Hi,

The biggest advantage is reaching more people. Windows 10 S, and to some extent, other Windows 10 versions with some Group Policy settings applied, will restrict app installation sources to Microsoft Store. This means, if NVDA is approved for distribution on the Store, it can be found by anyone. There will of course be restrictions, but most features will work (unless Store submission policy changes).

Cheers,

joseph

None unless you are in a closed environment where only those apps can be run.
It cannot support a lot of what you need for this simple reason but I think its seen as a presence which is important for the long term.

looking for volunteers to help out with this add-on #AddonRelesae

Hi all,

Windows 10 App Essentials 18.02 is now available (from the usual place via
the usual update method). This release introduces a workaround for some apps
that wouldn't let NVDA announce new messages automatically, as well as
improving emoji panel experience for Windows Insiders.

Important: in order to concentrate on school and other things (including
putting last minute touches to Welcome to NVDA 2018 tutorial series and
preparing for national speech and debate competitions in April), I'm taking
a break from development of this add-on in February. During this time:

* There won't be a lot of development snapshot releases (worst case
scenario is none during February). I'll try my best to release one or two
development snapshots if an issue that requires my attention comes up
(especially if an Insider Preview breaks some functionality and urgent
workaround is needed).
* I'd like to request help from volunteers to maintain this add-on. If
you'd like to submit code (especially app modules for universal aps), please
send pull requests via GitHub. I'll try my best to incorporate your work
(giving credit in the process) as soon as I return from this "add-on
development vacation".

P.S. The real reason: Producing Welcome to NVDA 2018 tutorial set has burned
me out, thus I'm desperate for a break. Besides, I do need to concentrate on
preparing for possibly two national speech and debate competitions in April,
as well as making sure I am ready to learn new things in college courses
(for reference, I am a Cal State LA student and a speech and debate
competitor there alongside carrying out my duties for the NVDA community);
as much as NVDA community and my add-ons (and code contributions and what
not) are important, I cannot forget who I truly am (a student), hence taking
a break from NVDA activities for a while (I'll discuss my current situation
in a later post).

Thank you and enjoy the new WinTenApps update.

Cheers,

Joseph

I don't think its nvda actually at least it normally returns to normal after a reboot on windows 7, but then I just downloaded the latest master snap which I use as a daily version and have seen no problems. it might be in the next branch, as I only use that portably.

It sounds like you are using the Beta or developer version of NVDA as NVDA has not rleased a new version in about a month. If you are using software this new you should either know how to fix problems encountered, or know how to load a slightly older version without the issues you encounter. So, go to the snapshots page and load the NVDA from two or three days ago. Oh! And also report a bug in GIT.

It also means for a student or computer beginner windows 10 s may be a system which could be the way to go.

You don't get edge or any of the advanced features including windows home.

It could be a good starter and you can upgrade later on anyway.

If all you use is office, skype and other windows apps you may not need a full featured windows install, later on you can upgrade to a version of windows but with desktop app conversions you in theory could use any app as long as it is converted to a windows one.

I am a desktop user but, I am excited.

I mean just think, nvda on your x box is probably possible maybe win10 phone, pointless in that respect but can you imagine nvda on xbox, its not designed for it but I bet you it will run its like the renpy engine, a few games are not designed for voice support but they will run with varying degrees of access, which means while it may not be fully accessible I can and have payed for and gotten several free games which I otherwise wouldn't have access to.

Ofcause it goes without saying I will continue to use nvda with desktop because that allows extentions and addons but its a good distribution point.

Re: Whatsapp and NVDA

Well you can't unless you have whats app on the phone and can scan an inaccessible code from whats app.

You can hold the phone close to your display on first start to do that but to be honest whats app is a web program, since you need the phone to even use that, I wouldn't bother with pc myself you could try I guess.

The web version works aparently but I have yet to bother with that.

Though with the skype issue I may just forget skype for anything serious, just about everyone in the family here and oversease in asia, indonesia and china not to mention germany and holand on my family list uses it and it may be my eventual path.

Re: Where's my Chatzilla?

Which is why I use waterfox.

Right now thats 56.x right now.

And that will stay that way till june this year when its supposed to upgrade to another brouser using the same tech which means even if they are not updated anymore our old addons will work including noscript 5x.

