Oddly that didn't help. Also, after re-ennabling and attempting to remove and reinstall the addon the options for win10 apps no longer show up in the prefferences menu. Could it be disabled or similar, even though it shows as running in addon mannager?

Hi Joseph and all,

First off, thanks for all the work that you do on these addons. I just wanted to point out a slight inconsistancy that I'm experiencing with win10 app essencials.

Every time I do an alt+tab to move to a different application, I hear task switching.

Disabling the addon fixes this. I'm just wondering if this is expected, and if so if there's a way to get around this?

I'm running windows10-1709 64bit and nvda 2017.4

Thanks for any help with this,

Windows 10 App Essentials 18.03A emergency patch released #addonrelease

Hi everyone,

First, for those who’ve reported issues with Windows 10 App Essentials 18.03: my sincere apologies. I have corrected the root problem (explained below in detail). Due to something beyond my control, notification announcements in newer apps in Windows 10 Version 1709 (Fall Creators Update) will be restricted to NVDA 2018.1 and later.

Because of the regression, the add-on won’t work (update feature won’t work). Thus, please manually install 18.03A via this link:

https://github.com/josephsl/wintenApps/releases/download/18.03/wintenApps-18.03A.nvda-addon

Also, for those using NVDA 2017.4 and happen to use development snapshots for this add-on: you’re also affected by this regression. The current workaround is to manually apply 18.03A first, and NVDA will then check for the emergency patch for today’s development snapshot. Also, if you are using NVDA 2017.4 and add-on dev snapshots, please report this kind of regression ASAP, otherwise those using stable version will go through what they just went through. Lastly, I’m not free from this mess: again, my apologies for this mess in the first place.

Technical: NVDA 2017.4 uses older version of comtypes, a dependency used to talk to COM (Component Object Model) routines. Also, it may have been built with older Windows 10 SDK. As a result, UIA notification event and associated routines are not included as part of that release. Thankfully, NVDA 2018.1 does include newer version of the dependency and may have been built with newer Windows 10 SDK release, thus UIA notification announcement (and debugging routines) will work.

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: Problem with wintenApps-18.03.nvda-addon

Hi,

This is a regression (my fault for not doing a more thorough check). An emergency patch (18.03A) will hit the air soon. Because the add-on might not be functional for some, I’ll provide a link to manually download the stable build. An updated announcement will go out at the same time.

Now this is interesting. Is yours one of the versions of Outlook that
uses
Word as its editor?
I get this all the time in word. I have a feeling its nvda hooking into
something making it think something has changed, for example. I create a
word document, I save it, I then go to exit word and it says the text has
changed do I want to save it again so to speak. Not every time, but
enough
to be annoying.

You don't have to do control a.  The text in the address bar is already selected.  Just control c is sufficient.  If Internet Explorer is being used, go to the address bar with f6.  Then copy the address to the clipboard with control c.
You can return to the web page where you were working, with the command control f6.  Then paste the address into an e-mail message with the command control v.  It will be pasted wherever you are writing.  If you have written a line that says, here is the address of the page and then press enter, the address will be pasted onto its own line.  then press return again and write more if you wish.  It isn't mandatory to put the address on its own line, but blind people usually do when writing to other blind people for convenience.

Re: question

Antony Stone

If that really is the site Anthony's talking about (I await his confirmation),
then there are MP3 URLs embedded in the source code of the podcast pages, and
those URLs can be downloaded as offline-playable MP3s.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a standard pattern for converting a
podcast page URL to the corresponding MP3 download URL, but it's certainly
possible to download the podcasts.

I found the URLs by starting from a page with the player on it, pressing the
Windows Context key (without any link focused) and then selecting "View Page
Info" from the context menu which appears. If you then move one icon to the
right (from "General" to "Media"), you get a list of all the media links on
the page, and one of them is the downloadable MP3.

I hope that helps,

Antony.

Just giving the name without a suffix such as org or com with the user
not having any idea what it is is not sufficient. Also, the user has no
idea whether the podcast is on the home page or some other page. If you
don't know how to copy an address from the address bar of the browser

The problem is that we don't know what you are trying to download, and the

Show us a URL for the podcast, or at least for a page containing a link to

Until you show us the specific thing you want to download, we're just

Re: question

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

Its not a problem its how the page is designed. You could look at the code in the downloaded page to see if it has any file name in it, odds are though it uses a javascript routine to find the file which you are unable to access any other way, ie, its not designed for download just listening on line, in which case if you want to keep it you may have to resort to virtual recorder as somebody else said.

In order to help, we need details. What browser are you using? When you
press enter on the file, does it play in the browser or open another
program? Is the file actually referred to as a podcast? We don't know, at
this point, if the file is being played as it is fully downloaded into the
browser or a player or if it is a stream that only plays part of the file,
overwrites what it has played as it plays move.

Can you give the address of the page where the file link is?

I discussed the file type briefly but my main point is that using the
context menu will allow you to save files on some sites and not on others.
this is not related to the file type, it's how the site is constructed.

We don't know, but my guess is that, in this case, Internet Explorer is
being used and the file opens in Windows Media player, hence the question of
how to save from there.

In the context of other browsers, not the archaic Internet Explorer, the
file is played in the browser when you press enter on the link. If you are
on a site where save target as or equivalent doesn't work, you need to know
that you can use the command control s while the file is playing, and save
it while in the browser in that way.

Of course, that presupposes that you are dealing with an actual file that is
playing from the site as a file, and not a stream. The stream plays a
little of a file and then refreshes the buffer in the browser or player but
the entire file is never available. Just a little bit ahead of where you
are listening. It can't be saved because it is a stream, not a file playing
as a file from the web site. Since this is called a podcast in the
question, the odds are that it is an actual file being played from the web
site, not a stream as I am using the word.

Hello Gene,

If you read my message again, I do say, “We don’t know what kind of file it
is so can’t be specific”,

It’s worth a try anyway, if the original questioner could say exactly what
podcast is to be downloaded, that would be better.

As you rightly say, that is why you asked questions.

That is one way you can save many files. But it is important to know other
ways as well. Some sites don't support downloading files in that way.
That's why I asked questions such as whether the file opens in Windows media
Player.

Hello,

Pressing enter on the link will probably open it, if it’s to be downloaded,
try the context menu, [key to the left of the right control key on a
standard keyboard], you get options including maybe “save as” or “save
target as”, this should bring up the normal save as dialogue and the file
can be saved to a folder, from there it cvan be opened in a program such as
Windows media player.

We don’t know what kindof file it is so can’t be specific, I hope this helps
and good luck.

Best Regards, Jim.

But when you press enter on the link, what happens? Does it play In Media

Daniel

Word as its editor?
I get this all the time in word. I have a feeling its nvda hooking into
something making it think something has changed, for example. I create a
word document, I save it, I then go to exit word and it says the text has
changed do I want to save it again so to speak. Not every time, but enough
