NVDA Startup
Howard Traxler
After installation, NVDA won't start. Wondering, does starting depend on the desktop shortcut? If so, I don't understand the command shown in the shortcut properties:
C:\Program Files (x86)\NVDA\nvda_slave.exe" launchNVDA -r Maybe by changing this start command I can make it start normally? Your thoughts? Thanks. Howard

The pinyin method is actually the method I use. It works this way when

using NVDA: type the string you want, nihao for example, to say hello. When the list of homophones comes up, use the arrow keys to move between choices for that string. Use object navigation to find out which character is in which description. Press numpad 2 twice to get a description. this of course requires you to learn a bit more about which character means, and enough mandarin to learn the descriptions. Use numpad 1 and 3 to move to the previous or next characters, respectively. Hope this helps. Clement

Dear list,
I’m part of an intensive Mandarin course in Germany at the moment. In about a week it will be mandatory for me being able to write simplified characters on a laptop (Windows 10, NVDA 2021.4, using IBM-TTS).
Many sighted people use a Pinyin based input method in which they type in the pinyin and are shown homophone characters of which they visually select the right one. Obviously, this method isn’t exactly accessible.

I found that reader mode doesn’t always strip out all of these ads, and as others have noted, reader mode isn’t even a readily available option in chrome, though it can be accessed. I find that hitting comma usually gets me out of ad frames. Sometimes there will be a couple frames stacked on top of one another, so you might have to hit, comma a couple times. It’s annoying. Going into old timer mode here for a minute, I remember in the 90s before the Internet was completely monetized and corporatized. The good old days…

when I am looking at the messages list says "You are currently on-line." from within reading mail it says "no status bar."does in t-bird 102.1.2.

Hi,
When I used SPSS I found the experience both with Jaws and NVDA to be horrible. I was able to perform the basic important tasks such as reading the p values for whatever test you had to run such as Z test, but I had to get sighted assistance to simply get Jaws to read the two views after some work that the assistive technology instructor at my university did on their end. I will see if I can find the instructions on how to set up SPSS to work with Jaws because that is the only program that worked with SPSS. In closing my advice would be to work with your professor and explain that this software is nearly inaccessible with my screen reader. I wish you the best.

Hi. I couldn't use SPSS nearly twenty years ago with JAWS for a university statistics course, and I wasn't an NVDA user at the time. I recall a discussion on this list about this, but I don't believe the alternative to the GUI was mentioned. I wish I'd known about it. I never used NVIVO.

I get a lot of messages, though not nearly as many as you. I usually read them all or most of them because I'm curious and I would wonder if I had missed anything interesting if I skipped some. There are, of course, things I'm not interested in and I may skip. Since I don't want to skip most messages, I haven't used methods for managing high volumes of messages. There are certainly ways of doing so. One method I know about and that some people may like is that Groups.io allows you to receive the first message in any thread and then, I'm not sure how, you have to tell Groups.io that you want to receive the rest of the messages sent in that thread. This is related to your discussion. I often see people asking about something that has been discussed within the last week or two. I think it is a good idea for people who don't want to read a lot of mail from various Groups.io lists to use this system. That way, if they check their messages daily, they would enormously cut down the number of messages they get and at the same time, know if threads they are interested in are starting. of course, topics often drift from the original topic and the thread continues so this system will cause you to possibly miss discussions of that sort you would be interested in but it would allow people to know about many discussions they might miss if they don't follow the list much because of the high volume of messages on a particular list. I'm sorry about sounding a bit coarse, but I am on a lot of lists. I enjoy learning new things. Obviously on heavy traffic lists, I don't read every message. But using my method of grouping and filtering, I can literally get between 1000 and 2000 messages daily and spend between an hour and an hour and a half total in going through them. Now i don't know how many times, I have gotten e-mails to heavy traffic lists from people who say things like: "hasn't this thread gone on long enough" or "moderators please close this topic." When I contact them, I find out that they have all their messages going into the inbox and don't know or could care less about filtering and grouping. I guess what I'm saying is that people who won't/can't learn about such things should be on heavy traffic list or if they are they shouldn't complain about the heavy traffic. ...And before, I get booted from this list, let me say that's about all I have to say about this topic--since it definitely isn't about NVDA. Solution for NVDA Remote on the IPhone with Bluetooth keyboard lacking NVDA key.

Hi, I accidentally paired my Matias keyboard with my phone as if it was a Windows or Android device, and low and behold all those Windows keys that the IPhone doesn't care about and don't work in apple mode like NVDA and applications actually go through to the phone and can control your NVDA on your Windows machine. Now I need to see if I can trick the IPhone into letting me pair the keyboard twice, once in Windows mode on key 4 and once in Apple mode on key 2. Probably not, and I'm not going to try it now, but one of these days. My Bluetooth on the PC bit the dust, and in trying to fix that connection I accidentally unpaired the keyboard with the phone, and then accidentally paired it again using the wrong key so that the keyboard thought the phone was a Windows or Android device.

you are probably one of those who complains about too many message and too high a traffic on lists you are on. I never complain about this because of my tried and true method of filtering/grouping.
