Questions about NVDA 2018.3 emoji support.
John Isige
So I was playing around with emojis, and I've noticed that some of them aren't read, and some of them are read twice. To reproduce, go into the emoji panel, I'm hitting Windows-; (semicolon) in case that matters, and tab to people. I land on "woman, 1 of 175". Arrowing right I hear "woman, man, 3 of 175, girl", and so on. Now arrow back to the left until you get to woman. Hit the down arrow, and you'll get "older woman". Keep arrowing right until you hear "12 of 175". If you arrow right two times, each time you hear "man with turban" and the rising tone of a question mark. I'm pretty sure that later in the list there are three of the same thing in a row at least.
I don't know where the emoji naming comes from, if they're specified in NVDA source or they're drawing on something internal to Windows or what, but I thought I'd mention it. Incidentally, Narrator reads this just fine, I think 3 of 175 is a girl, 12 is a prince, the two things that show up as "man with turban" are a woman and a man wearing a turban, respectively, and so on. Narrator's kind of slow, if I arrow too fast I get duplicated names instead of new ones, but I don't think that's what's going on with NVDA. My other question was whether NVDA reads emojis now, the answer is yes if you read by line but not by character apparently, because I just added and deleted some from this email. So that's that solved I guess. Sorry I didn't point this out in the RC phase, things have been crazy around here and I didn't really get a chance to do much with them other than run them and see that they didn't break anything.

Re: Update On Firefox Crashing Issue
JM Casey <crystallogic@...>
I refreshed Firefox over the weekend to see if it would solve my own issue (still seems like a JAWS problem on my end and not an NVDA one). It didn't. However you can definitely do this refresh from within the options screen. Can't remember exactly where it's found; it's in there somewhere though.

This does work. I am using it with NVDA 2018.3 as of this writing. I tested it to make sure connection was successful. It communicates with NVDARemote.com just fine.

Hi,
here's a patched version of this add-on. Joseph Lee made a patch awhile ago. This works with NVDA 2018.3. https://www.josephsl.net/files/nvdaaddons/remote-2.1wxPy4-1807.nvda-addon René

Re: NVDA 2018.3

Hi Anthony, Did it fail with an error or because the file was corrupt (didn't download properly)? You can redownload it from: https://www.nvaccess.org/download/ (select "Skip donation this time" unless you want to make a donation, and you don't need to enter an email address). Otherwise, a couple of reasons it might start installing and then fail: - Windows displays a User Account Control dialog - a dialog that appears in front of everything else which you need to respond to by pressing "Yes" for the install to continue - sometimes it appears behind everything else and you need to alt+tab to it. If you don't respond within 30 seconds or so, it will automatically fail. - If you have "Controlled Folder Access" turned on in Windows 10, it will install, but it will fail to create the desktop shortcut and so show a failure error. Otherwise, if you keep encountering it, if you could give me more information, I'd be interested in trying to get to the bottom of it. Regards Quentin.

Hi quentin While I was doing the installation of NVDA 2018.3 it failed. Could you please tell me from where I can get it to install it? With thanks in advance Anthony

A couple of things to check first: - Have you restarted the computer after updating NVDA? If not, please try that first. - Try restarting NVDA with addons disabled and see if the Firefox issues recur. - If so, check for latest versions of all your add-ons, and failing that, please let us know which is being problematic / which you have enabled. - Double check that you can in fact start firefox without NVDA 2018.3 running (either with an older version of NVDA or Narrator). - If you can get Firefox to start (perhaps with an older version of NVDA), if you go to the address bar and type:
about:crashes
If you could get me the one of the latest crash IDs (the seemingly random string of characters), I can get Mozilla to look into it.
Regards
Quentin.

Re: firefox crash with NVDA 2018.3

Hi Mary, No, all feedback is good, and indeed it does indicate what I suspected - there likely is some kind of issue at play, but it isn't affecting EVERYONE who uses Firefox, or even everyone using 32-bit Firefox. Interested to hear if you do have any issues though. Regards Quentin.

Quentin Christensen
Yes, I did just see that (or I just saw someone post that). I'd still like to double check whether there's an issue with any add-ons, or anything else that might be contributing, as it seems there is an issue, but even narrowed down to 32-bit FF on 32-bit Windows users, it doesn't appear to be affecting everyone.

Re: Could not find remote addons under Tools

NVDA Remote 2.1 (the latest version), isn't currently compatible with NVDA 2018.3. The NVDA Remote team are aware and our understanding is that they were waiting for us to release 2018.3 before they released their update (due to backward compatibility issues I believe). We are hoping that comes out very shortly. In the meantime, we recommend users needing NVDA Remote not upgrade to NVDA 2018.3 until the update to NVDA Remote comes out. Regards Quentin.

Quentin, if you didn't see it, Ann just said that she was running 32-bit Firefox on a 32-bit machine. Seems that 32-bit Firefox is now having a negative effect on both 32-bit and 64-bit machines with anything past NVDA 2018.2.1. I, who am on a 64-bit Firefox with a 64-bit Windows 10, am not having said problems. Travis

Hi.
I don’t know if you were responding directly to me, but as it happens I have a 64-bit Firefox and a 64-bit oS. I’m not looking for a solution to my JAWS problem on the NVDA list, although the mixed messages I am getting about Firefox screen-reader support are a bit perplexing. Still, there seem to be plenty of NVDA users having no trouble.
My questions below pertained to Waterfox, which I’ve never used, but some people here swear by.

Hi
If you have a 64 bit version of fire fox on a 64 bit operating system nvda will play nicely with it with nvda 2018.3
How ever it seems if you have a 32 bit version of fire fox on a 64 bit operating system it will crash. I only noticed this in the betas then the RC and now 2018.3
It did not seem to do it on the stable version of nvda 2018.2.1 or the alfa version. So some thing has changed between releases.

Hi Ann, As others have suggested, if you are using a 32-bit version of Firefox on a 64-bit version of Windows, that could be the problem, in which case the solution is to use the 64-bit version of Firefox. The other thing is to make sure you have restarted the computer since installing NVDA, as restarting fixes a lot of issues like this we see when people have updated but not yet restarted. Also, if you restart NVDA with add-ons disabled (NVDA+Q then down arrow to that option and enter) it might indicate whether the issue is in NVDA or an add-on. It is also worth checking to see if there are new versions of any of your add-ons. Finally, if you could send me a copy of your log, I can have a look and try and ascertain what the issue is so we can fix it. Kind regards Quentin.
