Re: [Nvda-devel] NVDA 2017.4rc2 now available for testing
Brice Mijares
Before shutting my system down last night I manually installed the latest version of NVDA. This morning I booted my system and heard the E-speak welcome message at the login screen and nothing after that. I have NVDA set to start after boot up but it didn't work. I went into settings and it wasn't checked to start after boot up. Is this normal for your settings to change? Thanks.

Re: can't upgrade to the nvda 2017.4 rc

Rosemary didn't know the correct name. You
may be saying the search results seem strange. Rooter is part of the name
of a large sewer cleaning company in the United States and is evidently used by
other companies as well.
The added and disabled wording implies far too much
leeway and discression on the part of those doing the work. If the tech
wants to add something he/she believes is important, it should be discussed with
the owner. Adding something and disabling it might be an option the owner
might want to keep in mind and discuss with the tech if he proposes putting a
program on the machine that runs in the background and that the user needs to
control, such as an antivirus program. But the unqualified added and
disabled wording implies that, for example, if the tech doing the work believes
that the person is using an ineffective antivirus program, he can put a
different program on as long as it's disabled without the owner's
permission. Since you are not supposed to have two antivirus programs on
the same machine, that would leave the person with no working antivirus program
and with a program whose accessibility is not known to the tech or, perhaps to
the owner as well. Adding that to the agreement implies far too much
latitude and discression on the part of the service people. It circumvents
far too much of the whole point of the stipulation to require permission.
If they don't like the antivirus program you have on the machine, does that mean
that they can remove it, place another one on the machine and disable it?
What other implications does such a stipulation confer? Anything the place
doing the work or anyone working for that place wants to upgrade or add cannot
be done without permission of the owner. I don't want any ambiguity or
wording that allows discression on the part of the tech in this respect.

I wasn't around back in the day, so, I can't speak to things you can speak to. However, trimmed down processors without enough ram is terrible. For the blind, netbooks were never a good idea. Even if coding were more efficient, music and video would take up lots of space, and not to mention other file formats.

To me these days with the overhead of a screenreader and the heavy use of graphics in software you need at least a full i3, and preferably 5 or better. 5 seems OK to me but less than 8 gig of ram tends to make it start getting jerky. In many ways, its the fault of the software, as I have said many times, what really have we gained over the years from the function point of view, just prettier pictures and more storage and hence more need to find some way to back it all up! If you have wqork done on a machine, you should
tell the place doing the work, and perhaps have a written agreement, that
nothing will be upgraded and nothing new will be placed on the machine without
asking you first. I don't know if Web Root is at all accessible.
But, from what I read, it used to be at least more or less useable by JAWS users
by extensive use of the JAWS cursor. But that was two years ago and who
knows now. Also, the system tray can be made to display the webroot icon
if it isn't now and you can do things there, but I don't know what. You
may have a way to disable protection by right clicking on the icon, looking at
whatever options come up, and trying to work with something that seems a
category where you might find such an option. I don't know whether Webroot
provides more or enough more protection than other options that may be
accessible to say whether you should keep it or not. others may be able to
comment on the question. Also, in future, make sure you get the correct
name of anything you agree to have added to the machine and write the items
down, if you need to, to remember them.

To get to it, you can try:
1. Press alt+tab. Hold down alt and keep tapping tab. You
should either find a "web rooter" window or similar, or eventually get back to
the first window you had open. Most anti-virus type programs don't have a
window open so this won't necessarily find it, but it's the easiest first
step.
2. Press WINDOWS+B to move the focus to the system tray (B for... because
:) I don't know, it's Microsoft's shortcut). Next, press right arrow
to move through the icons and see if you can find it there. If you have
"notification chevron" or "notification overflow" or similar, press up arrow,
then use left arrow to move through those icons.
When you find it in the system tray, press applications key to bring up a context menu then down arrow through that, alternatively try enter or space. Look for something like "Exit".
Failing that, press control+shift+escape to bring up task manager and down
arrow through the running programs to find it. If you press tab and find a
"more details" button. Press enter to show more details. When you
find web rooter, you can press alt+e to end task (or context menu then find end
task). Be sure you are exiting the right app as this will force close it
and it could have unintended consequences if you close the wrong thing.
The other thing you might want to do, if you don't want this web rooter, is
to open the start menu, type "add or remove programs" and see if you can find
the program to uninstall. Note it is a good idea to have an anti virus
program of some sort running. On Windows 10 I just use the built in
defender, but there are third party ones which work as well. At some point
before uninstalling it, you might check and see if you can access the main
program window or functions of this web rooter and see if you can access
it. If you can and you want to keep it, then you'll just need to figure
out how to disable it while installing programs. If it's not accessible,
it's always worth shooting an email to the program developer to ask them to make
it accessible. Even if you aren't intending to keep it, your request might
encourage them to make the program accessible for others (or for you down the
track).

