I agree.
I had to reinstall NVDA after reinstalling Windows. Trying to navigate the website with Narrator was frustrating. I was so relieved once NVDA was up and running.

Narrator while better than what it was, really still feels like an afterthought. I mean, Microsoft has had ample opportunity to really develop a screen reader. Be it when they partnered with Window Eyes for like 5 minutes or only until recently paying more attention to Narrator itself.
Not to mention the fact that if they wanted to, they could've bought Window Eyes outright or Vispero at any time for that matter.
Not really bashing MS even. More like I'll believe Narrator to be a viable screen reading option when it actually becomes one. Right now, outside of perhaps getting a machine up and running out of the box or maybe to try to get out of the odd situation where your main screen reader craps out on you, it's not much more than that.

You know that everything has a life span. I hope NVDA still has a lot of years ahead of itself but maybe just maybe Narrator will become a great screen reader and there will be no need for NVDA or Jaws or any other screen reader.
Right now NVDA is my screen reader of choice with Jaws being my backup that I very seldom use.

Now don't get me started....
Braille Extender add on does this, but for some odd reason it has no key defined for it by default. Surely such an option needs to be in the core since there are a lot of users now, and getting more due to the cheaper displays, though of course I think most of the cheap ones at the moment are only 6 dot.

My request is that NVDA have a way to turn off dots 7 and 8.

In standard brf files, such as those from the BARD website of the U.S. National Library service, all letters and some
additional symbolls are in upper case. I have BraileExtender and can switch between English U.S. Grade 2 and English
U.S. 6 dot computer Braille. But the latter is not 6 dot. Dot seven sticks up almost continually, making
reading unpleasant. We need a way to tell NVDA that all letters and symbolls are 6 dot.

Hello:
I am having problems with my NVDA screen reader.
The screen reader is just too slow when I am browsing the internet.
When I am doing some other work like word processing or reading documents off line, it is not slow.
This problem has nothing to do with the websites, as I don't have this slow problems online with JAWS. I use a demo copy of JAWS.
Secondly, when I visit a website, or even some times when I launch a web browser like internet explorer or firefox, I hear "internet explorer unknown" or "firefox unknown" and the screen goes quiet, and when I press the arrow down key, that is what I keep hearing. Some times, when I am on a site, or trying to open a site, the screen reader crashes, and disables the computer itself. I just have to shut it down, and then restart it all over again.
Does anyone understand the problem I am having with my NVDA screen reader?
I use windows7 32 bit on a laptop.
I have the latest update of the screen reader.
Hope to read a helpful response.

Its the versions that are the thing here, it will be exploder 11, and probably firefox 52 or later as Chrome will be fine, which is why I did not suggest the com fix tool.

I wonder when the disc was defragged and how big it is. Classic symptoms of running out of virtual memory.

Re: Problems With NVDA

Yes which was why I asked about the hardware. The fact that its 32 bit version would make me suspect that its say, a core duo machine with maybe less than 4 gig of ram?

A slow hard disc too.

People say that Chrome is better on such machines, but if not then an older, say pre version 52 version off Firefox. I usually test it on version 45, often runs amazingly faster.

If the machine is a single core machine then all bets are off. its like waiting for paint to dry with today's javascript infested web sites.

that have already been answered in the original post doesn't help
anyone, it just adds unnecessary clutter to the list. Normally, I'd not
say anything about this, but I've seen a rather large increase in this
kind of behavior over the last couple months. It's almost like people
are reading support scripts like when you call a help line, and the
person on the other end of the line goes through their list of
questions, regardless of what you told them when they answered the
phone. Can we at least make an attempt to read messages before replying
with questions that are already answered in the email to which we're
replying? I think it would make everyone a lot happier.

Actually it isn't. Sometimes if you minimise everything, it simply lands focus in nowhere land, this is when the desktop key appears not to work.

But Windows and D is designed to focus you on the desktop and it does.

Well what is there left if you minimise everything? Also what is left if you switch to desktop?
In a way its another way to do the same thing. In both cases nothing running is closed just the desktop put on top and in focus. However as has been pointed out if you are in tablet mode the desktop is effectively changed so you use things by the touch screen on a tablet and I have no idea if that stops the keyboard from doing things and it certainly does semi disable the desktop view in some instances. This only affects windows 8 and
10 though.

Well it is as long as nvda has not managed to pretend another key is pressed down. I've noticed a similar issue with Jaws as well at times. I am wondering why, but I doubt anyone really knows, but obviously it has to do with low level code looking at the keyboard.

I'll just reiterate what Brad has already mentioned, that there is a very thin, almost invisible button at the far right of the taskbar, to the right of the clock/calendar, that NVDA announces as "Show Desktop" but ONLY if you mouse hover over it. I cannot get to it by using WinKey+B and right arrowing.

It's interesting, but most sighted users get back to the desktop using what has to be the slowest and least elegant way: minimizing their open windows one by one. It's not that everyone does this, but I see it far more often than using WinKey+D, WinKey+M, or the Show Desktop button. Point and click is not always anywhere near to the quickest or easiest way to accomplish something, but it's the one thing that every sighted Windows user knows and knows very, very well. Those of us who are old school, meaning having used Windows since there was a Windows, often know more keyboard shortcuts, but even then that's not reliably so.

This only affects windows 8 and 10 though.

Windows+M will minimize all the windows? Really?
I've always had the Windows+M as a way to access the desktop easily.
Anyone can confirm this?

Windows + letter M is a windows command. It will minimize all windows
that are open in front of you to the task bar.

Use the Windows key + letter D to jump to the desk top.

In some cases you might have to do it 2 times but in most cases only
the once from any where on the desktop, task bar etc.

Can you not just tab around in a circle?

Maybe you have a customised version of the start menu. Another thing I do often find is that the system tray has an intel item in it that if it gains focus cannot be gotten rid of. I dealt with this by hiding that icon in the hidden section.

Hi friends,
I tried all your suggestions but the problem still persists.
Interestingly, after I restart nvda, I see a back button that nvda
announces right next to the start button. As soon as I press that
button, the start window opens and I again lose access to the desktop.
Any thoughts?

Manoj

Well it is as long as nvda has not managed to pretend another key is pressed down. I've noticed a similar issue with Jaws as well at times. I am wondering why, but I doubt anyone really knows, but obviously it has to do with low level code looking at the keyboard.

Or you could use Windows D, which is more reliable. M just means Minimise everything, whereas D takes you to the Desktop.

Its a windows key combination which may mean you have an issue where sticky keys comes on and confuses stuff. I'd start there and then think about nvda later on. This is where a portable version of nvda can be very handy. If you suspect its nvda getting involved, simply close the installed copy and open up the portable one and see if the problem goes away.

Sometimes it works that way too., As I say this is a criticism of combo box behaviour and design. I keep forgetting which technique works on which boxes. I place the blame for this squarely on the web designer who cannot be consistent for keybord or even touch users.

The standard way of opening combo boxes is alt + down arrow. On some combo boxes if you hear your screen reader go into edit mode, you can just use the up or down arrows, but if doesn't work use alt + down arrow to open and alt + up arrow to close.
