I'm extremely skeptical of that. Nothing has been installed yet. Speech occurs when installation has failed. And as I understand it, NVDA is in memory and can work even if the files on the drive have been decoupled.

I consider this extremely unlikely and I consider advising turning UAC off to be very bad advice. UAC isn't nearly as effective as it might be because malware writers have found ways around it. But it does help at times in preventing malware from being installed. It is not reasonable to advise turning it off when all that is needed is to listen for the sound, then issue the command alt y. Consider the amount of time in doing that compared with the amount of time removing an infection it might have prevented.

The problem is, Janet that you often have a catch 22 issue in this sort of
case. NVDA doing a full update has probably decoupled all the old files and
so there is no screenreader to read it, hence the noise. I know its not
advisable according to many here, but if you are careful what you install
and only you uses the machine, turn uac off completely. It will complain
about it at first but life is a lot simpler with it gone!

I was just thinking this last night reading this thread. Do you have your UAC level set to 0? If so you won’t hear nothing. I am the only dude who uses my PC, but I still use UAC but my level is set at the default.

That is really unusual. You should definitely get a UAC dialog when trying to install any program. Actually, unless you are logging in to Windows as an administrator? But in that case, the process would already have the privileges it needs and shouldn't fail.

What's more, even though Windows 10 users can add emoji by accessing the appropriate panel there, the emoji panel doesn't exist in older versions of Windows, and users of Windows 7 or 8 might also want to use those old emoticons I've already mentioned. Given that Windows 10 isn't used by all NVDA users, and people may still want to read and add old-fashioned emoticons as well as more modern emoji, there are still good reasons for the Emoticons add-on for NVDA to continue to exist, in my opinion. So please don't scrap it yet!

Several other things spring to mind. There has been a lot of talk that  the emoticons are in the core now, so do you need the add on at all? also I'm totally confused about the state of the win 10 essentials as it seems there are now strict limits to which versions of windows 10 work with which versions of the add on.
 Might it be that windows 10s version is incompatible with the add ons being used in some way?

to install: in my case there was an error with the installation of that 
add-on’s update when I used the add-on updater to do it. But the Emoticons 
add-on installed normally when I downloaded it from the website and did the 
installation by opening the add-on from where it got downloaded to.

By the way, I couldn’t download NVDA 2018.4 using Check For Updates the 
other day either, once again I actually had to download the ;exe file to 
update NVDA, so I wonder if there is some gproblem with NVDA updates 
generally, either the program itself or add-ons.

Hi,
Emoticons versus emojis: they are two different things. The Emoticons add-on comes with definitions of some popular emoticons and emojis, but they are tiny compared to what NVDA can read now in 2018.4.
Windows 10 App Essentials policy: supporting more recent Windows 10 release is by design due to introduction of Windows as a Service (keeping oneself updated from time to time). I also do require more recent Windows 10 releases for more recent add-on releases in order to reduce complexity.
The log provided has nothing to do with which release WinTenApps add-on will run on; rather, it deals with failed file deletion and rename operations.

There has been a lot of talk that  the emoticons are in the core now, so do you need the add on at all? also I'm totally confused about the state of the win 10 essentials as it seems there are now strict limits to which versions of windows 10 work with which versions of the add on.
 Might it be that windows 10s version is incompatible with the add ons being used in some way?

Just to clarify this is the pound sign, which of course is only spoken in the previous email if you ar cursoring through it or indeed using speech player in Espeak as the synth not espeak nG.

Hi, While proof reading some documents in Word today using the latest nvda and its inbuilt Espeak NG I encountered an issue. although it can speak the £ sign when cursoring through a line, it will not say it when reading lines or in say all. However installing  Speach player in Espeak fixes the problem. Can somebody sort this out?
I could send a message to Espeak group, or raise an issue on nvda, but I suspect this is an Espeak issue and as such might be better if somebody who is an NVDA developer approached the Espeak team, as it is probably just a small issue.

I have loads including the very important application dictionary, toolbar explorer fake copy announcement  remote, open link with,  Extended  Winamp and dropbox to name but a few.
I do hope some third party can make these checked so they continue to work as they are very useful add ons for nvda. Of course in my view application dictionary and toolbar explorer should be part of core nvda in my thinking.

Hi,

In case of Emoticons add-on, it might be that something is holding onto manifest file somehow, thus preventing package deletion.

As for config file error: might be caused by nvda.ini becoming corrupt.

In both cases, I advise:

Log off the computer (not restart).
Log back in.
Download and install the add-ons in question manually.

That may be what is supposed to occur, but time after time it goes mute and does not use the built in secure screen reader. Its not just that its opened behind either, even alt tabbing will not reveal it. I guess putting narrator on before an install may work, I've never tried it. Its my feeling that in some circumstances the cut down bit of nvda which is supposed to run in this situation cannot read the screen unless its actually in focus and for some reason alt tabbing never actually achieves this, at least from my experience.

