Re: reading mail in outlook 365
Quentin Christensen
Since this is the second email in a row to ask a similar question, I'm curious, why do people read pieces of text that may be long, using the arrow keys rather than Say All (NVDA+down arrow or NVDA+a depending on your setup)? Note that I'm not saying you SHOULD do it one way or the other, just wanting a better understanding of why people do things the way they do. For me, I use Say All with a finger ready on SHIFT to pause speech as needed. You can force Outlook to open emails as plain text rather than HTML (File menu, options, Trust centre, Email security, read all standard email in plain text), however, that displays links to external images as links and reads out the full link of each, rather than the HTML view which simply denotes "graphic". Regards Quentin.

However, emails with NVDA and Outlook 365 didn't read as well as they do with Thunderbird and NVDA. For example, it appears that using arrow keys in some emails in Outlook 365 is not a great solution. All you see is blank lines and graphics, whereas you see links and a fairly compact view in Thunderbird. The tab key doesn't change this in any way, shape or form. --

Hey Travis, I'd forgotten about portable ff! Thanks for the reminder!
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Indeed, that worked. So I decided to paw thru what few FF addons I had installed, & of course it had to be my favorite screen capture tool! @#$%! So something in the last update of ff proved incompatible w/Nimbus Screen Capture. O, well--I can just as easily use Screen Grab, I guess. I sure hate it like bloody double-hockey-stick when that happens, though. Man all these addons can really cause problems when they want to! Thanks again for the reminder about portable ff. & editing w/ff will be a lot easier again. That's particularly true as I use GMail on the web & not an email client. That was getting tedious, & past time to get fixed.

Abbie,
You're quite welcome. That's what venues like this are supposed to be about: helping one another (even if that, at times, is done with a dope slap. Luckily unnecessary here!) -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1803, Build 17134 The psychology of adultery has been falsified by conventional morals, which assume, in monogamous countries, that attraction to one person cannot co-exist with a serious affection for another. Update on Amazon Kindle Site with NVDA
Abbie Taylor
I just now tried to purchase another Kindle book from the Amazon site. When I couldn't find the button to buy with one click with NVDA, not even with object navigation, I switched to System Access, and sure enough, there was the button, and I was able to successfully complete the purchase without having to call Amazon's disability customer service.
It sounds to me, then, that the issue here may be with NVDA, although folks who use Jaws or Narrator could possibly try the site to see if they can find that elusive button. I wonder if there is something NVDA developers can do to allow the program to read these buttons. Surely there are other such buttons on other sites that NVDA won't read, even with object navigation, but that are easily recognized by other programs. Not all screen readers are created equal. This is just an idea for what it's worth. -- Abbie Johnson Taylor, Author http://abbiescorner.wordpress.com http://www.abbiejohnsontaylor.com abbietaylor945@... Re: Best blogging software for use with NVDA
If you've got a self-hosted site, then WordPress is an excellent choice. It's very accessible from my experience. I've used the .com version of WordPress to create my own personal blog, and I'm loving it.
With a self-hosted WordPress installation, you can install your own plugins and themes. Heck, you can even turn it into a website, complete with a blog and a forum.

Hi Jackie,

Here's one thing I thought of trying. This should tell us if your Firefox update might have corrupted things somehow. Grab the portable version of Firefox: https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable It's version 62.0.2, the latest right now, and choose where you want it on your computer. When done, open it up and see if you can select text normally, or if you're still having trouble. If things are normal, your desktop installation may have corrupted, and you might have to uninstall and reinstall Firefox. If things are still not working properly with the portable edition, you may have to do the same uninstalling/reinstalling, but this time with NVDA. Another idea is to disable all NVDA and/or Firefox add-ons and extensions and see if something there may be causing troubles. If things work after that, try enabling things one at a time, and one of them will likely break Firefox selection for you, but you'll know what the culprit is this time. Hopefully something will work. I just tested things again with NVDA 2018.2, Windows 10 and Firefox 61.0.2, both 64-bit, and all worked as expected. Good luck, Travis

Re: Windows 10 and email
Abbie Taylor
@Brian Vogel, thank you so much for the link to the Mozilla add-on to Thunderbird. Once I installed this, it took me a few minutes to figure out that in order to configure columns in a message list, you have to select an item such as correspondent and then determine where it should be by pressing the up and down buttons. For those of you who use Sero, it's very similar to the process of determining the order of items on your home screen.
This is truly wonderful. Now I can use first letter navigation in my message lists. Thank you again, Brian. -- Abbie Johnson Taylor, Author http://abbiescorner.wordpress.com http://www.abbiejohnsontaylor.com abbietaylor945@... Yes, is very easy to use, I have set up a blog on there, but still deciding what to do with it. I definitely recommend Word press. The .com is free, the .org site you pay so much, but you can create more professional looking blogs. David Moore

Hi everyone,
I have decided to be brave and set up a blog on my site at www.multisensorydesign.ie to discuss various aspects of the approach and ideas for multisensory design as against purely visual solutions such as those that cause us such a nuisance.
I have been doing some research and WordPress keeps coming up. Is this the best option for managing a blog non-visually using NVDA?
All ideas and suggestion welcome!

Try restarting NVDA. I did have that work one time when the normal selection methods seemed to be broken. No guarantees, but worth a try at least I think. Pressing ctrl+alt+n will automatically close and restart NVDA.

Re: strange behavior with add on updater
This evening when I launched NVDA 2018.2.1 and Add-On Updater popped up, indicating that it had an update for itself, it was impossible to interact with the checkbox, even using a mouse, and thus the update could not be completed. I had to cancel out of the Add-On Updater dialog.