Which is all I care about.

The advantages with waterfox is optional not forced multi cpu use, and to be honest for a blind person you don't need multi cpu.

The ilimination of all the extra addons, streamers, encoders and supposed spying tools.

You get all the languages to.

There are ofcause some disadvantages.

One of those is you don't get any advanced add shield addons, no background incrimental updates, at least not via addon, no vine codec, h265 and another codec, no drm, no encription, and maybe no html5 I am unsure, you also don't get all the extra file associations you are used to by default anyway.

And thats fine.

I have yet to find a reason I'd need it but if you do need to read something encripted chances are you may not be able to I am not sure.

The only advantage is you can use older mozilla addons, right now waterfox is still though tenuously linked to the mozilla site, stores, addons databases, etc.

With the death of esr52 in june, all those older stores will be erased aparently.

Planns are being made for waterfox to use its own infrastructure for that.

Supposedly waterfox will then upgrade to its own engine based off the opensourced firefox build in classic mode but weather I stay with waterfox after that depends on how accessible it continues to be.

It will use the old addon tech which the blind are used to which is fine.

I have not seen any issues with web pages like youtube or anything but to be honest I am not that extreme.

What I may end up doing is keeping both firefox, waterfox and chrome on my boxes the newer ones at least and just use 1 or the other as I need to depending on what happens.

This old duel core however runs waterfox better than firefox the newer will be a duel drive quad or amd 12 core, so weather that changes anything is unknown.

For me, after what ms said about accessibility services and that accessibility is the issue, if waterfox continues to work I will continue to use it.

True the older system has less security but it works, doesn't slow me down and has no issues.

And to be honest, in that respect security can take a back seat.

Firefox 57 caused me no amount of issues include some radio controls in options unclickable, the end of the nice menu bar and only buttons for addons which even nvda can not read, the fact my processer was at full power fans at full speed all day long and the frequent lockups.

Mozilla have lost me with firefox, I just hope thunderbird doesn't go the same way, else I am going to have to find something else that won't screw me over.

The only good thing is that thunderbird has not changed and I don't use addons on tb so as long as that continues to be that way then I have no issue with it.

It also seems that mozilla are upgrading stable thunderbird with security updates only which is fine.

Re: CD ripping software that works well with NVDA

I had a lot of issues in the last windows rerun with stuff like this even with it gone there were still traces.

Eventually the system screwed up and I reformatted, a reformat is the only way to get rid of all the malware.

Its why I spent 40 bucks on goldwave.

And its probably one of the only reasons I use goldwave bar restoration of audio tracks, goldwave and audacity work well for that.

I don't use those for recording though virtual recorder is better suited to my basic needs as well as my field recorder.

Yeah I know 40 bucks for a software package just to do cds but it works and has worked in the past.

As an added plus it uses free cddb which is what  old nero6 the last accessible version I used which was not legal back in the day.

It was barebones, now I use cdbxp for writing and goldwave for extracting.

Applian video capture bits of it for conversion and online conversion sites for the rest.

Its a bit adhok but it works for me at least.

There is a portable of cdex and 7zip can extract the installer however I just don't like the interface anymore.

On 30/01/2018 10:01 p.m., Gene wrote:

But for those who know how, these days, when installing free software, and given how much of it contains potentially unwanted programs, looking at the various installer fields with object navigation or the JAWS Touch cursor would be a good precaution.

Well I have tried the install and there is no way to get past the extra
software install sadly.

You can however extract the install file with 7zip and use it as a
portable version.

If you are going to use CDEX, either use an earlier version, if compatible with Windows 10, or wait to see if list members can furnish the current version without the exstra programs. Or wait for news about Unchecky or, of course, you could get sighted assistance during the installlation.

Hello,

Exact audio copy and CDex are the two most popular and accessible. I began
with CDex and liked it a lot when I still used windows for such things.
Exact audio copy is the favourite of purists and audiofiles because out of
the box it has extremely strict error checking. CDex can do this, but
needs to be set up for it and at that, it takes longer than EAC to rip with
strict settings.

Hope this helps,

Erik

Aha. Yes, I understand now. I had forgotten that some Windows 10 instalations were very restrictive. And some IT departments, I suppose, might even want to restrict program instalations this way.

