. Gets even worse when some are tables and others not. I think there is a lot of education needed for form designers.

ranking questions in surveys. I have, however, had issues with radio
buttons not being reported correctly. If I'm tabbing through a form

I just went and checked, though, and I'm back to only the voices for US English and Australian English.


Is there a way to stop Windows from removing these voices whenever I look away for too long?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for raising this and the interesting conversation around it.  Firstly, I would like to echo Joseph's point and share that we do definitely value each and every contributor, no matter what form that contribution may take: Code contributions, donations, reporting or investigating issues, telling others about NVDA, teaching others to use NVDA, liking or sharing our tweets and facebook posts etc etc.

When that contributors list was originally setup (it is available via the help menu in NVDA for anyone not sure where it is) - the intention was similar to the trend in other open source projects at the time - to thank those who helped the project, primarily through code contributions.

We have recently offered the opportunity for acknowledgement of donations via the various tiers in our GitHub Sponsorship.  While we hadn't anticipated people looking for donors in the contributors list, I can absolutely see where people could think of that.

This has also provoked discussion among the NV Access team around how to acknowledge contributors of all types, and how we might update the format or content of that document in future.  There will be various considerations in this, including the amount of work keeping it up to date, as well as ensuring that we don't publicly name people who wish to remain private,

So, no timeline for this, but watch this space.  Do please feel free to reply or let us know if you have ideas around how you'd like to see this proceed.  In the meantime, if anyone donates and would like some recognition, do let me know!

It runs into a maintenance problem for source code maintainers: locating authorship information for files and packages, made more complicated as some files in the NVDA source code repository have no copyright header whatsoever. Money is not the only way to help NV Access and NVDA. Simply promoting NVDA and the principles of this movement (equal access to technology) is valuable too. What's more, the fact that folks are using NVDA in unexpected places, coupled with its reputation as trying to follow accessibility standards contributes significantly to the promotion, reputation, and growth of NVDA and the movement it represents.

Let me repeat what I declared in 2016 as part of NVDACon then: NVDA is more than a screen reader - it is a movement. Money can surely help, and it is okay to tell folks publicly about it. But the "real stars" of this movement, people who sustains the movement toward equal access to technology, are those who open up opportunities for those who could not (surprisingly, it includes all users), and it will take far more than the length of the contributors document to list and some may wish to remain anonymous (willingly or due to circumstances beyond our control).
