NVDA 2018.3rc1 now available

Hi everyone, NV Access has just released NVDA 2018.3rc1. This is a Release Candidate, meaning that unless any critical bugs are found, this will be identical to the final 2018.3 release. Highlights of this release include automatic detection of many Braille displays, support for new Windows 10 features including the Windows 10 Imoji input panel, and many other bug fixes. then pick the "view full size" link. It doesn't always make a difference, but I've found that sometimes viewing it full size will get me some text where simply highlighting the graphic, say with the arrows, and hitting NVDA-r doesn't give me anything.

Hi Robert, In Windows 10, navigate to the graphic with the text, then press NVDA+r (the NVDA key will be either INSERT or CAPS LOCK, depending on your settings). NVDA should report that it is recognizing, and then "done". Once done is announced, you can use the regular navigation and reading keys to read the text, as you would other text on the page. When done, press escape to return to the web page. For anyone reading this using Windows 7 or 8, it's very similar using the add-on, press NVDA+r but then you use the text review commands rather than regular navigation. Kind regards Quentin.

Just want to admit that I was wrong about the blind mice megamall site not being accessible. I just became a member. To the person who said that the site is not accessible, you have to look at the form in browse mode. Then you can fill it out. I looked at the site in both firefox and internet explorer. This is a great lesson to learn for all of us--not to jump to conclusions.

NVDA’s compatibility with the Braille Me Braille display from NBP?

Anyone have used, or knows if the Braille Me display from National Braille Press, is compatible at this time with NVDA? If so, what’s the process for this because my student hooks her up to her Windows10 computer via USB; does NVDA+N to get into the NVDA menu; P for Preferences, and B for Braille. She gets to the list of compatible Braille displays, but the Braille Me doesn’t appear to be within! Where could she download the drivers, or what might the problem be? She was told by the folks at npb THAT nvda IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE BEFORE-MENTIONED DISPLAY. THANKS FOR ANY INFO YOU GUYS COULD GIVE ON THE MATTER.

Hi Robert, As Brian noted, NVDA uses Microsoft's built-in OCR in Windows 10 (which is why it is only built-in on Windows 10 and you need the add-on for earlier Windows versions). Microsoft are evolving Windows 10 with their regular updates, and presumably this also involves improving the OCR. In the meantime, have you got an example image or link which isn't working for you? Hi Kim, The keystroke to read from the current point onwards is either NVDA+down arrow, if using desktop keyboard layout, or NVDA+a if using laptop keybpard layout. The NVDA key is either INSERT or CAPS LOCK depending on your setup. Basically desktop keyboard layout assumes you have a number pad, and uses that for a number of commands, particularly object navigation and the review cursor. Laptop layout assumes you don't have a number pad and reassigns those keystrokes, in the process moving some other keystrokes around. Press NVDA+control+k to open the keybpard settings page where you can change your NVDA key and / or your NVDA keyboard layout. And as Jason answered, you can get to the full list of keyboard commands from NVDA"s help menu (NVDA+n, then h, then arrow through the options). The "Commands Quick Reference" document is basically all the keystrokes pulled from the User Guide. You might also be interested in the "Basic Training for NVDA" module, which walks through many of the features of NVDA, but in more detail than the User Guide, and with step-by-step, practical activities to complete to help you cement your knowledge of each: http://www.nvaccess.org/shop/ Kind regards Quentin.

