Re: Question
Gene
It isn't just a question of how much memory is
needed. NVDA doesn't use a lot of memory by itself. But if you use a
newer speech synthesizer with more natural sounding voices, I can't remember the
names now, perhaps because I dislike most of them and don't use any, The voices
will use much more memory.
So the question has to be defined in this way. If you have sufficient memory to run the programs
you are running generally, unless you are using your existing RAM almost to the
limit, NVDA with older synthesizers won't require additional memory. If
you are using a newer synthesizer, you may if you are using most of your RAM
without running NVDA.

Lets just say that the most probable issue will be the minimum spec needed to run other software you want to use. Most will be more greedy than nvda. From my experience at least a 2 core processor is needed particularly if you want to use other speech synths. it is also highly recomented that you run windows 10, though i use 7 with no real problems, it will be the more modern machines that have the better spec. other peoples cast offs that are running 7 may well only have a single core processor and 2 gig of ram which might make things very sluggish. i do successfully run the older versions of nvda on xp machines and there has been no changes since modern versions of nvda cannot run in xp. Even on those old machines though browsers tend to be very slow indeed and its got little to do with nvda! So its really up to what you are trying to do on your computer I feel and what options are open to you in your country. Brian> bglists@... Sent via blueyonder. If you can run the latest master, and the problem is what I think is being suspected, then it has a tool that attempts to fix such problems in windows installations.

Hi I do not have such a modern version of word, but have also noticed on some versions of word if the view is set to anything but normal which some authors seem to do a lot, page breaks and text around them get mangled as well. This did not used to happen.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
its easy to change view of course, but its strange. Also sometimes you get an error dong at top and bottom of some files on snapshots. it appears to be benign but weird. Also noted sometimes task switching say from word to jarte gets stuck for a while but eventually works then no further issues. I suspect a lot of this is the old UIA sluggishness though. I'm using Windows 7 and its probably just the way the world is on this. Brian bglists@... Sent via blueyonder. Yes I do not see why not. Just allocate a folder and save a portable version to that, and then overwrite the current version with a new download of whatever you want to have as default. What I do is to have a desktop shortcut to a batch file in each portable versions folder. The batch file is basically.

I know I have not posted in here for a while. I was at nvda con tonight. I did not talk or anything but to say one thing in the text chat. I’d love to try to become a resource of help, (tech support you might say), for the community. I’m not around all the time right now but I’d do my best for you all. I use the nvda snapshots right now and its installed as the default screen reader on my computer. My question is could I switch to make this one as a portable copy and switch back to the official versions for the main copy that I’d use almost always like I do this snapshot right now? I hope I made myself understandable. Have a good night or day Scott Sent from Mail for Windows 10

I don't know what synth these use, as said in the thread previously, if they are a separate synth to the normal ones, somebody needs to write the driver for nvda so it can use the protocol used by the synth.

I've encountered this sometimes in Chrome.

I just hit [NVDA Key]+[F5] to refresh the screen and Browse mode navigation shortcut keys work as normal. I use several extensions in Google Chrome to strip away ads and banners. Think the downside to that is the end results isn't past to NVDA fully sometimes, thus I refresh.

Possible Bug in 2018RC2: When navigating in Word 2016's backstage view items are repeated twice
David Goldfield
Hi. Not sure if this is a new bug but I don't recall this occurring with 2018.1.1.
Issue: When navigating in Word 2016's backstage view (file menu) each item is announced twice.
Steps to Reproduce 1. Open Word 2016 (Office 365.) 2. Press alt+F to open the backstage view. 3. Press down arrow to navigate items.
Actual Results Each item is being announced twice. Example: "new new" "open open"
Expected Results Each item should be announced once. --

Fixing AutoLinks FireFox
David Russell
Hello NVDA,
I have not had much time since posting the question about how to fix things so that when entering URLs they appear as auto-links on facebook posts in particular. However, Brian guided me in the possible right direction in suggesting it is a FB thing. FB meaning Facebook. They have some articles on this at their website that will take some time to read and understand and determine just where the fix needs to occur. I wonder how my sighted peers who are writers are getting links to post in Facebook? Guess reading the literature will tell me. Thanks for your interest. -- David Russell david.sonofhashem@...

Out of curiosity do you hear sounds or hear browse mode and focus mode when you go between those modes? if it is the sound one i think you hear a letter sound and when you are out of focus mode you hear another sound. if you want to hear them spoken have a look under the browse mode settings and uncheck the following box called Audio indication of focus and browse modes then save your settings. If you tab a couple of times do you hear unknown or pane? Do you also hear it under say the running applications part on windows and it is not speaking the icons down there and some other stuff like that? By the way which version of nvda are you running? did you download the latest nvda 2018.2 rc2 version if so there is a tool in this version of nvda that might fix it. If you are not really getting that stuff then we can sus some thing else out and maybe narrow it a little. Gene nz
