Re: NVDA 2021.3.2 released

Hi everyone,

Specifically, the fixed issues are:

  • Secure screen interaction: fixed two issues related to working with NVDA interface and secure screens. First, it was possible to install add-ons from secure screens if you have defined a shortcut key to open Add-ons Manager. second, you can open a web browser if you press F1 for context help from any NVDA interface control.
  • Lock screen object navigation traversal: normally NVDA is not supposed to move outside the Windows lock screen (Windows+L) via object navigation. However, it was discovered that this is not the case in recent Windows 10 releases and on Windows 11 - in fact, you could use object navigation to move to Desktop, then interact with a running program.

As Quentin stated, these will require physical access to the machine.

I also would like to take this time to recognize that some of these issues were reported, fixed, and tested by Quinn, the person who has been posting videos for everyone in recent months. These fixes and testing are Quinn's first contribution to the NVDA project.

Cheers,

Joseph

NVDA 2021.3.2 Released

By Sean Budd

NV Access is pleased to announce that version 2021.3.2 of NVDA, the free screen reader for Microsoft Windows, is now available for download. This is a security update which fixes 2 security issues present in older versions of NVDA. We encourage all users to upgrade to this version.

Security fixes

NVDA 2021.3.2 includes 2 security fixes. Please responsibly disclose potential security issues to info@.... Both issues require physical access to the computer.

  • Prevent privilege escalation from secure screens. When performing an administrative action that requires a secure screen, an NVDA user can open a command prompt with system privileges.
  • Prevent a Windows issue that allowed the use of object navigation to read content on the desktop from the lock screen. This affects Windows 10 and 11.

For further information, please contact NV Access via info@....

Important Note:

Please note, after updating any software, it is a good idea to restart the computer. Restart by going to the Shutdown dialog, selecting “restart” and pressing ENTER. Updating software can change files which are in use. This can lead to instability and strange behaviour which is resolved by rebooting. This is the first thing to try if you do notice anything odd after updating.

                Hi

I have just successfully connected via the Remote add-on to my old laptop upstairs.  I have the most up-to-date copies of the addon, NVDA  and W10 on this machine but my old laptop has Windows XP on it so NVDA and the add-on are old versions.

For a successful connection using a relay server, Connection dialog controls should be set as follows:

1st control should be set to “Client” on both computers.

2nd control must be set to either “Controlling” or Controlled”.  If both computers have the same setting, you will get silence.

Host: should be identical on both computers I.E. nvdaremote.com

Key: should be identical on both computers.

F11 toggle only works on the Controlling computer.

Cheers

Re: Following someone on TWBlue

download and install a fresh copy.

Also go to %appdata% and clear out the twblu folder and relaunch and see what that does.

I had to do this when things stopped, I assume that twblu updated and it caused its dataset to change so had to refresh.

Why it never did it itself or warned users it needed to is beyond me.

Re: Problem with Windows calculator

Hi everyone,

Update: a huge progress has been made: I thought I can come up with a more intricate solution ( hard solution) by June, but it appears it is already done - I'm testing a harder solution internally and will deploy it to development snapshot users in March (delayed due to school and to test a potential change in NVDA that will impact Windows App Essentials add-on in a fundamental way). I do plan to make this solution available to stable channel subscribers sometime this year, and plan to propose it to NV Access for inclusion by around this time next year.

The solution is not that hard from code perspective, but nevertheless hard because of testing requirements. Basically, the solution involves telling NVDA to stay silent when you enter numbers in Calculator. Because I need to test other Calculator commands, it's taking a while to test all Calculator command combinations. This solution might be tweaked in the future in case Windows and/or the app changes.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: Trying to learn Python with NVDA, request for help.

Fawaz Abdul rahman

hi,
you can press control+shift+p to bring up the command pilot.
There, you can type python to locate the run python file on the terminal.
Press enter on that, then move to the terminal by locating the second edit box in the page.
For that, press the letter e twice while in the brows mode.
From there, press the up arrow to read the output.
Good luck.

Hi Rui

I recently had to change my laptop harddrive and unfortunately I lost all the add-ons I had, I tried to recover them again from the add-ons website but not all of them are there.

Can you please send me those that you have created?

Thanks in advance

Ann (& the membership at large),

Please send this sort of question either using the "Reply to Sender" link in the original message or ask it on the Chat Subgroup.

This is not an NVDA-related topic, and the question is not appropriate to the main NVDA group.  I've been lenient about the thanks posts because I believe that there are times when "bending the rules is appropriate."  But this is not one of those times.

David, please either reply to Ann via the Reply to Sender link or, even better, post the list of your publications on the Chat Subgroup.

Since dictionary entries take up almost no room, the dictionary in the below message would be, I would think, very large.  I don't think there is any need for concern even with a dictionary consisting of hundreds or maybe over a thousand, maybe more, words.
