Re: Is there a way to turn off announcement of table column and row headings?

Luke Davis

Well, you can try turning off layout tables in Browse Mode settings (NVDA+control+b), or actually turning off column and row header announcements in document formatting settings (NVDA+control+d, then alt+e twice, followed by space and enter).

I would try the layout tables thing first.

As several have already mentioned, it also happens to me and I find it
quite annoying, it would be an interesting feature.

I am also interested in this, because I've been finding this behavior
annoying lately.

I don't have time to work on it right now either, but I would imagine you
probably need to monkeypatch something in speech/__init__.py. It needs to
keep track of the previous non-zero indentation, and for each indentation
that matches it, but was separated from it by a zero indentation, suppress
indentation announcement and beeps. Possibly something in
getIndentationSpeech(), although hopefully not in getTextInfoSpeech().

thought this would be the sort of feature you'd be interested in :)

I have no time to develop anything until mid-may after my final exams for my masters. If you develop it by then then that saves me work :) but otherwise I will have a crack at it

Hi. Thanks for the tips. I think the only add-on that wasn't on the add-ons website might have been "Report Passwords". There was one called "Speak Passwords" that was only compatible with NVDA 2019.3. I always want to be careful with other people's property, just in case something gets damaged, particularly in the case of add-ons or programs when it's unknown how the computer will react.

I would love to have this feature too. I checked NVDA sources a while ago, and I didn't see this feature implemented. I might implement this as a hack in one of my add-ons some day.

I am not saying that NVDA shouldn't do this. this is definitely relevant information in some contexts, but I would love if there was an additional setting that would make indentation reporting ignore blank lines. so the previous line in the buffer that is compared to the new line to determine whether to announce indentation change would be the last non-blank line visited. so, the above example would read as:

Re: NVDA indentation reporting, can it ignore blank lines?

I can understand why you want this.  Even if I were editing pure text, I know I'd prefer not to hear "no indent" if there is actually no indent.  Reading the line, as is, should imply no indent.  But I can also understand wanting that to be a toggle, there are times where hearing "no indent" can be useful as well.

Re: windows 10 notifications

If the notification is still active and on display, WinKey+Shift+V.   Repeated presses should continue cycling through older notifications, but it's usually simpler just to go to the Action Center.

Otherwise, follow Mr. Maher's instructions and access your notifications list in the Action Center with WinKey+A

As Ted has implied, that really depends on how you are defining hotspot.

If you want it to act as a real hotspot, it must have internet connectivity so that it can send data "out there" whether it has it via an internal wireless connection like smartphones use or it's just connected to the internet by WiFi.  It will use whatever connection it has in the hotspot function to get things to cyberspace.

If you want it to act as a local area network, without necessarily being in contact with cyberspace, that can be done, too.  It's really the same concept as when your modem router somehow loses connectivity to cyberspace.  Even though that's gone, all the devices that are connected to it within your home, business, whatever can still communicate with each other.

Settings, Network & Internet, Mobile Hotspot Pane.  The toggle to turn this feature on says, Share my internet connection with other devices.  And that clearly states what it does as far as a connection to the internet.  If you have no connection to the internet, then it can't be shared, but you can still have connectivity between devices with the computer acting as the router.

Any additional deep diving into this feature should occur either on the Chat Subgroup or the Windows 10 for Screen Reader Users Group (or another venue of your choosing).

I think that if your laptop has a cellular modem in it, you can use it as a hotspot. However, if it is just a regular Wi-Fi network card, then no. I, however, have used my iPhone with cellular service as a hotspot when the Internet went down in my nursing home for a weekend.
