It would be good if there was an Orbit Writer list, as I'm struggling with similar questions about using it with Talkback. I seem to be in grade 1 braille and punctuation gives me numbers, for example,  A lower d gives me 4 and not a full stop/period?

Right, These are correct steps.

An alternative way would be to open github page directly. Here is the one for or browser nav:

This opens help information for add-ons in general.  I’m not sure that every add-on has help available in this way, but they generally do.

New steps begin on new lines.
Open tools in the NVDA menu.
down arrow to manage add-ons and press enter, and find the add-on in the list.
Then tab until you get to a help button and press the space bar.
I believe this usually opens the web page where you downloaded the add-on and the page usually has a description of how to use the add-on and available commands.

On quirk is that sometimes this button is called:

So you would need to either create two separate bookmarks, or use regular expression in the pattern to capture both like:
^Skip Ads?$

But once I have, if you're someone who believes that NVDA should have a settings search feature, get yourself over to GitHub and comment on that feature request.  This is one of the ways in which interest in something is gauged and priorities are set.

About which we both agree.  I think there's an existing issue on GitHub (or it may be a feature request) and that I've commented on it in the past.

But, right now, you work with the tools you've got.  And when it comes to NVDA (and JAWS, for that matter) over time I've found that far too few users, regardless of length of use, have ever been told how to open the two most commonly referenced pieces of documentation from within the screen reader itself.

In the case of NVDA, the reference material opens in your default web browser.  These days I will do nothing other than presume that a screen reader user (unless they're brand spankin' new and have made the readership aware of that) knows how to use both the screen reader search function as well as their browser's search function with a choice word or phrase to attempt to find what they're looking for.  And, truly, if they don't then they need to learn, fast.

I also expect that venues such as this one are going to have "back and forth" from those asking questions and those providing answers as needed.  If an answer is too vague, too difficult, incomplete, etc. after you've tried what was suggested then ask a follow-up indicating what's still not working.  When I started out in the various screen reader groups I was almost always giving keystroke by keystroke step-by-step instructions.  While there are times where that's necessary, they should be the exception, not the rule.

Hi Brian,

I will say this would be much easier, if NVDA had a search settings option.

I have enjoyed it both on mobile phones and in JAWS and I believe this would be a good addition to NVDA.

First, this is going to become my standard practice in 2022, so it's not aimed at you, specifically.  Every NVDA user needs to know how to bring up the NVDA User Guide when questions like this arise:  NVDA + N, H, U   [NVDA Menu, Help, User Guide]

In the User Guide, search on just the phrase "windows start" and you're right in the middle of the discussion of enabling the setting in General settings to do just that.

Now I'll give the answer:
NVDA + CTRL + G opens the NVDA General Settings.  So does NVDA + N, P, S  (Since General settings are the initial Settings tab/pane displayed)

In the General settings there is a checkbox for, Use NVDA during sign-in (requires administrator privileges).  If you have admin privilege, and check this checkbox, NVDA should become active on the Windows sign-in screen the next time you have to sign-in to windows.

Every NVDA user needs to know how to do two basic things when almost any question arises.  The one you want really depends on the exact nature of the question:

1.        Bring up the NVDA Commands Quick Reference:  NVDA + N, H, Q  [NVDA Menu, Help, Commands Quick Reference]

2.      Bring up the NVDA User Guide:  NVDA + N, H, U   [NVDA Menu, Help, User Guide]

See Section 13.5 - Add-Ons Manager in the User Guide.

Hi, I think you go to the addons that you have installed on NVDA. You just uninstall the one that is not combatable with the latest build. Someone else might be able to better tell it then I can.

Subject: [nvda] Reading Output in Programming Environments Automatically

Dear all,

I am using NVDA 2021.3.1 on Windows 10. When using the Command Prompt
or Windows Subsystem for Linux, NVDA does not auto-read the output on
pressing Enter. This means that I need to use the review cursor to
manually inspect the output each time. I do not recall experiencing
this behaviour in the past. I ran the COM registration fixing tool and
restarted with add-ons disabled without success. Is there a
work-around or patch to enable NVDA to auto-read output?

I would truly appreciate all suggestions and inputs on this.

Don't think so, this has only been going on for a day or so.

Thanks, did not help, but I do have it narrowed down to one offending
machine. The numbers will not stop until I disconnect and it happens whether
I'm controling remote or local.

?Anks s m*. Progress bars are not checked on either machine. I've figured
out that it only happens on one work machine I connect to, but once those
progress bars are being read, it continues to read them until I disconnect
remote. Progress bars are not enabled on any machines I'm using. Numbers
read so fast I have to keep hitting the control key to stop speech to see if
I'm controling local or remote machine. Not good when you're trying to keep
a radio station on the air lol!!!! Thanks again.

What exactly happens when the connection is established? Maybe delete

Orbit writer and nvda

Guy Schlosser

Hey all, first of all happy new year! I have a question. I am working with a client on using NVDA, or Jaws, with the orbit Writer. I am having trouble with both products, and wondering if anyone has the answer. How do you enter commands, such as alt plus F4, or navigate through the start menu using the orbit writer? I can get into the start menu, but cannot navigate it. Is it possible to use this device as a keyboard without a QWERTY keyboard hooked to the system? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Guy

Re: Reading Output in Programming Environments Automatically

Check to see if report dynamic content changes is on.  It is by default but it may have been turned off by a typing error.  The command to toggle it on or off is NVDA 5, 5 on the main keyboard.

Since it happens on one machine and since this seems to be an uncommon or very uncommon problem, I suspect there is a problem with the machine.  I’m not saying there is something wrong with it, but perhaps it is running something that causes the behavior;.  You may need help  that goes beyond the knowledge of the list.  My question is whether there is any support option to get help for obscure problems like this.