This is the chunk on Outlook (and I did it using Outlook 2010 when I wrote it up, but I don't believe much has changed in 2013 and 2016) I wrote up when working with a client several years ago and that forms a segment I use to create personalized "shortcut sheets" for clients now:

To Delete a Message that you’ve just finished reading: Hit ALT+H,D when you’re in the reading window and it will delete the message and throw you back to your inbox.
To Delete a Message in your inbox without opening it to read it: When JAWS starts reading the e-mail header and subject in the list from the inbox just hit delete if you want to delete that message. It will be deleted and you will be thrown on to the next message in the inbox.
Two Methods for Using Advanced Search features to find specific e-mail messages, step-by-step: Method 1 1. Navigate to the folder in Outlook that you wish to search for specific messages, e.g., inbox, sent, etc. Make sure you’re in that folder for the correct e-mail account you wish to search, too. 2. Hit CTRL+SHIFT+F to bring up the Advanced Search Dialog box. This dialog box has three separate tabs associated with it: Message, More Choices, and Advanced. The Message tab is what’s showing when the dialog opens. You can shift between dialog box tabs by hitting CTRL+TAB at any time. 3. Message Tab has the following fields and dropdown/combo boxes, in the order that follows. You need only enter information related to what you are actually trying to search for, leave the others blank: a. Search for the word(s): Combo box where you enter the word(s) you’re trying to find. It searches for those words based upon the choice from the dropdown box described in item ‘b’ that comes next. b. In: Dropdown with three choices: subject field only | subject field and message body | frequently-used text fields. c. From… Button – Used only if you wish to choose who the message is from using your Contacts. If you do not have Contacts or the sender is not in your Contacts, then go to item ‘d’, the edit box for “From” searching. d. From Edit Box Enter all or part of the sender’s name or e-mail address that the message you’re looking for came from. e. Sent To… Button – Used only if you wish to choose who the message was sent to using your Contacts. If you do not have Contacts or the person you sent to is not in your Contacts, then go to item ‘f’, the edit box for “Sent to” searching. f. Sent to Edit Box Enter all or part of the recipient’s name or e-mail address that the message you’re looking for was sent to. g. Where I am checkbox. If checked, gives you access to item ‘h’, the “Where I am” dropdown box. h. Where I am dropdown box. Three choices: the only person on the To line | on the To line with other people | on the CC line with other people. i. Time dropdown box, used in conjunction with item ‘j’, time criterion dropdown. Has six choices regarding what time you want to search on: none (default) | received | sent | due | expires | created | modified. Some of these choices are related to tasks or appointments, not e-mail messages. j. Time criterion dropdown: Seven choices for e-mail related searches: Anytime | Yesterday | Today | in the last 7 days | Last Week | This Week | Last Month. 4. More Choices Tab has the following items in the following order: a. Categories. . . button and Categories combo box pair. Allows you to choose a category from your predefined list if you use categories. b. Only items that are checkbox and dropdown box pair. If you check the checkbox, you can choose from the following two choices in the dropdown box: unread (default) | read. c. Only items with checkbox and dropdown box pair. If you check the checkbox, you can choose from the following two choices in the dropdown box: one or more attachments (default) | no attachments. d. Whose importance is checkbox and dropdown box pair. If you check the checkbox, you can choose from the following three choices in the dropdown box: normal (default) | high | low. e. Only items which checkbox and dropdown box pair. If you check the checkbox, you can choose from the following four choices in the dropdown box: are flagged by me (default) | are marked completed | are flagged by someone else | have no flag. f. Match case checkbox. Makes search on words case sensitive. g. Size (kilobytes) dropdown box and low and high size numbers triad. Default is “doesn’t matter” and if that’s left alone you have no access to the low and high size numbers. Other choices allow you to specify the smallest (low) and largest (high) size you wish to search for, as appropriate for the choice. Those choices are: equals (approximately) | between | less than | greater than. 5. Advanced Tab – so seldom used I will not discuss it here. 6. Hit either Enter, or ALT+N to perform the search based on the various criteria you have entered in the dialog. If results are returned, hit F6 to go to the list of found messages. Method 2 1. Navigate to the folder in Outlook that you wish to search for specific messages, e.g., inbox, sent, etc. Make sure you’re in that folder for the correct e-mail account you wish to search, too. 2. Hit CTRL+E to get yourself in to the search edit box 3. Type in the following search operators, in whatever combination is appropriate to narrow down the messages returned to as few as possible, but without eliminating messages you might want: a. to: – Enter a partial or full name or e-mail address between the parenthesis. For example, to:britechguy, would return only messages sent to a person with “britechguy” as part of their e-mail address. b. from: – Same as to:, but looks at who the e-mail was from instead. c. hasattachments:yes|no – If you enter “yes” after the hasattachments: operator only messages that have attachments will be returned. If you enter “no” then only messages without attachments will be returned. d. subject: – Enter a keyword or several keywords that will be searched for in the Subject of the e-mail. Only those messages with the keyword(s) in the subject will be returned. e. received: - Used to filter messages based on when you received them. Do you know if there is documentation showing how much control of the PC you get with TextBridge and Dragon 15? PL] dictationBridge will give you full hands free control of the screen reader. Dragon does give you full hands free control of the pc. Can Dragon open applications such as email and Word? PL] Yes. This is a dragon function. You say "start microsoft word" for instance to start word. To launch e-mail, you say "start outlook" or "start e-mail" I think. Can you move through a list of emails or files in a folder with Dragon commands? PL] Yes. Right now, if using dictationBridge, you say "press down arrow" or "press right arrow" or "press up arrow" to move through a list depending on what keys you press on the keyboard to navigate through the list. If this info is in a document, where might I find it? PL] You find most of this info in Dragon's help. You can find dictationBridge commands by looking at the dictationBridge documentation. The best thing to do with commands is to look at the Dragon command browser. Pranav