firefox toolbars
Hi.
Well after trying the new noscript for ages, it appears the new firefox ui has a lot of limitations, I have no way how to access the new noscript toolbars, or in fact any of the addons as I used to. The new addon options are just not usable and firefox likes to be really slow on things like utube. If this keeps up, I am going to have to find a way either with esr or something like waterfox which uses the old but accessible engine. Sadly our accessible menus are gone. There is no way to get to the toolbars where all the addons are, and even if you can edit the addons in options no way to handle all those. With the new engine and its so called limitations all our so called accessible menus like the info bar are gone. I can't use noscript now because of this issue and have had to leave it off. If this continues I am going to have to use an outdated firefox unless I can find an user agent that works with the esr release and can configure it right.

Re: chromebook
Sally Kiebdaj
Hello guys,
I have had a chromebook for several years now and regularly use
chromevox with chrome browser on other platforms.
Mostly, I use it for google web applications but it connects to
USB storage and so I will also hook it to my portable hard drive
for working offline. Many of the native google apps do work
offline on the chromebook and then sync once you have an internet
connection again. There are also some apps specifically designed
for offline use and most chromebooks have SD card slots of varying
capacity for expanding storage.
For an idea of what is available, look at the chrome web store:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/apps As others have stated, it does not run NVDA or any other windows applications. That said, chromevox, the native screen reader, has improved greatly over the years I have had the device and in its latest iteration is quite convenient and in terms of web browsing key layout fairly similar to NVDA. I am not sure that it has audio editing software but it definitely does have a basic audio player built in for offline use. I would never have it as my primary computer but do enjoy using it for travel, reading recipes in the kitchen, or really any other time that I don't want to risk my more expensive windows or Mac machines. do be careful to get one of the chromebooks with a fast processor or the screen reader can lag too much for my patience. I regularly use two other chromebooks owned by family and the initial load time for the screen reader or responsiveness on complex websites is a bit too laggy on those machines. Mine was one of the original ones offered to the public and has held up brilliantly through OS updates. It is still faster than the two other machines I mentioned which are much newer but lower end in terms of hardware. Hope this information helps a bit and feel free to write me off-list with any more specific questions. Cheers, Sally fiddle.pup@...

As with the regular stable version, it only checks once every day. It won't necessarily have checked before you see the message on the group. If you wait, it should update automatically (do let me know if you are on rc1 and wait and it doesn't after running it a couple of times over a couple of days). Otherwise, you can download via the link in the previous message. It's the same page as usual, inviting a donation, but do select "skip donation this time" to not make a donation (I know many users make automatic or regular donations and we really appreciate that and I don't like to bother people too much!) Not really, its pretty limited as far as I can see as most storage is through the cloud.

Chromevox is also a little clunky. Not sure considering the costs if one of these has much of a place in the market these days considering what yu can do on a cheap amazon Tablet or a low end windows laptop. Brian bglists@... Is all you can use are apps on the Internet like the Chrome apps like Google Docs, Google sheets, Google Play, and so on. Is it a computer that only works with Internet apps? It sounds like you can have android apps on it, is that true? I am just trying to get my hands around what you can actually have installed on the computer itself that you can work with off line! Is there a version of a music editor, for example you could install on the computer that works with the Chrome OS? Thanks a lot. It is running GoogleOS, not Windows. It runs basically everything through the internet and the cloud services. You cannot run any programs for Windows or Apple.