Re the dialog not reading properly - it should read ok, however it uses a
different NVDA profile.  To have it read in the voice you prefer:
1) Setup NVDA as you like (synthesizer, rate, etc)
2) Press NVDA+CONTROL+C to save changes.
3) Press NVDA+CONTROL+G to open the general settings.
4) Press TAB until the focus is on the "Use currently saved settings on the
logon and other secure screens" button
5) Press SPACEBAR or ENTER to activate the button.
6) If you have any add-ons, a dialog appears warning that these can be a
security risk (not that there is a risk from any specific add-ons, just a
general warning).  Press ENTER to accept this.
7) A UAC dialog appears.  press ALT+Y accept the prompt.

The problem is, Janet that you often have a catch 22 issue in this sort of case. NVDA doing a full update has probably decoupled all the old files and so there is no screenreader to read it, hence the noise. I know its not advisable according to many here, but if you are careful what you install and only you uses the machine, turn uac off completely. It will complain about it at first but life is a lot simpler with it gone!

I do not think this is the problem here, it sounds to me more like a weird impossible to write to a folder issue. Maybe an existing file is locked permanently due to a bad shutdown. There are some unlock programs around that can sort this sort of issue out.

I have had this scenario on a system that failed due to a powercut during antimalware scan and updates.

You need to remove and reinstall the sound drivers though they may be corrupted.

Next make a new account, copy in all your data, and delete the old profile because its corrupted.

A small note, if windows frequently does this it could be corrupted.

If that is the case, reformat and it will go away.

But if it continues to do this every so often, and even if it doesn't I would strongly recomend people to get a ups, now I realise ups devices and their power cells are expensive and that some of their software may not be the best, access wize but that should at least save your bacon, this home network has 2 ups devices

One of them is quite old and we have a newer one on the workstation.

In addition, due to a server upgrade at my dad's work we have recieved an old one which we have serviced but not put anywhere, so that may replace the oldest box.

Make sure you have serge boxes, for all electronics.

Now I had a similar issue with virtual recorder after a windows update. I had to uninstall it and reinstall it again and it then functioned. It would not be the first time a windows update has altered a file modified by another program and made it non functional.

How are you trying to open it?

Are your file associations set to VlC?

What happens when you open it using the search box or run dialog?

If you've tried everything and there's simply no VLC window opening, it may
be time to re-install. There's nothing special related to starting VlC; it
should open like any other programme.

Problems with english £ sign in Espeak NG in laatest release

Hi, While proof reading some documents in Word today using the latest nvda and its inbuilt Espeak NG I encountered an issue. although it can speak the £ sign when cursoring through a line, it will not say it when reading lines or in say all. However installing  Speach player in Espeak fixes the problem. Can somebody sort this out?
I could send a message to Espeak group, or raise an issue on nvda, but I suspect this is an Espeak issue and as such might be better if somebody who is an NVDA developer approached the Espeak team, as it is probably just a small issue.

I think that isn't a problem.
In voice setting dialog by default the level of symbols is "Some", and the level for each emoji in the dialog Punctuation/symbol pronunciation is "Some".
You can customize these levels as you prefer, but by default NVDA reads emojis as expected.

Hello. I managed to solve the problem. In the NVDA menu, a submenu of
Preferences, there is the item "Punctuation/symbol pronunciation...".
This dialog box has all the smilies. You need to select the desired
emoticon and the "Nothing" level and save the changes. In this case,
the emoticon will be read correctly. This should be done for each
emoticon, which, unfortunately, is not very convenient. And you need
to make changes for each language. I hope these problems will be fixed
in the next updates.

probabily you are using "None" as level for Punctuation/symbol
pronunciation.
Raise the level to "Some" or more with nvda+P then try to read emoji.

Make sure that the checkbox "Include Unicode Consortium data" in the
voice setting dialog is enabled.

obviously, the emoji dictionaries from espeak.ng aren't available on
NVDA 2018.4.

Hi!

I also had the problem that the new version of the Emoticons add-on failed to install: in my case there was an error with the installation of that add-on’s update when I used the add-on updater to do it. But the Emoticons add-on installed normally when I downloaded it from the website and did the installation by opening the add-on from where it got downloaded to.

By the way, I couldn’t download NVDA 2018.4 using Check For Updates the other day either, once again I actually had to download the ;exe file to update NVDA, so I wonder if there is some gproblem with NVDA updates generally, either the program itself or add-ons.

Hello. I managed to solve the problem. In the NVDA menu, a submenu of
Preferences, there is the item "Punctuation/symbol pronunciation...".
This dialog box has all the smilies. You need to select the desired
emoticon and the "Nothing" level and save the changes. In this case,
the emoticon will be read correctly. This should be done for each
emoticon, which, unfortunately, is not very convenient. And you need
to make changes for each language. I hope these problems will be fixed
in the next updates.

Read back code in python shell

Hi I’m supporting students and want to introduce them to writing code using python. I have downloaded python 3.7 and it reads what I type into the shell but when I press enter it does not read. Nor will it read back anything else in the shell.
Can anyone please tell me how I can make it read back when in the shell, thanks
