Re: apostrophe pronunciation

Perhaps someone can discuss if there is a technical reason why there
isn't a restore defaults button or, perhaps better, a button that
will restore the selected item to its default. There may be times
when people don't want to lose everything but want to try changing
one setting.

I want to share a picture. How do I do that? I have the pic I want and can get to where I can share. Then I get stuck.

There is no restore defaults button in the dialog. Someone may tell
you how to manually change the settings by saying what the defaults
should be, if you aren't sure.

I don't know if there is a way to restore defaults, perhaps by making a portable copy from the exe file, then copying files concerning the dialog you are working with. Someone may furnish instructions. Gene On 8/17/2022 7:10 AM, Brian Williams

Thanks for your advice. Worked wonders. I have successfully changed the pronunciation of tick and it now pronounces apostrophe. However I am not having the same success with bang. I want to replace it with exclamation. I have followed the same procedure as apostrophe but oddly no success. Thanks again Brian

NVDA doesn't have a restore defaults button in that dialog, but this will work: 1. Find your user configuration directory. If you're using an installed version of NVDA, Pressing Windows+r and typing %appdata%\nvda should put you there. 2. Delete symbols-en.dic. 3. Restart NVDA.

apostrophe pronunciation

Hi all, After installation NVDA on my new laptop and changing some of the setting I have hit a problem and can’t work out what I’ve done or how to undo it. When writing text into a document and insert an apostrophe NVDA pronounces the word and the letter at the end separately. For example, haven’t is pron=unced haven t, or couldn’t is pronounced couldn t. any advice would be gratefully received. Many thanks Brian |

It would be different on portable to installed versions though.

I think in the main one sees some storing them in the main folders in the users roaming folders, but of course for portable being wide open for all its going to be somewhere in the add ons folelder. Such a change now, however would immediately mean all add ons would need a rewrite to accommodate the new rules. Brian -- bglists@... We all know that the power of NVDA screen reader comes from many add-ons which are provided by developers of NVDA and by community. But when you have many add-ons installed finding settings for particular add-on becomes a real pain because we never know excatly where to look for them. So, may be we, as a community, should ask NVDA developers to provide a single place where all third party add-on should install their parameters. It may be, for example, "Add-on Settings" option under NVDA options sub menu. Just wonder what others think about it? WBR, Sergei. |

Hi Louise
The closest I think might be the golden cursor which can be found at https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/goldenCursor.en.html . I think that one does it like a hot spot?
there is another add on called Object Enhancer which can be gotten from my drop box at https://www.dropbox.com/s/drmx32drvwuetwq/objEnhancer_2022.3_Gen.nvda-addon?dl=1 The second one will also work on 2022.2

You don’t need to uninstall, but deactivate your licence before you install the new one, just in case it gets lost.

Hello Quentin and Steve,
Thank you for that information, I have downloaded the program and am ready to install, do I need to uninstall my license key before installing the new version? will the new version install over the old one? in other words, do I* need to uninstal the old version before installing the new one?
Thank you for your help with all this, I am most grateful.
Best Regards, Jim.

Hi all, IMPORTANT: shortly after August 18, 2022 at 00:00 UTC (5 PM Pacific on August 17, 2022), Add-on Updater will not offer updates to itself and Windows App Essentials if you are not running NVDA 2022.2. This is in preparation for requiring the aforementioned NVDA release from the next stable versions of these add-ons (late August). Cheers, Joseph |

Hi, Good question. I'd be curious to know if upcoming Windows 11 Version 22H2 resolves this as I know that Microsoft engineers, screen reader developers, and third-party engineers have worked together on some issues (mostly screen reader developers informing Microsoft about specific issues, with Microsoft engineers writing fixes and releasing them as part of Windows Insider Preview builds). This will take a thread to explain as I may need to dig into communication between NVDA contributors, Windows Terminal developers, and other engineers. Cheers, Joseph |