Subject: [nvda] WinTenApps 18.02 released, taking a break in February and looking for volunteers to help out with this add-on #AddonRelesae

Hi all,

Windows 10 App Essentials 18.02 is now available (from the usual place via the usual update method). This release introduces a workaround for some apps that wouldn’t let NVDA announce new messages automatically, as well as improving emoji panel experience for Windows Insiders.

Important: in order to concentrate on school and other things (including putting last minute touches to Welcome to NVDA 2018 tutorial series and preparing for national speech and debate competitions in April), I’m taking a break from development of this add-on in February. During this time:

  • There won’t be a lot of development snapshot releases (worst case scenario is none during February). I’ll try my best to release one or two development snapshots if an issue that requires my attention comes up (especially if an Insider Preview breaks some functionality and urgent workaround is needed).
  • I’d like to request help from volunteers to maintain this add-on. If you’d like to submit code (especially app modules for universal aps), please send pull requests via GitHub. I’ll try my best to incorporate your work (giving credit in the process) as soon as I return from this “add-on development vacation”.

P.S. The real reason: Producing Welcome to NVDA 2018 tutorial set has burned me out, thus I’m desperate for a break. Besides, I do need to concentrate on preparing for possibly two national speech and debate competitions in April, as well as making sure I am ready to learn new things in college courses (for reference, I am a Cal State LA student and a speech and debate competitor there alongside carrying out my duties for the NVDA community); as much as NVDA community and my add-ons (and code contributions and what not) are important, I cannot forget who I truly am (a student), hence taking a break from NVDA activities for a while (I’ll discuss my current situation in a later post).

Thank you and enjoy the new WinTenApps update.

Cheers,

Joseph

Dear NVDA community,
from time to time on Windows 10 I encounter a strange cluster of symptoms
of which I can't make head nor tail, so I thought I'd ask around if anyone
else is noticing and may have an explanation for them.
It usually starts with some missing feedback. For instance, I launch a
program, and a sighted friend confirms it has indeed launched and has
gained focus, but NVDA keeps silent about it.
In that situation, if I decide to alt+tab around, usually the first tab
will announce a window title, but subsequent tabs don't. Releasing the alt
key often yields the title of the window to which I switched, but no
information about the control that gained focus in the process.
Pressing NVDA+t to find out the window title will then usually yield
"Explorer."
The tab key will indeed move focus from control to control but NVDA keeps
blissfully unaware of it.
The situation often resolves itself after some patient waiting, but may in
rare cases leave the system in an altered state until it is rebooted.
Does that ring a bell for anyone?
All the best,
Felix

It sounds like you are using the Beta or developer  version of NVDA as NVDA has not rleased a new version in about a month. If you are using software this new you should either know how to fix problems encountered, or know how to load a slightly older version without the issues you encounter. So, go to the snapshots page and load the NVDA from two or three days ago. Oh! And also report a bug in GIT.

Re: Whatsapp and NVDA

Well,
I don't know a way to do what you want, except going to the top of the "page" and pressing the down arrow 'till you're able to hear the conversation's title.
Maybe it's time to other people's opinion on this topic. I would like to know a easier way to do it, too.

Hello,
I use and I strongly recomend it.

Perhaps the bigest advantage you'll be able to notice is the typing speed.
I don't know exactly about your smartphone use, but saying about me, I really really hate to type on a touchscreen.
Now, about the app's interface...
It's so similar to a webpage, where you can navegate through the conversations using CTRL+TAB/CTRL+SHIFT+TAB.
When you do this command, you'll be on a field to type your new message on a certain people's window conversation.
Out of NVDA Focus mode, you'll see two buttons after the field I said.
It's, respectively:
Button to open and send emoticons/emojis.
Button to send your message. If the field are not filling, then this button will activate your microphone so you can record a voice message. When it's done, just press the arrow up and down again to return to the button you pressed. It will stop your recording and send your message.

Well, I guess I've said too much, so if you still are having troubles, write back and I'll do my best to help you.
Always remembering I'm a brazilian guy, so my English probably contain wrong sentences. But, believe, I tried too hard to write it for you understanding.

Cheers,
Marcio
