Hello gene Last thursday I got the update of the windows essential for NVDA, but by mistake instead I pressed alt-y to install it, I pressed the escape key. So do I have to do that update manually now? and if I have to do that from where I should do it? Thanks in advance Anthony

I don't have a suggestion about how to eliminate the behavior but I suspect you are asking because you reboot regularly, perhaps once a day. This is unnecessary. You should reboot from time to time, but you may not have to do so for many days or perhaps a seven day week or more. You can experiment and see at what point the system develops instability or odd problems start to occur. You can use hibernate and eliminate the problem except when you do a full reboot.

You can try dism++. Download it from https://www.chuyu.meUnzip and run dism++x86.exe if your system is 32bit. Press Ctrl+Shift+S to save your current system to a wim or esd image. If you want to restore your backup. Run dism++ inside a Preinstall Environment . Alt+F then press down arrow. Apply backup image to your system drive.

`Brian,
It was good of you to take the time to reply. Actually, Sarah directed me to the same spot in settings. I followed your steps but, as I said in my original note, I already made the adjustment here and change the male voice to female - just to be sure that I had found the right setting. However, the voice is still a male speaking slowly. All the settings that I can find, including Narrator, had the speed much faster than the voice that is speaking in the password prompt during Start-up!
It looks to me as though we are all caught at the same unexplained position!
Would you agree?

I am running Windows10 Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.165) with NVDA Version: 2018.2.1 I have Windows speaking the password prompt at bootup. The system is using a completely different voice from the Eloquence that I use in NVDA. That makes me think this is a Windows setting rather than an NVDA setting. I cannot find where the system voice is located or how it is managed so that I can adjust the speaking rate. Any ideas where I can find it and how to adjust the rate?

Re: Need to speed up Slow voice on Windows start-up
Cearbhall O'Meadhra
Sarah,
Thank you for coming back so quickly. I did think of this, too! However, the voice being used in settings is not the one that speaks in the password prompt. I changed the voice from male to female to make this completely obvious and still the password prompt was in a male voice! I then tried to see if I am invoking Narrator to cover the start-up prompt but, again, no joy. In fact, the narrator voice is set to full speed so could not be the voice that is operating in the start-up window.
Any other thoughts?

You generally only need/want to do this if you have installed multiple languages or multiple dialects (e.g., US, UK, Australian, Canadian English) for a single language. If this is the case, you then have to pick the Language under Preferred Languages for which you wish to change the default base speech rate used by Windows 10 itself, "activate it" [for me, a left mouse click] such that its Options button appears, then activate that. Under the dialog that then pops up there is an area entitled "Speech" with a link Settings, which you have to activate. Then there's a slider in that dialog for Rate. 2. Speech Pane. This allows you to tweak base rate for individual voices within a language pack or across language packs without changing them all. There is a section entitled "Text to Speech" under which is a dropdown allowing you to pick the voice you want and once you have that there is a slider for Speed. After you tweak the slider there is a "Preview" button to let you hear a sample of what your choice will sound like. Of course, programs that use speech synthesis as part and parcel of their functioning generally allow rate tweaking from within their own settings, too. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1803, Build 17134 A little kindness from person to person is better than a vast love for all humankind. ~ Richard Dehmel

I take my hands off the typing keys and grope the braille; then I scroll up or down to find the message because it is not usually right on the display; then I pan left or right to find the actual words among the clutter of padding from the skype program.