I just typed this up for another person but this is done on a windows 10 machine same idea for earlier versions of windows but ddone a rough step by step of what to do. Where i also mentioned jjj on the usb stick been labeled this is more if you do not use narrator to start nvda . In my case i can use the Windows key + letter E to bring up file manager which shows my drives then press the letter J so it jumps down to the usb stick then press the enter key to go into it then the letter N for the nvda directory then the enter key to go into it then the letter N for the nvda.exe file then the enter key then nvda will start up. The way i like to start nvda on a computer from a usb stick is first to format your usb stick so there is no data on it. it will give you the option to label the USBstick so call this jjj then i think you format it. After you have done that with your installed version of nvda press the nvda key + letter N arrow down to tools a sub menu will come off ithen arrow down to create portable copy then press the enter key. make sure your usb stick is in the computer before you do this. It will then land you in a editable area if you already know what letter it asigned to it you could type in the following. for example e:\nvda then tab until you hear copy current configuration you can check this box with the space bar there is also another check box which you can check called Start the new portable copy after creation then tab to continue then press the enter key wait a little while then it will put the files into the nvda directory and when finished a message will come up saying it has been done. If you do not know what the letter of the cd drive was a signed in that editable area mentioned before tab to the browse button then press the enter key or space bar will do it. Now shift/tab a few times until you hear nvda say tree view. Mine i hear C:\ drive. Use the arrow keys to point it towards your usb stick. In most cases it is the e:\ drive. You will then need to create a directory called nvda. If done correctly when you tab a couple of times you should then hear the portable directory now is called e:\nvda make sure the 2 boxes are checked it is up to you what you do then tab to continue then press the enter key and wait until it is made. Depending how you want to start it on a new computer if you are new to it you can use narrator start him up on my windows 10 machine is is the ctrl key + windows key + enter key. When he starts up locate where your drives are locate the usb stick then find the older called nvda then find the nvda.exe file then he will start up nvda. Then you can turn off narrator just alt/tab until you hear narrator then use alt + f4 key to close it. there are other ways of doing it that can be found on my nvda audio tutorials page on my website. If you do it on a CD nvda must be in a directory called nvda and there is a autorun.inf file that must be installed in the root directory of the CD. Also in later versions of windows now you have to go into the control panel then autoplay part of it make sure the check box is checked to see all devices and the following turned on right down near the bottom called Software and games Install or run program from your media If you look under the nvda audio tutorials page there are different ways of starting nvda also putting it onto a CD and USB stick. You will need to jump down by headings to you hear it either for a cd or usb stick. Gene nz
