Hi everyone,

 

I have decided to be brave and set up a blog on my site at www.multisensorydesign.ie to discuss various aspects of the approach and ideas for multisensory design as against purely visual solutions such as those that cause us such a nuisance.

 

I have been doing some research and WordPress keeps coming up. Is this the best option for managing a blog non-visually using NVDA?

 

All ideas and suggestion welcome!

Hi Jackie,


Here's one thing I thought of trying. This should tell us if your
Firefox update might have corrupted things somehow.


Grab the portable version of Firefox:

https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable

It's version 62.0.2, the latest right now, and choose where you want it
on your computer.

When done, open it up and see if you can select text normally, or if
you're still having trouble. If things are normal, your desktop
installation may have corrupted, and you might have to uninstall and
reinstall Firefox. If things are still not working properly with the
portable edition, you may have to do the same uninstalling/reinstalling,
but this time with NVDA.

Another idea is to disable all NVDA and/or Firefox add-ons and
extensions and see if something there may be causing troubles. If things
work after that, try enabling things one at a time, and one of them will
likely break Firefox selection for you, but you'll know what the culprit
is this time.

Hopefully something will work.

I just tested things again with NVDA 2018.2, Windows 10 and Firefox
61.0.2, both 64-bit, and all worked as expected.

So no problems but I am using a 32 bit version of fire fox but do not
think that would  just because you have a 64 bit version it would do

Unfortunately, it's been doing this since I updated sometime last
week, ie, it's been restarted multiple times since.

is very easy to use, I have set up a blog on there, but still deciding what
to do with it.
I definitely recommend Word press.
The .com is free, the .org site you pay so much, but you can create more
professional looking blogs.

Try restarting NVDA. I did have that work one time when the normal
selection methods seemed to be broken. No guarantees, but worth a try at
least I think. Pressing ctrl+alt+n will automatically close and restart
NVDA.

No problem with closing it every time i just use the alt key + f4 key to do this. This is on a windows 10 machine ver 1803 with nvda 2018.2.1

Is your machine sluggish? all of the time or is it say when you close the app it seems slow to close it.

Hi about 3 weeks ago I reported that if I close windows mail NVDA stop talking and I have to close it down and re open it

it say the word then selecting or is it selected all the line i want

Thanks, Gene. I never really knew what locking and unlocking the mouse meant. As you said, easy enough to do now that I get it.

yes you had to use object navigation to do it you would then find the column you wanted use the lock mouse button go to the place where you wanted it then unlock the mouse. It was quite easy to do but if people were not use to it they would not go there.

I think you could also do it with the physical mouse do the same thing.

when the golden cursor come to the add on website then it would let you use the arrow keys to move the mouse around and a bit more. Even labeling i think you call it hot spots.

That would make it super easy.

later on tonight I will add in a link to the tutorial on mozilla thunder bird to this add on. so people know it is there. I think some of the new users are not aware they can install add ons or where to go for extra functionality.

I just figured people knew it was there so did not add it into the tutorial but it looks as though people are unaware.

Outlook Express was my second favorite though large identities could get corrupt at times, losing all messages in the process, something Windows Mail on Vista solved by having each message be its own file rather than the full identity be one large file. A dream program for me would have been Vista's Windows Mail, but with identities added, but with the messages still being one to a file rather than the whole identity.

I tried Windows Live, but it was moving very slow on this machine, even the earlier installer Brian had saved.

That's one reason I refuse to use the program.  I consider this to be a serious enough disregarding of accessibility that I refuse to use it unless I really need to.  I know there are ways around the problem but this really leaves a bad taste in my mouth and the problem has been around for years, as long as I've casually followed the program, which has been perhaps eight years or more. 

 

The designers must have gotten complaints over the years, probably a lot of them.

Same here, Travis. That's one of my biggest pet peeves about Thunderbird, the fact that it displays the subject first instead of the sender's name. So far, I haven't been able to find a way to fix this, either. That's one  reason why I tried the mail app, which does display messages with the sender first.
